The Song squad is the defending State Champions. The dedica- tion, service, and caring are trademarks of Song and Cheer demonstrating their SPIRIT. 2— Disneyland salutes the ' 83- ' 84 CIF wres- tling champs of Western High School. For two straight years the Pioneer Varsity has captured their division of CIF. This years squad has quite a task ahead if they are going to repeat. 3— Students are a major part of school spirit TOOn 4— Looking at the tradition of Western only creates stronger SPIRIT and desire to succeed, not to let that SPIRIT die. .ELE l, WRtSTLWG CHAffPlONS — ■miim I I - RtSTUNG Opening 3 NEW BEGINNINGS Mr, Craig Haugen This is not only Haugen ' s first year at Western, but also his first year as a principal. He has spent his entire career in this district, working his way up from teacher to his present position. I sincerely feel lucky to have been appointed to Western. It ' s very refreshing to be in such a positive atmosphere. He sees Pioneer Pride as a need and very impor- tant, particularly in academics. When asked how he was going to boost the spirit at Western, he replied, How can I? The spirit is great already. All I can hope for is to maintain and support it. However, he would like to help the students reach their full potential. You need to expect more from the students to get more out of them. If you never expect them to do bet- ter than average, they won ' t. Haugen had some exposure to Western, having worked for a time at Orangeview, but his first en- counter with Western ' s staff was impressive. Dur- ing the summer I had the chance to meet every single teacher. At some time or another, everyone of them came through the office. That kind of dedication is unheard of. He feels there is a very positive attitude in the staff that is transferred to the students. Ms, Manemann Manemann comes to West- ern with years of exper- ience as an English teacher. She was very impressed with the kindness and co- operation of the students at Western. Ms. Bosna This returning counselor is very glad to be back at Western after her one year leave. She now handles Schol- arships and Finan- cial Aid, also. Mr, Pascal One of the things he enjoys most is watching kids grow from the time they are a freshman to the time they leave Western as a Senior. Ms, Kline The dedicated staff impressed this new A.P. Everyone went out of their way to in- troduce themselves and be friendly. I felt like I really belonged. Mr, Cross . Cross was over- whelmed with the in- volvement of parents and students. The don- ated time and commit- ment preparing for an- other school year sim- ply amazed him. Freshmen Life begins anew at Western, and freshmen are faced with many differences and a year full of adjustments. I ' m suddenly the youngest again. The biggest adjustment was going from the top to the bottom again. I had a hard time finding my way around school. The biggest difference was having to use a bottom locker. The work is harder and you have to be responsible for your- self. I was afraid I ' d have to kiss the W in the gym. The upper-classmen knew the teachers, the schedule, the classes and we knew nothing ... It was scary. I couldn ' t believe how big everybody was!!! Mrs, Golobay Golobay hopes to help A.S.B. develop their com- munication and organi- zation skills. They are permitted to exercise their responsibility and grow as individuals. ' - - «i)(. 46 PIONEER PRIDE 1— Del Louis returns it all the way as Var- sity Football has an 8-2 record for a great year and into CIF. 2— Song and Cheer create PRIDE through hard work and arousing school spirit. These girls spend hours of their time giving to Western High School. 3— PRIDE in victory, PRIDE in our Alma Mater, PRIDE in ourselves is the spirit at Western. 4 — The school band supports the school and creates PRIDE in so many ways. They practice early in the morning, play at assemblies, go to sports events, and march in parades and shows and bring honor to our campus. 6 Opening 1— Water polo advaqced to CIF once again after a successful season. 2— Girls tennis moved to CIF play-offs led by Angela Clement. 3— Western was superbly represented in 1984 Olympic Games by Tall Flag Team members. Standing — left to right — Michelle Browing, Daniele Meis, Kelly Jensen, Donna Adams, Mi- chelle Meis, Debbie Olsen, and Sonya Luellan; kneeling in front are Stacy Roll and Liz Dayton. A job well done girls. 4— The Western symbol stands for a proud tradition and a great heritage. 5— PRIDE is having fun, representing your school, showing your spirit. At ' Western WE HAVE IT ALU! Opening 7 PIONEERS THRIVE ON ASSEMBLY POWER Pioneer Spirit and Pride are rekindled at Pep Assemblies. The enthusiasm of the students, band, Cheer, and Song help build PRIDE in our teams and our school. The gym really rocks with SPIRIT and the message is felt by all who participate. 1 — Brian Hudson and Del Louis are faithful to our Alma Mater 2 — Class competition goes to the one with the big mouths 3 — Freshmen ease into the SPIRIT 4— The Bell tolls for all who oppose the Pio- neers 5— ' Donna ' Crosby and ' Hairless ' Trent lead cheers and the rest of the squad 6— Sometimes a Thriller is needed to spur the team to victory — just ask Chris Reno 7— ' Dickita ' Parks helps Coach Pascal generate spirit 8 — Tim Rosen and Candy Paranteau lead Seniors to still another triumph. 8 Opening TERRORIFIC SONG AND CHEER -Mascot, Tracy Stark, ponders our next Pep As- sembly and the coming season.
