(Eljarge to i t ffllass of 1950 These are days of teacher shortage in our Elementary schools. These are days of national unrest in many essential industries. These are days of international unrest and tensions. These are, therefore, days when you who are about to enter the profession of teaching must be prepared not only to train children in those fundamentals of learning which will aid them in earning a living, but in the ideals and practices which make democratic promises work and which distinguishes such ideals and practice from those of totalitarian re- gimes. Your biggest job will be to keep from becoming so concerned in preparing children to earn a living that you fail to teach them how to live in a democratic society. I therefore urge you to keep alive in yourself and those who shall be entrusted to your care those principles of government eco- nomics, morality and religion which have made our country great and on which we must depend for its future progress.
