BRESSON ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Major Bresson, in his second year as athletic director has pushed forward with great strides toward setting up games to show the true Raider spirit. Continued success in the field of athletics is insured with Major Bresson heading the athletic department. CAPTAIN FRANK E. CRUMPACKER HEAD COACH Captain Crumpacker, has finished three years as a coach, and has recorded wins by the great numbers in the fields of football, basketball and track. Captain Crumpacker has improved the athletic record greatly. In the years prior to Captain Crum- packer’s arrival, the varsity football team recorded one win in fifteen games, but since he has been here, the record has been sixteen wins, three ties, in twenty five games. Western ' s first tally came when Bud Gouin climaxed a 90 yard drive, going over from the 6 yard line. WMA - 20 MISSOURI MILITARY ACADEMY - 0 Victory number two was not a great problem. Bud Gouin scored twice on runs of 32 and 10 yards, and Dick Studebaker scored on a 4 yard plunge. WMA -32 PARKWAY -0 The Big Red ran at will from any position on the field in a game which saw the bench play the entire second half and a good portion of the 2nd quarter. Schreep scored twice and Gouin, Karch, and Studebaker each tallied one TD apiece. WMA -14 JOHN BURROUGHS -22 The air was filled with passes as Western met her defeat of the season in a game destined to determine the ABC. championship. In this game, Schreep crossed the goal line twice for Western. WMA -26 PRINCIPIA - 6 The Raiders bounced back from their first loss by gain- ing the fourth win of the season. Bud Gouin had a field day rushing for 236 yards, and making two touchdowns, one of which was a 77 yard run. Schreep added the other two scores. WMA - 13 COUNTRY DAY - 13 Western footballers had a poor day as Codasco escaped with a 13-1.3 tie. Schreep scored twice; one being the longest run from scrimmage during the season on a quarter- back-keep which went 92 yards. The game ended with Western knocking on TD door, having only yards to go. WMA - 34 LUTHERAN SOUTH - 6 The Raiders rolled to another lop-sided victory in a game which saw Beir, Schreep, and Ryan score one TD each, while it remained for Gouin to score twice. WMA - 19 LIITHERAN CENTRAL- 13 This.. game was, without a doubt, the most thrilling of the season. A great pass play by Ranney and a 3 yd. plunge by Gouin gave the raiders a 12-0 lead at the half. The Crusaders overcame this lead in the 2nd half with a tre- mendous passing attack that enabled them to take a 13-12 lead in the final minutes of play. Western took the kick-off and moved the ball to the Lutheran 4 yard line, only to loose the ball with about 30 seconds of playing time remaining. However, Mac Fall ' s jarring tackle caused the Lutheran ball carrier to fumble and McCandless alertly recovered the ball. Then Gouin blasted over from the five, carrying half the Lutheran team with him. Two seconds later the clock ran out. WMA - 7 CAHOKIA - 0 In the final game of the season, the Crimson Eleven met a determined Commanche team who were out to avenge last year s humiliating 49 - 0 defeat. But WMA’s defense was superb and the offense was potent enough to let Schreep score the necessary tally. SUMMARY The I960 team was represented by a fine team which held the best won and lost record in the Alton area. The standouts were numerous. In the line, Harold Bemis, I odd Brown, Gene Edele, Doyle Engle, Tom Hutchings, Chuck Mac Fall, Bucky Port- wtxxi, George Ranney, and Drew Schoepp were all tough senior competitors. Jerry Edele, Bud Gouin, Steve Schreep, and Dick Studebaker proved to be the hard running senior backs. Juniors to look for next year will be Art Beir, Bill Elliott, and Dick McCandless. In the years to come, the members of the football team of I960 wi ll cherish the memory of their football team, one of Western’s greatest. B” FOOTBALL TEAM Slotkowski, Kempka. D. MIT VALSKY VARSITY BASKETBALL ’60-’6l The Corps of Cadets is proud of its 1 960 - 6 1 varsity basketball team and its accomplishments. Although the over-all record was somewhat unimpressive 9 - 9, the league play was sparkling. Lutheran Central, last year’s champions, again put together a potent attack to emerge with the victory laurels this year. After Christmas, the ABC League schedule swung into action. Each ABC team played the others twice. Western captured two games from Principia, Lutheran South, and Country Day. They split with John Burroughs, and lost to Lutheran Central. The outlook at the end of fall last year was not bright. There were no veteran lettermen and only two who saw action last year returned to the court. These boys, Do§ Martin and Larry Howard, coupled with Drew Schoepp, Frank Mitvalsky, Dale Saville, and Steve Schreep, modeled a formidable team, that scored 991 points, while allowing 6 points The Red Raiders did exceptionally well con- sidering the handicap which was placed on them. The season opened on a favorable note whin the Big Red five crushed Venice High School. Hot ever, the next game against Marquette brought a loss. Prior to Christmas Furlough, the cagers entered the Jennings tournament. In the first game. Western slipped by Jennings to advance into the finals. Being pitted against Ladue proved to be too much for the court men, and the Raiders wound up with a 2nd place trophy. The over-all Western League record was 7-3 was good enough to tie with John Burroughs for second place. w hich The high point man for the year was Dale Saville with 297 points. Saville was the Top Scorer in