(Eljarge to % Class of 1949 The Class of 1949 goes forth into a world divided into two widely divergent schools of thought as to the proper means to bring about peace in the world. The one recognizes that the state must serve man. It recognizes that all his rights are derived from God; that it is the duty of the state to do nothing which will interfere with them, but everything which will preserve them. The other recognizes that man is a creature of the state, that all rights come from the state and that he must forever be a slave to those who dictate its policies. The one is founded on a spiritual concept of man, the other on a materialistic concept. Your country is in the first category and you have been trained to teach the youth of today that the principles on which this country was founded and under which it has prospered are those under which it alone can be preserved. Your duty, therefore, is clear. You must not only teach children the skills which will enable them to establish their economic well-being within the limitations of their abilities, but also how to preserve and further advance those moral and spiritual values which are basic to western civilization. May you do your duty to God, man, and your country according to the best traditions of your college.
