This relentless whirl- wind of living is reflected in the fact that years seem like seconds and our four years here at West field State College have slid into the past like an avalanche of snow from a mountainside. It is civilized mans custom to record the events of his life for posterity and to preserve cherished memories of the past. In order to pre- serve our adventures and endeavors here at Westfield State College, we have written this yearbook, the 1963 Tekoa. It probably has little value for posterity, but we hope it has captured and enfolded warm memories of an active, per- severing and profitable four years. SAVIGNANO TO THE SENIORS You enter your chosen profession at a time when increasing de- mands and pressures are the lot of educators and education. Think- ing people the world over look to the schools to solve the multiple and explosive problems of our times. The Class of 1963 will, I am certain, measure up to these demands and by your performance will demonstrate the educational compe- tence, high standards and professional ideals which are the heritage of the State College at Westfield. We who have been privileged to assist in your professional prepa- ration wish you well and urge you to return often to Westfield, your Alma Mater. President DEDICATION By patience and endurance we sever What strength and rage could never. Jean de Lafontaine Fables In our scientific era with its emphasis on the search for truth, it is appropriate that we should have as our class advisor a man whose life has been devoted to this search. In our search for truth we began as eager and willing but unsure novices. The knowledge of his dependability and faith in us erased our uncer- tainties and led us to a gradually deepening con- fidence. He guided our experiments by which theories became reality. To all our class activities he has given the same untiring and selfless devotion that he brings to his life ' s work, science. His formula for success in all his work is one that each of us can apply in becoming competent teachers. This inspiring formula is patience + hardwork + sincerity = success. The nucleus of our class advisor ' s success is dedication. Therefore, in recognition of this out- standing characteristic, we, the Class of 1963, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. J. Kenneth Taylor. DR. EDWARD J. SCANLON PRESIDENT EMERITUS Class of 1963: In grateful recognition of your kind and thoughtful request to write a few words for your yearbook to keep alive the happy years we spent together at Westfield State College, I pen these few lines with sincere affection. To have been associated with pupils so truly representative of the ideals of Westfield State College, so appreciative of my efforts to give you a physical plant for which you can be justly proud, and to have played a part in the academic and spiritual training which should make you educational stalwarts in our great state and nation, is indeed most satisfying. But the warm personal ties of loyalty and friendship which bind us together will always be one of my most cherished memories of the class of 1963. As you leave the beloved portals of Westfield State, Remember good, remember truth, Just know that God cares for You, And you will find through youth and age, True friends to walk with you. v • ' 0 I I EDWARD J. Student Government, composed of active, in- dustrious leaders from our campus is ably con- tinuing the forward progress of our college. Although criticized as are most legislative bodies, it has successfully fulfilled its duties un- der the most capable leadership of its officers. Working this year with an increased income, this ardent group has successfully established and maintained committees for the benefit of all. Solution of the cafeteria problem, support of payment of exchange students ' transportation costs, and prevention of traffic congestion are only a small measure of its excellence. Seated: C. There was a time when a yearbook was simply a scrapbook: a collection of pictures and a few humor- ous anecdotes such as Silliest Senior. Times have changed. It is now the staff ' s obligation to provide COMPLETE and ACCURATE coverage of all facets of Westfield State College life — quite a chore. The staff of the 1963 Tekoa has attempted to do this. We hope that you are as pleased with the results as we are. D. Flint and J. Coach, Co-editors. PUBLICATIONS Put your noses to the grindstone! Westek is the official undergraduate newspaper of Westfield State College. It is published every three weeks and is distributed to the students and faculty of Westfield State College in addition to being sent to other colleges. The newspaper is strictly an extra- curricular activity and no staff member receives either financial reward or course credit for work done. Campus Note is a weekly publication which serves the purpose of keeping faculty and students informed of the events of the week. This year the Campus Note is in the capable hands of Co-Editors Dorothy Lipps and Carol Rinaldi. Sealed: P. DeForge. C. Gagin, B. Fontaine, J. Macmillan, G. Heuberger. Standing: D. Lloyd, J. All things are possible if we have faith — the drudg- erous days can brighten, the burdensome tasks can become lighter, and life in general can be filled with