nearly every contest. However, he had a splendid supporting cast with Larry Howard ' s lay-ups, Frank Mitvalsky ' s unorthodox jump shots , Steve Schrecp s hook shots. Drew Schoepp’s twenty- footers, and Don Martin’s tip-ins. The entire first five, and number six man, are seniors completing their final year of play. George Fields, a junior, and Lee McGrady, a sophomore, will be watched for next year ' s season. We salute a fine team which made its own breaks through hard work. Is drill that much funr 1 99 THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR Fayma Green is more than a title on West- ern’s roster; she is a sparkling personality which touches the daily experiences of every cadet. As dietitian she serves the food that satisfies; as social director, she directs the program that creates happi- ness. Her specialties; good food, birthday cakes, blind dates, dancing classes, formal and informal dances .... all the extras that cadets never forget. Mrs. Green came to Western with her husband Major W. H. Green, in 1943. Her sons, William, and John, attended and graduated from Western. Early in her Western career, she proved her versa- tility; she filled in as a teacher, assisted with the lower school, eventually became dietitian and social director. In every capacity her rich personality, her maternal interest, her professional training has given life at Western an extra touch that has made life richer and more pleasant. Shanahan soft-shoeing” In this garb, Ellison even catches the eye of the M. C., Ingersol. Bones (Horton) and Tambo (Lehman) provide the laughs throughout the night with Ingersol acting as the middleman. Chorus girls are hard to find on the Western campus, but these six charac- ters had to do. Ingersol handled the position of M. C. very adroitly. CHRISTMAS TIME THROUGH THE WEEK TUESDAY Saville finally got his letter from home. CADET LIFE WEDNESDAY Several cadets pay a visit to the nurse — during office hours. Majors Lange and Malone sell goods to cadets in the Q.M. THURSDAY Gouin and Schreep pocket another allowance. Major Green prevents stuffing the ballot box. Mrs. Thomas waits on hungry cadets. 115 A BARRACKS LIFE FRIDAY Karch takes care of another disciplinary problem. SATURDAY SUNDAY Glendenning thoroughly checks Mule ' s rifle. Studebaker and Col. Moore discuss the inspection. Cadets get back to the books after a relaxing weekend. But 1 need the coat today! MRS. W. P. PORTWOOD Fort Worth Texas New contributions to better living, better defense, better industrial efficiency from On the eve of its 50th anniversary, Magnavox reports some of its major recent achievements. Consumer Products— For well over two generations, Magnavox has led in innovation. Today the Consumer Products Division is on the market with a vast array of products, giving Magnavox the biggest competitive lead in its history. Here are just a few recent examples of Magnavox achievements in home entertainment. IN BIG PICTURE TELEVISION, Magnavox has been the leader for several years . . . last year sold more than one-third of all the 24 sets sold. And Magna- vox is now introducing new 27 models which further widen the gap. With 400 square inches of picture, these sets have about 130 square inches more than widely publicized new 23 sets yet take no more wall space. RECORDS NOW LAST A LIFETIME with the revolutionary new Magnavox Imperial Automatic Record Player. It handles records more gently than human hands . . . plays them virtually without wear by a “feathertouch” tone arm which exerts only 1 10-oz. pres- sure on the record. It is jam-proof, fool-proof and plays records without distortion . . . adding to the leadership of Magnavox in stereophonic high fidelity. the stereo theatre, a Magnavox development introduced in 1959, has opened a whole new market. It combines stereophonic high fidelity, TV, FM AM radio and phonograph in a single console. Magnavox dominated this market last year, and although imitated by nearly all major competitors, still leads with about 50% of all sales in the first 6 months of 1960. There is now a complete line of Magnavox Stereo Theatres, from $339.90 to $795.00. ‘Diagonal measure in the international field, Magnavox International Electronics, Ltd., was organized last spring, headquartering in London. This subsidiary will bring Magnavox creative engineering to the European scene and market Magnavox brand products in England and the U. K., and eventually in other world markets. Government and Industry — In the complex field of sophisticated electronics, Magnavox serves the national defense both as the supplier of specialized components and as the developer of entire systems. Because our military leaders look to Magnavox for solutions to complex problems, the present backlog of business is consistently heavy in these areas. i ANTI SUBMARINE WARFARE SYSTEMS AIRBORNE NAVIGATIONAL RADAR SYSTEMS MISSILE AND SATELLITE COMPONENTS • AIRBORNE MISSILE FIRING EQUIPMENT • AIRBORNE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS • NAVAL VESSEL COMMUNICATION SYS- TEMS • GROUND COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT • DIGITAL AND ANALOG COMPUTERS FOR MILITARY CONTROL SYSTEMS. Because of Magnavox creativity and ingenuity, it is engaged in many other projects which for classified reasons may not be revealed. The continued investment program by Magnavox in new research facilities and equipment assures that the Company is uniquely equipped to pioneer, invent and develop new applications in electronics, electro-acoustics, electro-chemicals, electro-physics and electro-mechanics.
