SLQHQ - 6 DEDIBATIU At this time, when the world is coming to realize more than ever the importance of education as the backbone of all civilization, we pause to pay tribute to a man who has devoted his life to its progress-our beloved principal, Mr. Benjamin H. Siehl. On May 29, 1928, a record crowd gathered for the dedication of the new high school. The first clod of earth was turned over by the man who was soon to successfully lead the school through the trying days experienced by all new institutions. The infant school made great progress that first year. The senior class, which consisted of only twenty-three pupils, chose the school slogan: cooperation, the school motto: Lux et Veritaspand the school colors: maroon and cream. Mr. Siehl guided Western Hills through infancy and adolescence. Under his capable leadership, it grew and matured to take its place among the five highest accredited high schools in Ohio. The termination of this school year will mark the close of Mr. Siehl's career which has been devoted, for over half a century, to the cultural and educational enrichment of young American lives. It is with heart-felt regret that we see him leave Western Hills, we are grateful for the magnificent heritage he leaves behind him. The school he fostered will continue for many years to serve the people, a fitting and inspiring monument to his life of service. 7 mm emncQQmic3fm QaQ c9f3 tha ww? tiff Qaclqiswafwmwi ,vm A ff Q. f..w,w.f i f ' ,QWFW WL' 'vi-H' C A-fu, 1 J '34 2 J N . They share ideas and develop plans together so that we, the students, may have the best educational opportunities that are available. They admire and respect each other as good educators, but the leisurely moments they spend together have been the most enjoyable. The group above typifies their relationship. At lunch time, bits of laughter and gay phrases can be heard coming from the direction of Mr. Siehl's table in the teachers' lunchroom. The faculty gave a farewell banquet in his honor in order to show its appreciation to him for his excellent leadership. Their gift of lasting worth is a scholarship to be given in his name each year to the student who best qualifies. Other organizations of the school have also honored him in various ways. His kindness, patience, and tolerance shall always be remembered. Jfmuneliy mama-:mia wit his tacauQtly 'tillllccll with fiat? SIEHL At Dedication Exercises, September 10, l928. Long stood in virgin growth these Western Hills Bathed in the golden glow of setting suns For centuries, known to the white man and the red Crowned by the trees, enfolded by the river, Maiestically they watched changes, themselves unchanged But now great changes come: The land is cleared, the glebe is broken, By hundred men assemble, Steam shovels tear great caverns in these hills, Wood, iron, brick, stone, in seeming confusion thrown Men labor and the building grows, Little by little, sometimes leap by leap, Again slowly, but always upward, upward From the hills to the skies. Today it stands complete, Holding within itself lore of the past, hope for the future, Moving outward onthe sea of time Ready for its great adventure, A wide expanse its future lies, God grant we make it glorious. 14 0 iii Vi 'gzifggii i 2 I' 4.1136 A 4 all Z Q' Y. ,M G , 5' f f K Q- - , wr Q MX, -ff' , f f M ...M-0' WWMW , . v.,, W, ., I I 1 s Q ,, .V,, , K . ,kg ' I , r 1 W , 1 ff fi J . Marilyn, who assists the counselors in the afternoons, and Shirley, who helps Mr. Tower with the boys' absence and tardy slips, are junior secretaries while Blanche is the senior secre- tary. They handle all the correspondence, business problems, and administrative mat- ters that constantly arise in the course ofa busy school year. Mildred Huseman, who was not present when the picture was taken, is the school treasurer. All money mat- ters are ably managed by her. During the summer, the girls work untiringly and skill- fully on students' programs for the coming year. Without this competent office staff our school would not function as smoothly as it does. They deserve much praise for their ceaseless efforts which are directed towards making this an efficient institution. 