aesthetic qualities. The voluntary powers we possess which enable us to believe and to have faith will re- sult in the attainment of a full, rich life. This is the spiritual thought that prevails through- out Newman Club, the Catholic organization on campus. Under the guidance of Father O ' Neil, New- man Club strives to enlighten its members spiritually and morally. STUDENT FELLOWSHIP Lef t to right: B. Go(T, T. Arruda, J. MacMillan, J. Martin, L. Gottlieb, J. Hams. Student Fellowship is the Protestant religious organization on our campus. Its activities center around the spiritual growth of its members, but they also present opportunities for mental and social growth. For the first time this year the West- ern Hampden Council of Churches pro- vided a trained college worker, Miss Patricia Page, as an advisor. Under the untiring efforts of Miss Page, Dr. Lam- mers, faculty advisor and Joan Mac- Millan, president, the Student Fellow- ship has attempted to aid its members in adding meaning to their lives. I. The Westfield State College Glee Club opened the 1962-63 season with a concert in the Springfield Municipal Auditorium at the annual meeting of the Hampden County Teach- ers ' Association. Karen Behn, Miss Massachu- setts, announced the program. The annual Christmas Concert was held in Dever Auditorium before the Christmas Ban- quet. The Glee Club sang traditional Christ- mas Carols and the cheerleaders performed a dramatized drill. Under the direction of Miss Catherine Dower the Glee Club successfully presented the Broadway musical, Best Foot Forward, in April. The scene was set at Winsocki Col- lege where a formal dance took place. Comedy arises when, a movie star, Gale Joy. was invited by one of the male students to at- tend the dance. She accepted the invitation. Meanwhile he wrote to his girl telling her he had the flu and expected to be ill for some time. His girl, feeling sorry for him arrives on the scene. Humor resulted from this chaotic situa- tion. The Glee Club went to Worcester State Col- lege and presented a combined concert with the other State College Glee Clubs. Worcester State College Glee Club returned the visit to Westfield in May to participate in a combined concert with our own Glee Club. FOOTLIGHTERS Left to right: K. Ward. N. Nelson. G. Cove, M. DORM DANCE Autumn Nocturne , sponsored by the girls of Scanlon Hall was held on the evening of October 20th. Pat Praisner, a member of the Junior Class, served as chairman. Dancing was to the music of Al Santos ' band. The decorations of pumpkins, cornstalks, and colored leaves along with orange and rust streamers were very appropriate for this first dance of the 1962 fall season. Is that so? A million miles away. We could have danced all night. 48 HALLOWEEN HOP Ghosts and Goblins gathered in the cafeteria on October 27th, all invited by our Sophomore Class, to monster mash, the latest dance craze. Decorations of weird looking monsters, hovering black bats, and eerie shriveled cornstalks set the scene for the appearance of a cackling decrepit figure in the guise of a witch. The courageous couples didn ' t flinch at the unnerving sight of a human heart , eyeball and other such witches ' souvenirs. Love potion? Come dance with me. 49 JUNIOR PRODUCTION PWA On November 8th and 9th in Dever Auditorium 115 members of the Junior Class, under the capa- ble student directorship of Betsy Papp, presented an original production. It was suggested by the Junior Class Advisor, Professor Vito Sammartano, that the Class of 1964 stage an entire production. This was all the incentive needed. Upward Ho! a musical comedy with the setting of a space race in western background was the grand finale of several months of hard work. 50 QUINTET QUEEN DANCE Crowning the Queen. The Quintet Queen Dance signifies the official open- ing of basketball season at Westfield State. At this dance, sponsored by the Men ' s Athletic Association, a queen is chosen to reign during the basketball season. Lovely Linda Dooley, freshman class candidate, reigned as Quintet Queen for the ' 63 basketball sea- son. Members of her majesty ' s court were Patricia Goggin, junior candidate, and Joyce Harrison, soph- omore candidate. Queen and her court: P. Goggin, Queen L. Dooley, J. Harrison. ■Ha 1 i ■■i That was the funniest one we ' ve heard in ages! Congratulations, Nancy! CHRISTMAS BALL The Currier and Ives Room of the Hotel North- ampton was the scene of the annual Christmas Ball, sponsored by the Junior Class. The theme of the din- ner dance was Candle Glow and Mistletoe. Dancing was to the rhythm of Ray Taylor ' s orchestra. The Deserted. 