HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1937 A PLAY IN THREE ACTS PROLOGUE: 1933-1934 CAST: Chairman-Helen Chenoweth Vice-Chairman and Secretary-jean Knipp Chorur-Class of 1937 At the close of the first meeting of the juveniles, they started off their happy years at Western by entertaining themselves. As is customary their sisters, the under- studies, later in the year entertained them at the junior-Freshmen Party. Thus the Class of 1937 started on its career at Western. Act I-1934-35 CAST: President-Helen Chenoweth Vice-Prerident-Ruth Buettner Treamrer-Elaine Wood Secretary-Doris Herr Clyorzu-Class of 1937 SCENE I-Sophomore Rally-December 7 The juveniles were for this one day the leaders of the school. At the assembly they presented a morality sketch entitled Everystudent and also sang, for the first time, their class song which is to the tune of Marching Along Together. At three o'clock there was a dance in the gymnasium. SCENE II-Sophomore-Senior Party-May 3 In the auditorium the veterans were given the keys to Western and entertained with a Diet Duet, Romeo and Juliet, The Discovery of the Western World, and 1935 Takes the Cake. These sketches were followed by a dance in the gym. All too soon, the curtain fell on the last activity of their sophomore year. Act II-1935-36 CAST: Preridenl-Helen Chenoweth Vice-President-Margaret Ascherfeld Secretary-Doris Herr Trearurer-Lee Sheridan Claorur-Class of 1937

SCENE I-Junior-Freshmen Party-February 14 The understudies escorted their younger sisters, the juveniles, to the auditorium where a marionette show of jack and the Bean Stalk was presented. After the enter- tainment they all danced in the gym. SCENE Il-Junior Day-March 30 Again they became leaders of the school for a day. This year, as understudies, they wore white dresses and talisman roses, the two distinguishing marks of upper classmen. Ida Black, Julia Rose Collinson, Sylvia Finkelstein, Sylvia Karasik, Martha jane Koontz, Charity Seluzetsky, Edith Rubin and Elyse Goldman were in the cast of Three Pills in a Bottle, which was the name of the play presented at the morning assembly. SCENE III-Boatride--june 5 For weeks they worked on attractive favors for the annual junior-Senior Boatride. The curtain, however, never went up for this scene because the new boat, Dixie, which had been engaged, did not arrive in time. Consequently, as the second act closed there was a certain tragic note existing throughout the entire cast. Ad III-1936-57 CAST: Prerident-Ida Black Viee-President-Helen Chenoweth Alternate Vive-PreJident+Elaine Wood Secretary-Doris Herr Treasurer-Frances Miller Alternate Trearurer-Elaine Wood Chorus-Class of 1957 SCENE I-Senior Day, October 19 Veterans, at last! Their long anticipated Senior Day had finally arrived. The Reverend Jarvis Morris was the speaker. He told them to learn to climb down, not to take advantage of their position, to learn to play second fiddle, and to learn to assume the responsibility of setting an example. As they left the auditorium, each girl felt as if she had many things to live up to. SCENE II-Senior Play-December 23 Winifred Ward distinguished herself as the heroine of Green Stockings. In the play she was the sister whose feigned engagement became, through many complica- tions, a reality. The remainder of the cast also helped to make Green Stockings a most successful production.
