TOBEY PRESIDENT OF THE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE AT WESTFIELD (Eljarge to % Class of 1949 The Class of 1949 goes forth into a world divided into two widely divergent schools of thought as to the proper means to bring about peace in the world. The one recognizes that the state must serve man. It recognizes that all his rights are derived from God; that it is the duty of the state to do nothing which will interfere with them, but everything which will preserve them. The other recognizes that man is a creature of the state, that all rights come from the state and that he must forever be a slave to those who dictate its policies. The one is founded on a spiritual concept of man, the other on a materialistic concept. Your country is in the first category and you have been trained to teach the youth of today that the principles on which this country was founded and under which it has prospered are those under which it alone can be preserved. Your duty, therefore, is clear. You must not only teach children the skills which will enable them to establish their economic well-being within the limitations of their abilities, but also how to preserve and further advance those moral and spiritual values which are basic to western civilization. May you do your duty to God, man, and your country according to the best traditions of your college. Erna M. Bavless, B.S. 117 Hampden Street West Springfield, Mass. In witness whereof we hereto set our hand and seal and in the presence of three witnesses declare this to be our last will and testament on the fifth day of June A. D., 1949. CLASS OF 1949 Margaret Sullivan, Secretary. On this fifth day of June A.D., 1949, the class of 1949 of Westfield State Teachers College, Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, signed the foregoing instrument in our presence declaring it to be their last will and testament, and as witnesses thereof we three do now at their request, in their presence and in the presence of each other, hereto subscribe our names. Richard Elliott ' 50 Maureen Toomey ' 51 Carl Tripp ' 52 (EI 0S propose April 15, 1958. Dear Peggy: I have counted the days since I started to contact our classmates for the triennial till I could write you and tell you all the news. First I was in touch with Jeanne Adshead, and she is married to the president of a large golf ball manufacturing company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jeanne tells me she talked to Gwen Clifford recently and she has given up teaching and is selling the very latest in textbooks for school teachers. Gwen finds this much more interesting than teaching. Our little Midgie is treasurer and organizer for the National P.T. A. The membership in the P. T. A. all over the United States has increased by leaps and bounds since Midge has been making personal appearances at the meetings. Remember, she was always good at taking care of the cash . Barbara Hickson is happily married and has three darling daughters. She has settled in Westfield so her daughters may attend W. S. T. C. some day. The most exciting news I received while trying to get in touch with our classmates is that Peg MacKenzie and Anita Ollari are now Mrs. Liggett and Mrs. Meyers, respectively. Just think, they are the wives of two tobacco millionaires. Do you think we can interest them in a mere triennial . One of our girls I did not have to search very far for is Jean Olsen, librarian at our Alma Mater. She is anticipating a big day at the triennial hashing over old times . The biggest theatre news of the day is the smash hit, Phelan and Sullivan , in a vaudeville skit that is out of this world . Remember them in Teachers Are People ? They were the hit of the show. Blonde, blue-eyed Elaine Wing has gone into business. She owns a chain of stores known as Wing ' s 5 f to $5.00 Dept. Stores . I understand she is in the six-number bracket โ€” what an income tax she has to pay! Ann Robinson has been working as a model for a New York photographic studio. Her pay checks are something to see. Joe is still waiting for her to say Yes . Straight Thinking is the latest of Tom Hogan ' s books for school teachers. This is just a sideline for Tom, as he is director of training in the Colton State Teachers Training School. The Co-Ed in Amherst is the name of a large, modern drug store owned and operated by Peggy Sullivan. Peggy has a rule that all her employees must be working to earn their way through college. This, of course, is good business as it brings all the college crowd to her store. Her own experience at Crotty ' s gave her this idea for making money easily. As for myself, Peggy, you know I am still teaching, but have as a very profitable sideline O ' Brien ' s School of the Irish Dance . I teach all the Irish dances and have more pupils than I can take care of, so I have to have an assistant. With such a profitable business, I expect to take a tour of Europe next summer. Well, Peggy, I hope you have had good luck in tracing the other members of our class, and that I will be hearing from you soon. As ever, Alice. CLASS PROPHECY (Continued) April 21, 1958. Dear Alice: I was thrilled to receive your newsy letter and to hear that you were able to get word to so many of our classmates about Triennial . I was in Boston recently, and who should I run into in Jordan Marsh Company, but Pat Carroll. She was demonstrating the best coffee in the world and had a very attentive group about her. She will be among those present at W.S. T.C. Triennial. Virginia Salaba has said Yes to Fran. He has finished his college career and is estab- lished . They are to make their home in Washington, D. C. I hope we all get an invitation to the wedding. Dot Liptak has been made principal of the Elm Street School in Agawam. She has proved herself very capable and is well liked by pupils, teachers and parents. Good luck to her. Ann McCluskey has one of the finest nursery schools in New England. It is known as The Cradle . She has as her pupils, children of the well-known 400 in Boston. Pat Redden has taken a year ' s leave of absence and is specializing at Columbia. The course is known as Teachers โ€” Be Glamorous . She will travel and lecture as soon as she completes the course. Last, but by no means least, is myself. As you know, Alice, Ronnie and I are happily married. Ronnie has a large plumbing business. We spend our summers at our summer home at Black Point Beach, and the severe winter months at St. Augustine, Florida. However, you may expect me at Triennial . I am looking forward to a wonderful day with all my classmates. If there is anything I can do to help, be sure to call on me.
