The 1983 Varsity Boys' Soccer Team had another extremely successful season with a record of 14-2-4, a record 4th appearance in the Union County finals, and a heart breaking shootout loss to Columbia in the sectional finals. Captain Steve Shields, voted to first team All State by the coaches' poll, named to the first Mid-Atlantic team and voted first team Union County and first team Group IV All State by the Star Ledger, was the captain and leader throughout the season. Junior goalie Dave Zupko and senior Declan Cunningham were also given county and state recognition. In addition, John lerardi, Ed Haag, and Taylor Wright gained county recognition. The team will lose three seniors: Jim Dodd, Steve Shields, and Declan Cunningham; however, a host of experienced sophomores and juniors are returning to make up a potentially very strong team for next year. The J.V. team rolled to an 11-1 record and the sophomore team was equally successful at 5-0. The 1983 Varsity Football team had a disappointing season with a record of 0-8-1. Limited enrollment and a lack of experience hurt the Westfield squad. New head coach Dick Zimmer faced the difficult position and had to deal with many mounting injuries during the season. Seniors Kenny Miller and Dan Gilday led the team as co-captains of the squad. Many thanks to Robert Brewster, Ron Barner, Larry Dubiel, Wm. Mellott, and Steve Bodmer for their time and efforts. The J.V. team compiled a record of 3-4 and the sophomore team posted a record of 0-3. With sophomore and junior experience returning next year, the hopes for a brighter season look good.
