PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF THE WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL IN BALTIMORE DEDICATION S400 To ELIZABETH J. GERHARDT, in cirzcere appreciation of her untiring effortx and cheerful cooperation in making our high .rchool day: a memorable experience, we, The Clan of 1957, gralefully dedicate thif book. MISS I5I,IZABliTll GISRHARDT FOREWORD vw WE HAVE CHOSEN the stage as the theme of our book, for we feel that our years in Western High School, our little theater, have been like a melodrama containing, it is true, tragic, disheartening scenes but varied with countless joyous ones. In our freshmen and sophomore years as wide-eyed juveniles, frightened just a wee bit at the unaccustomed glare of the footlights, we turned often to the ever ready support and guidance of the veteran actors, the Seniors, and the patient directors and stage hands, our teachers. As Juniors we were elevated to the coveted position of understudies where we, accustomed now to the bright lights, prepared to take our places in our senior year as the veteran actors. In this position we not only worked harder at rehearsals and enjoyed to a fuller extent the applause but also helped some of those in our sister year with their cues. Now at last we have reached the happy-ending, graduation, and retire from the stage satisfied in the conviction that we have done our best through cooperation to make our production a success. CONTENTS FACULTY - DRAMATICS ACTIVITIES ' C L A S S E S ATHLETICS 0 FEATURES HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1937 A PLAY IN THREE ACTS PROLOGUE: 1933-1934 CAST: Chairman-Helen Chenoweth Vice-Chairman and Secretary-jean Knipp Chorur-Class of 1937 At the close of the first meeting of the juveniles, they started off their happy years at Western by entertaining themselves. As is customary their sisters, the under- studies, later in the year entertained them at the junior-Freshmen Party. Thus the Class of 1937 started on its career at Western. Act I-1934-35 CAST: President-Helen Chenoweth Vice-Prerident-Ruth Buettner Treamrer-Elaine Wood Secretary-Doris Herr Clyorzu-Class of 1937 SCENE I-Sophomore Rally-December 7 The juveniles were for this one day the leaders of the school. At the assembly they presented a morality sketch entitled Everystudent and also sang, for the first time, their class song which is to the tune of Marching Along Together. At three o'clock there was a dance in the gymnasium. SCENE II-Sophomore-Senior Party-May 3 In the auditorium the veterans were given the keys to Western and entertained with a Diet Duet, Romeo and Juliet, The Discovery of the Western World, and 1935 Takes the Cake. These sketches were followed by a dance in the gym. All too soon, the curtain fell on the last activity of their sophomore year. Act II-1935-36 CAST: Preridenl-Helen Chenoweth Vice-President-Margaret Ascherfeld Secretary-Doris Herr Trearurer-Lee Sheridan Claorur-Class of 1937 SCENE I-Junior-Freshmen Party-February 14 The understudies escorted their younger sisters, the juveniles, to the auditorium where a marionette show of jack and the Bean Stalk was presented. After the enter- tainment they all danced in the gym. SCENE Il-Junior Day-March 30 Again they became leaders of the school for a day. This year, as understudies, they wore white dresses and talisman roses, the two distinguishing marks of upper classmen. Ida Black, Julia Rose Collinson, Sylvia Finkelstein, Sylvia Karasik, Martha jane Koontz, Charity Seluzetsky, Edith Rubin and Elyse Goldman were in the cast of Three Pills in a Bottle, which was the name of the play presented at the morning assembly. SCENE III-Boatride--june 5 For weeks they worked on attractive favors for the annual junior-Senior Boatride. The curtain, however, never went up for this scene because the new boat, Dixie, which had been engaged, did not arrive in time. Consequently, as the second act closed there was a certain tragic note existing throughout the entire cast. Ad III-1936-57 CAST: Prerident-Ida Black Viee-President-Helen Chenoweth Alternate Vive-PreJident+Elaine Wood Secretary-Doris Herr Treasurer-Frances Miller Alternate Trearurer-Elaine Wood Chorus-Class of 1957 SCENE I-Senior Day, October 19 Veterans, at last! Their long anticipated Senior Day had finally arrived. The Reverend Jarvis Morris was the speaker. He told them to learn to climb down, not to take advantage of their position, to learn to play second fiddle, and to learn to assume the responsibility of setting an example. As they left the auditorium, each girl felt as if she had many things to live up to. SCENE II-Senior Play-December 23 Winifred Ward distinguished herself as the heroine of Green Stockings. In the play she was the sister whose feigned engagement became, through many complica- tions, a reality. The remainder of the cast also helped to make Green Stockings a most successful production. SCENE III-Mid-Year Farewell Assembly-january 29 Everyone liked Mr. Morris so well that he returned to speak at the Mid-Year Farewell Assembly. Now, some of the girls of 1937 were going to graduateg others realized that june would soon be here. SCENE IV-Mid-Year Commencement and Prom-February 16 and 17 For the first time the February graduation was held at the Polytechnic Institute. Here one hundred and thirty-nine members of the class of 1937 received their diplomas. The following night the girls and their escorts were swinging from 9 to 12:30 to the music of Charles Vincent's orchestra at the Belvedere. SCENE V-Sophomore-Senior Party-April 16. As they were being entertained by the juveniles, their minds wandered back to a day in May two years ago when they, as juveniles, had entertained the Class of 1935. It was great fun to be guests instead of hostesses. SCENE VI-Farewell Assembly--June 4 Their last assembly! The auditorium was beautifully decorated by their under- studies for this, their last day. After hearing an excellent address, they realized that all too soon their days at Western had drawn to a close. They left with hearts filled with love for Western. l J-.4 LQnll.JI-JI.. .l w 4: 'eM:,sm: '1 My . - ' -1 , .. : LR .F , Fu , , ' ua. .fi Uv' F ' w W ww. It gives experience and training to the commercial high school students. To obtain this experience, the members of the club help the members of the faculty by acting as secretaries. To be eligible for membership in the Service Club, a student must have an average of at least seventy and must not be deficient in any subject. The club meets on the second Wednesday of every month. It is under the guidance of Miss Alford. 