33 - Q Gun uncfenlxtandlinq tacufltlg hIf1ClQQAl3E, nememlsenegfl ed! tim 710 , xx f - :N . Burns, have worked together to develop the theme, Hail and Farewell. This year the book, dedicated to Mr. Siehl and the senior class, is a small reminder of the good times, the hard work, and the friends we have made at Western Hills. Within these pages the staff has attempted to capture the spirit of the school by showing student life at its best. As each one bids Western Hills Farewell and Halls the future, he will be able to carry with him the memories of years well spent. The portrayals of the school year includes the philosophies of Mr. Siehl and the thoughts of the senior students. The art work of a book plays a major part in putting over an idea. The Art Editors, Donald Keiser, and Tom Heitkamp, are pictured above. Photography, too, is a primary factor in producing an annual. The clerks of the photography staff are pictured at the bottom, left. It is composed of Carol Barnhart, John Brown, and Louise Floyd. Their iob consists mostly of taking care of the photographs after they have been developed. The Art Staff is composed of capable work- ers. They are shown in the middle picture. Around the table, left to right, are B. Wag- ner, M. Rutledge, T. Heitkamp, N. Ruehrwein, L. Goehegan, and J. Kruse. Standing are D. Keiser, D. Mursinna, and P. Potts. Much of the photography of the Annual has been under the direction of the camera staff lt is be cause of the assistance of this staff that such excellent pictures have been constantly snapped Without visual reminders of life at Western Hills, the theme Hail and Farewell would not be complete. In the picture, above, left, we see G. Musekamp, and B. Jones checking photography equipment. Above right, D. Kerr and J. Stoeckle, the ace-photographers, prepare for action. The business of the Annual has been ably handled by the adver- tising manager, Bill Schroer, pic- tured at the left, with his assistant, Foster Terrell. Because of Bill's quick thinking and clear-cut man- ner, he has interested more than one person in this year's book. With an eye for business, he was on the look-out for advertising leads early in the year. Bill has had to lay out the advertising section of the Annual as well as to see that it was in good condi- tion financially. Although this iob doesn't get much recognition, it certainly deserves a lot of credit and praise. In this scene we see George Gibbs, after the death of Emily. His sorrow is great, but, with the help of others and the daily requisites of life, he is able to carry on. On the other hand, Emily Webb, eventually finds peace and rest in the new life into which she has been led. The play was directed and produced by Mr. T. K. F. Burns. A., the GirI's Athletic Association, is the equivalent of Maroon W. Girls from grades seven through twelve take an active part in this organization. Shirley Metz, a senior, wrote in an editorial that appeared in the Breeze. Character, sportsmanship, and comradeship --these are the ideals for which we strive in our girls' athletic program. This program could be compared to a ladder, each phase of the game represents a rung to be climbed. ln the past years the number of participants in girls' sports has grown surely and steadily. Fall, winter, and spring find hundreds of girls eagerly anticipating an exhilarating game of hockey, basketball, or tennis. Good character and sportsmanship go hand in hand. A girl who loses can cheer for the winning team if she has done her best on the playing field. She can win and not boast before the other team, and she can sincerely give a cheer for her opponents. Play-days and competitive intra-mural matches bring about many friendships which might not otherwise have resulted. The Senior G. A. A. Cabinet is the capable group which fulfills the administrative duties of this organization. Planning and original ideas emerge from them. Their little sister, and Junior G. A. A. has a similar cabinet. Both of them make plans that will develop the girl to the utmost. pf' The members of the Senior G. A. A. are sitting, left to right, S. Heckman, A. Moss, R. Moak, L. The Band under the direction of Mr. A. J. Brady had a very successful season. The members played for the football and basketball games and helped to furnish a great deal of the rousing spirit that carried the teams to victory. The blare of the horns and the beat of the drums accompanied the enthusiastic cheers that urged our boys on. The marching forma- tions were exceptional because ofthe members' fine cooperation. ln dry, wet, warm, or cold weather each player was out on the field practicing the marches so that they would be perfect on the nights of the big games. It is this group of boys and girls pictured above that makes up the efficient squad who sees to it that we get our lunches every day. Miss Gates, the school dietitian, guides these students in their work and straightens out any difficulties that arise. There are approximately forty-four students working in the lunchroom. They help by ringing up sales, taking care of dirty dishes, and by doing other necessary iobs. Our lunches are prepared by twenty-one cooks and one porter. Without the effort on the part of all these people, Western Hills would be a hungry place. 