Mr. RayburnW. quwcxllctderdiscusses school questions with the officers of the Student Council: tack Gannon, Mary Wheeler. Kenneth Bassett, and Betty Dieckmcmn. To the right is the Assistant Principal, Mr. Arthur Havlovic, and the counselor 0t tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade girls, Mrs, Dorothy Heninger, 01414156 0V5. Our torefothers have handed down to us through generations the tradition of liberty. We have always believed in it and cherished it. We have fought great wars to preserve it. Because of it we have enjoyed health, wealth, and hap- piness. These in turn have placed upon us the honor and grave responsibility of world leadership. Why Should we not believe in tiberty today and guard tt jealously OS our most precious posses sion? A. J. Havolvic '; Counselors encourage students to plan their lives cmd fake places in 0 world where personal choices are our right and privilege. To know how to make these choices intelligently we learn to consider our interests, abilities, and aptitudes and the needs of the com- munity so that we can best serve our- selves, our tctmities, and our country. In so doing students will be better equipped to preserve the liberty which is our heritage. Mrs. Dorothy Hentnger Everybody believes in liberty; liberty means freedom from bondage. A free man is master of himself. How tar can we go toward mastery of our self? How much responsibility do we desire? Many need and wish some gut dance, control, and support. We may even enjoy enstovement to loved ones, church, profession, or cause. Liberty begins with us. As we team more and more to master our own lives, we will discover that we have fewer and fewer bondages. We can have as much tib- erty as we desire, B. W. Cctdwcrllader Here at Western Hills we students be, lieve in liberty too. With careful thought, we elect our homeroom representatives to Student Councilt As good citizens we accept and enforce the decisions ot our Student Council. We realize the need for the voice of authority and recognize the fact that the decisions of the administrai tion are made for the common good of alt. Only when we can be good citizens of our school can we become worthy citizens of the United States. With this important thought in mind, we constant- ty strive to make democracy live at Western Hills. The Student Body 25 eaclwm gaggle in 012 QVty :00. 7A8? In our faculty section we have tried to carry forth our theme and show the good will be tween the members of the faculty and the stu- dent body. Our teachers have been taken in informal groups without heed of departments. Whenever possible they have been taken with their good friends who are memberq of the faculty. Seniors whose pictures did not appear: Weiset When we seniors entered the seventh grade at Western Hills in 1943, we didn't think much about what dear old West Hi would mean to us in the future. We trudged from class to class and stared wonderingly at the big seniors. As we passed from grade to grade, we were gradually molded by our teachers, fellow students, and adminis- tration heads into genuine high school kids. When we reached the ninth grade, we thought, Oh boy, now we're climbing fast toward the top. The fellows and girls courses in the curriculum. In our sophomore year we started on the road to becoming big wheels. Everything was working out just right. During our junior year we felt the glory and responsibility all around us of becoming next year's seniors. Now we are the seniors, the leaders of the school. We don't feel so awfully big. We feel the challenge of next year looming ahead of 1151 pleasant to some and not so pleasant to others. We all know the need of facing that challenge; cmd when we have faced it and met it, then will we take our places CIS worthy Citizens of tomorrow. With the physical shape and mental attitude of the team at its peak we proceeded to trounce strong up-state Lima Central, Aurora and Covington Holmes. After four victories in a row the Maroons then dropped their first city game to the strong Purcell Cavaliers. The accomplishment that followed was perhaps even greater than the victories the team tasted throughout the season. It was great to know we had a team who could come back after a stinging defeat and Win four in a row again. The gridiron feats of the team in those four games were the highlights of the season. Central Vocational was easy, the game of the year was played against Withrow, Hughes was soundly beaten, and Walnut Hills gave way to a superior backfield. The P.H.S.L. crown was ours. One of the shows that was publicly acclaimed as being one of the most outstanding ever performed by a high school band was the Three Ring Circus . The band first saluted the school. Then it went into a block for- mation While a small clown band entered from the sidelines. Next fol- lowed these formations: three rings with circus acts going on in each, a merry-qo-round that broke down, a tiger with a wagging tail, a calliope with smoke, and finally a parade down the field to the strains of I Love A Parade . The drum majors and maiorettes are: SEATED: M. Powell, M. Otto, C. Tiffany. STANDING: R. Reik, I. Winkler, I. Forney. Another outstanding performance by the band was the United Nations show. In this the band saluted the Big Four . This demonstration included a huge shield with red stripes and blue shakers representing the United States. The show ended with a salute to United Nations by forming a large UN. to the strains of, Your Land and My Land . After football season the band settles down to working on concert music. During this time the band performs for civic affairs, school programs, and in various contests. This year's schedule i will include works such as Caesar t Frank's Symphony in D Minor, Con- certo in Jazz, Bach's Prelude and Fugue in B Flat Minor and many others. 91 .. ..-..MM., .55 92 First How: I. We have tried our best to present its message but it really cannot be done Without the glorious music. Whenever we most desired an idea, we have played the records for inspiration. If our theme has gone across, you will buy these records and play them for yourselves; you Will listen to your school choirs sing the magnificent score. We recommend Ballad for Americans. The Western Hills Annual Staff of '49 l85 The interpretive photography on the following pages, the opening section, and throughout the rest of the book is the work of Russell R. Benson. We devote this page to the acknowl- edgment of our debt to him and our grateful appreciation. With- out him what we have tried to do in this book would have been impossible. We have attempted to go a little beyond most an- nuals in picturing not only day by day life in a modern high school but also one phase of the great ideals which motivate that life and are its reason for being. We believe that by so doing we can accomplish a serious educational purpose in a manner which is possible through no other medium. When students and their parents see the great ideal of brotherhood and a better world so beautifully expressed in Ballad for Americans. portrayed through pictures of themselves and their daily activities, we hope it will enter into their souls as never before. Only thus can America rise to her great destiny which her present position of leadership in the world has thrust upon her. Because we believe this so firmly we have had joy in working so hard on this book. But would have been helpless without Uncle Russell . How can we illustrate the message of the Ballad in our closing section? Where can we find the material for the abstracts on page 7? The only way we can get that idea across is with a montage. Will you make us one? Uncle Russell would wrack that creative brain of his tor a while, come up with an idea, and then execute it for us in photography. Somehow in spite of confused schedules, howling mobs of students, plates that didn't fit, seemingly insoluble problems, our book is finally finished almost exactly as we wanted it. That this has been ac- complished is due in no small part to Russell R. Benson. The Western Hills Annual Staff of '49 says an inadequate Thank rr you. N, .1. .- 21 4 '1, Ut$ . , a.
