H Ilfl'07'lb'6l! Cyketfh The State Normal School in Westiield was originally located at Barre, where on September 4, 1839 it opened its doors to the youth of Massachusetts. The Westfield School is the second oldest teacherftraining institution in the United States. Professor Samuel P. Newman, for several years acting-President of Bowdoin College, served as its first principal. Mr. Newman's illness and subsequent death caused the school to be closed from November, 1841 to September, 1844. When the classes were resumed, Westfield became the new location for the school because of its central position among the western counties. The students Hrst assembled in the NVestfield Academy of which Rev. Emerson Davis was principal. He assumed the additional duties of head of the NVestfield State Normal School. On September 3, 1846 the first Normal School building was erected on the site now occupied by the Training School. Through the generosity of a friend of educa- tion, a State appropriation, and the contributions of the private citizens and of the town of Westfield, the money for the construction was obtained. The school was enlarged by the addition of two wings in 18605 in 1869 it was remodeled by the building of a second story. The present college building, designed by H. H. Richardson, and dedicated june 21, 1892, was opened in 1894. The Normal Training School, replacing the Model Schools, was instituted in the fall of 1900. Dickinson Hall, the new dormitory, became available to women students early in 1903. The school was converted into a State Teachers College in 1932. The curriculum has been expanded to include a fourfyear academic and professional course for the successful completion of which a degree of Bachelor of Science in Education is granted. 8
