The Foreign Language Department IF WE are to aspire to a Cincinnati which will be a city Without limita- tions, its citizens must have a culture that Will make this possible. Cer- tainly those Who have studied a foreign language should have a vision which sees far beyond the hills of Cincinnati, to Spain, to Germany, to France, and to the glory that was Rome. Our school offers four-year courses in French, in German, and in Spanish. In Latin, besides the regular four-year course, there is an ex- ploratory course offered to all pupils of the eighth grade, to determine what pupils may continue their study of a language with profit. There is also a select group beginning Latin in the seventh grade. In the teaching of all these languages, though We may borrow from the best the past has to offer, our aims and methods are in conformity with what is officially accepted as the best modern thought.-LUELLA G. FOUCH. FOREIGN LANGUAGE FACULTY Left to rizht: Fouch, Hardman, Joseph, Kiel, Fallon, Herrle, Bolan. l26l l

The English Department IN TRAINING girls and boys for future American citizenship, the teacher finds no subject more essential than English, with its wealth of associa- Uons and Us nndtbhngualsynonynw. If the pupH is prepadng for a profession or the field of letters, his need for equipment in a cultural literature and in the spoken and written idiomatic speech of his country is obvious, but Mais none the less necessary in the business yvorkL vvhere the law of survival of the fittest unerringly operates. The fittest, or best equipped, is marked by superior vision, logical thinking, clear forceful presentation of ideas-all of which may be fostered through the study of linghsh. The purpose of teaching in generalis to Ht pupHs to adjust themselves to their future life environments. English not only contributes its share to this training, but it also opens, through the acquired powers of self-expression, limitless possibilities for the individual.--B. B. HARPER. The Social Studies Department THE teachers of social science realize that from the teaching of social science our boys and girls get most of their conceptions and beliefs con- cerning government, democracy, nationalism and internationalism. In fact the fruits of society are grown from social, economic and political food from these studies. We hope to develop in the pupil a spirit of co-operation with others in patriotic, wise, and uplifting serviceg and this, it is thought, may best be done by presenting great leaders as examples worthy of imitation. It is felt that every effort should be made to imbue every boy and girl with the fundamental principles and ideals for which America has always stood, that they may understand the foundation of their democracy, and the deep significance of American citizenship. All of this we hope may lead our boys and girls to aspire to such national and international ideals and relationships as 'will best work toward the achievements of love of justice, peace, and democracy throughout the whole World.-T.