64 M. Glazie, S. Gilfillen, S. Cwlccsciniczcill knowledge hellpb. Although marred by a lone defeat, their record will go down in the annals of Western Hills' history. Confronted by a schedule, which contained several of the traditionally powerful up-staters, many doubtful opinions were expressed by the team's followers. Laying aside all fear of the on- coming opposition, our capable coaching staff, headed by Mr. Morgan, instilled in the team the will to win. After weeks of practice and drills, with emphasis on fundamental blocking and tackling, the boys were ready and willing to take the field for their initial game. Working with several of the more experienced players, Coach Nohr succeeded in developing a well balanced is - H I lll'1e. Behind the fine pitching of D. Hauck, B. Fulton, B. O'Toole, the Maroons began the year in high style, with consistent victories. EWR? With T. Salomone, ace shortstop, leading the team's batting, Western Hills was listed as one of the power teams of the league. Reaching the finals of the district tournament, the boys lost a bitter game' to Elder, 7-1. After the district defeat Coach Nohr's varsity went on to take the PHSL pennant. Ouuz tncrcleman fstneali to omanig on the Qiriclerigtirfrrtlri. With the crack of the starter's pistol, the track season at Western Hills is under way. Taking a tour around the V4 mile cinderpath, we can see straining figures, pounding down the straightaway for the century dash, coordination of speed and muscle at the discus circle, soaring bodies at the pole vault, and perfect team coopera- tion in the relays. As usual, because ot the varied events and the opportunities to put the body in good physical condition, there were many young aspirants ready and willing to better previous records. They were enthusiastic to surmount all obstacles in order to accomplish this. G nataactl the wwf lam wanthiy cjmnanenttb in QLQQ meats 1.,-Qslggggtkg. isveffgkgggtfsgiy wgtrqf ' ' . With the spirit of last year's championship team behind them, the 1946 cinder-men made ready for the opening meet. Calisthenics and running paved the way to better times and distances. The Maroons tabulated enough points to take everyone of their dual meets preceding the bigger meets. At the annual KC Relays a strong Withrow aggregation outpointed our boys for the championship. Along with the rest of the Cincin- nati teams, West Hi did not fare so well at the Miami Relays. The upstate teams proved too strong for us. Once again those boys from Withrow copped district and PHSL honors to take the championship from the halls of Western Hills. Despite these defeats, however, there were many individual per- formances that stood out during the season. M. Leonard, pole vault, D. Hoff, broad and high lumps, and L. Winningham, 440-yard dash man, highlighted the season. Special praise goes to P. Groeniger is undefeated in the 880-yard run. They have played in competition, coming through with few bruises and much satisfaction. Our honor basketball team, composed of the most capable players in the Junior and Senior classes, is pictured at the bottom. They are, left to right, J. Esslinger, G. Bertram, J. Hammer, J. Oberlander, I. Terry, M. Wehinger, P. Jones, J. Hauck, B. Dick, and A. Moss. At the above right, is a photograph of this enthusiastic group in action. Girl's volley ball has also fared well at Western Hills this year. The players have found that it takes brains as well as brawn to have a successful game. The season for this sport is not very long, so the girls report for practice twice a week. Volley ball is one of the favorite sports for girls and there is usually a great deal of excitement during the games. Above we see the winning team during a tense period. Above we find the girls' honor team waiting in line to take a turn at the bat. Play Ball is frequently heard when these girls get together. Girls' baseball with P. Gaskill as manager had a difficult time in getting started because of the rainy weather. Phyllis, however, brought her girls through in fine shape. The honor baseball team is pictured below right. We see left to right, G. Bertram, M. Wehinger, P. Jones, F. Zapf, J. Hauck, D. Ungerbuehler, N. Knauze, M. Williams, and P. Gaskill, kneeling. All of these enthusiastic players have worked industriously to perfect their phase of the game. The effort that the girls put forth is worthwhile, however, and each one of them will agree to that. It takes a good baseball game for a group to get to know each other as friends and co-workers. Working and playing together with their friends is one of the nicest memories the Seniors can take with them as they bid Western Hills farewell. Archery is one of the individual sports that is a favorite with many girls. The individual sports help to develop the girls' ' skill and deal more with the competitive spirit. The archer- ettes knew that it takes practise and skill to be a good Robin Hood, and many used their free periods to promote this art. The tournaments were also of great interest to everyone. At the bottom left, we see C. Barnhardt, archery manager, and L. Floyd ready for action. X m z if EQ? Q35 if fx' 1'-' 915262 .-Q ui .NJ ' w ' ' 4 1 .