52 The Deserters? ? ? ? ? WINTER CARNIVAL M Jk Ml MP M IP ? Winter Carnival Committee. Winter Carnival, sponsored by the seniors and sophomores, was ushered in with a highly entertaining jazz concert featuring the music of Glenn Miller under the direction of Ray Mc- kinley. Joan Shepard was the featured vocalist and enlivened the show by doing a twist. Dave Noonan, our skilled radio announcer, had the pleasure of introducing Ray McKinley and the Glenn Miller orchestra. He also pre- viewed the coming attractions of the weekend. Friday evening enhanced the lighthearted at- mosphere with a movie comedy, Toy Tiger, starring Jeff Chandler, Lorraine Day, and Tim Hovey. Much credit should be given to Nancy Motta and Dave Noonan for the excellent job they did as co-chairmen of both Thursday ' s and Friday ' s programs. Say Cheese!! Ray McKinley ' s Glenn Miller Orchestra. __ King David and Queen Anne. Anne Kamont and Craig Webster were responsible for planning Saturday ' s activities which opened in the afternoon with athletic contests in the gymnasium. The feature attraction was the student-faculty volleyball game which the spectators as well as participants enjoyed tremendously! A class com- petition and square dance filled the afternoon with enjoyable memories. The caller for the square dancing was the well- known Gloria Rios. That same evening the traditional semi-formal ball was held at the Shaker Farms Country Club with dancing to the music of Bill Orr ' s orchestra. There was a large student and faculty attendance despite the inclement weather. Climaxing the evening was the crowning of the Winter Carnival King and Queen, David Clune and Anne Tangredi. Time passed quickly and all too soon a wonderful evening came to an end. Everyone departed with promises to meet on the ski slopes Sunday. Oof!!! Up again?? What happened to Peter and Paul? Warming up! Now what, George? Through the well-organized efforts of co- chairmen, Judy Walters and Hank Wilgus, the charm and merriment of the weekend reached its closing chapter on Sunday. The day was spent at Happyland in Becket, Due to unfortu- nate weather conditions, skating and snow sculpturing had to be cancelled. Some coura- geous adventurers challenged the slopes on skiis and toboggans. Landing in the brook didn ' t seem to dampen the spirits of those who ca- reened down the hills on toboggans. The effects of our unpredictable New Eng- land weather were compensated for by other activities. While their braver companions tested their skills on the icy slopes, the rest of the group found indoor diversions, specifically food, a glowing fire, and the delightful folk songs of Teryl Deegan. The winter revellers re- tired to the Bonnie Rig Inn where food and dancing were enjoyed by everyone. So Winter Carnival 1963 came to an end, but to take its place are the warm memories of a wonderful weekend. Heading for the lodge? There ' s warm drinks waiting for you . . . Why don ' t you get out there and do!! 55 Two man carry!!! ■■MAY DAY The theme for the thirty-first annual May Day Festival was Dances of the Twenties and Thir- ties. This traditional procession was held on May 16, 1962, on the campus grounds. The colorful dances given by the various classes were in honor of our queen, Beverly Vaccarello, and her two maids of honor, Nancy Green Hutch- inson and Anne Kamont. Highlighting the festivities was the crowning of the queen, after which such dances as the Lindy, the Continental, and the Charleston were per- formed. 57 STUDENT GOVERNMENT BALL CLASS DAY What ' s on your mind, Dick? Sober Seniors — at last! The Student Government Ball, one of the last social functions of the year, was held at the Mountain Park Ballroom in Holyoke. Sponsored by Student Govern- ment, this dance is the highlight of Senior Week. Class Day is a traditional exercise at Westfield State College. It is the culmi- nation of the academic year when each class assumes its new status in the college. The pause that refreshes. (?!!?) Our last appearance as Juniors. 58 wsc ■V J. Moynahan ID yUd=n C. Lacking in height, State made up for it with hustle and a spirit that soon won the admiration and support of the fans. With many experienced newcomers, the Westfield Owls will be a team to be reckoned with in the future. Now get out there and win! You got it, Zook! BASEBALL Almost everyone will agree that the baseball team of last year was the best ever seen at State. The outlook for 1963 is even better. With a majority of the starting players being experienced un- derclassmen, Coach Flynn has a good nucleus for the future. Boasting good pitching, solid hitting and adequate fielding, WSC has a good opportunity to take the Conference Crown. R. Marsh First Row: Coach Flynn. J. Moynahan, J. Kijak, R. Marsh, R. Arra, R. THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL The sleek and the combed and the carefully pressed The down cast, neglected and carefully dressed, Timid or eager they come to my door. It ' s first day of school a new world lies before. And what are the wares that I should display On this strangely alluring, yet fearsome first day? Toys and pictures, small flock to beguile. And for the rough places a quick ready smile The same type of wares I should stock through the year, Sincerity, sympathy, wisdom and cheer; All the spiritual wares of kindness and truth, And a heart that remembers the footings of youth. For here will they live, may they learn to share, To be honest and truthful and friendly and fair. Solemn the thought, the task that I hold, Casting life patterns and setting the mold. Will the days they spend here dull the light of their faces, Or make them aware of the stars and the spaces? The import of first day is as wide as the sea. May they find a true guide in the teacher I ' ll be. Author unknown FUNNY FRESHMEN To think of time — of all that retrospection, To think of today, and the ages continued henceforward . . .
