Through his experiences in the diversified industrial laboratories of Western Hills High School the student gains a good insight into many social, economic and technical prob- lems and acquires a valuable appreciation of the industrial world. -I-I. HERRLE The Household Arts Department HOUSEHOLD ARTS deals primarily with the activities that involve the home life of the girl. Its courses are designed to give a broader knowledge of home making and its relation to industry, child care, health, nutrition, clothing, and shelter. The girls are led to realize the advisability of train- ing for two vocations, home making and industry. ' 'il-:Alf ,. l3 I A iv: E 1 H ij iffp 'ji The Commercial Department COMMERCE is the basis of human activities. By it we mean that we are able to judge the progress and industry of nations. Every child will eventually be a spoke in the wheel of industry. The Commercial Depart- ment attempts to meet this need by training the normal youth in com- merce with such knowledge and skill as will enable him to earn a living in a recognized business activity. The course of study is made to fit the pupil and not for the pupil to fit the course. Every unit of the course is complete in itself. A student taking the first year's work in the Senior High School has enough knowledge or training to be ranked as a junior clerk. In the Junior High Schools all students in the eighth grade secure a general knowledge of business from the course of General Business Training required of all entrants. Thus the Commercial Department serves a double purpose giving both a general and a technical education, the one objective being efficient citizenship. -DALE ZELLER. I Q ,-il , . 5' 1 gf, 'fr The Music Department THE department of vocal music aims to give the pupils of Western Hills an appreciation of music which will enrich their leisure hours by regular class instruction and the activities of the Junior and Senior Choral Clubs. The instrumental music department offers both individual and class in- struction in any instrument of the band and orchestra. The Western Hills Band is prominent in all local and city-wide activities and the Junior and Senior orchestras are the center of all school programs.-A. V. MCFEE. The Art Department BY REVEALING the treasures of the World of art, by developing the imagii nation, and by refining the taste, the department of art attempts to place living on a higher plane. When our boys and girls become the citizens of tomorrow, We hope that for them the ugly, the unfit, and the unwhole- some will have no place, but that their inner life will be reflected in the city's homes, buildings, and parks, and that the spirit of harmony and beauty will everywhere prevail. -ALMIRA J EWETT TAYLOR.