86 THE PLAYERS' GUILD ROBERTA WARD Prariderzt DOROTHY KATZ PEGGY Pizomsm Vive-Prefident Trearlfrer RUTH MALESON Miss HALEY Serrelary Family Adzifei' RUTH CoRD1sH Chairman of Progmnz Commiltee There has almost always been some sort of dramatic club at Western-its activity varying with the degree of industry and talent shown by its members. Several years ago the old organization, its joints creal-:ing a little with age, was restored to healthy vigor and re-christened The Players' Guild . This year it was decided, in an effort to increase that vigor further, to restrict membership to those third and fourth year girls who could prove that they had some genuine ability and interest in dramatics. From the hundred and forty applicants-a sure sign that the lure of the footlightsn is still with us-a student-faculty committee of judges elected to membership seventy- five girls, some of whom are interested in acting, others in stage-craft. Monthy meet- ings are planned with the purpose of including as many phases of dramatics as pos- sible, from acting to make-up. Those girls who are interested in plays from a literary point of view make a study of some of the leading modern playwrights. 87 GLEE CLUB AND ORCHESTRA The Glee Club and Orchestra, under the capable direction of Mrs. Masson, have been for many years among the most important institutions at Western. They lend invaluable assistance at the assemblies and take complete charge of the annual operetta, and of the carol sings which are given at the Pro-Cathedral each Christmas. 88 LATIN CLUB MARGARET WELLS Firrl C anrzzl MARTHA JANE KOONTZ Semnd Conml ROBERTA WARD ELYSE GOLDMAN S?fl'6'fcll'j' Tl'6d.fIH'6'l' JANET WHEELER Doars TRAPP Third Year Reprexeulatizfe Serwzd Year Re,f1re,fe11latiz'e MARY LAWL ER Firrf Year Re,fJre,re11ti1liz'e The Latin Club of Western High School was formed for the purpose of familiar- izing those girls who study Latin with old Roman customs and with the Rome of Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil. At each monthly meeting either a play depicting phases of Roman life or some form of entertainment following Roman customs is presented. The event to which every member looks forward is the Roman banquet given in May. This banquet, resembling in every detail the banquets of ancient Rome, is indeed a fitting climax for the activities of the Latin Club. 39 THE CAMERA CLUB HELEN BARBER Preridefzt ALICE BLADES RUTH SUROSKY Serrelary Hike Chairman AUDREY KORNMAN VIRGINIA BURGAN Treamrer Party Chairman The Camera Club, an organization consisting of seventy physics pupils, has the following objectives: 1. Informal or group printing is held on every Tuesday and Thursday. There are no dues, and the meetings are held twice a month. 92 STUDENT ACTIVITY COMMITTEE RUBY YOUNG MARTHA JANE KOONTZ WINNIFRED GOULD VIVIAN MAJOR DOROTHEA ROGAN The Student Activity Committee, an organization for the purpose of promoting interest in school activities, both athletic and non-athletic, is made up of ten members. Five of these are faculty representatives appointed by Dr. Becker, and five, students selected by the respective year advisers. These members together decide who are to receive the awards which are presented at the end of each term. There are twenty senior awards made each year, divided proportionately between midyear and june stu- dents, and nine junior awards. S. A. And indeed, this bow was a graceful one! The Rally started with a morality play, Everystudent. This sketch set an example so fine that the class of '37 could not have helped but follow the path to success which it portrayed. Virtue conquered vice in Everystudent, just as it has in the class of '57. The plot grows from the old English country custom of an unmarried older sister's wearing green stockings at the wedding of a younger sister. In order to ward off the possibility of having to wear green stockings, the heroine spreads the news that she has a suitor in the army and invents the name of john Smith for him. By a quirk of events, the make-believe becomes a reality. There is a Colonel John Smith enlisted in the service of the army. As may be suspected, fate has it that the two shall meet, and wedding bells ring for Celia and Colonel Smith. Madge, Evelyn, Phyllis and Celia are sisters in the play, William Faraday is the father, Colonel Smith is the hero, Aunt Ida is Celia's only true friend, jimmy Raleigh, Henry Steele, and Admiral Grice are rivals for Celia's affections, Tarver is Phyllis's fiance, and Martin is a family servant. What an achievement it was, and how the characters presented it! Never to be forgotten is the laudable acting of Sylvia Finklestein as Colonel J. N. Smith, the lovable portrayal of Celia by Winifred Ward, the superb presentation of William Faraday by Annette Filtzer, the brisk, matter-of-fact Admiral Grice by Betty Steuart, the outstand- ing performance of Rena Klein as Aunt Ida, Edythe Rubin's natural portrayal of jimmy Raleigh, Adele Miller's aristocratic representation of Evelyn, the capable performance of Phyllis by Lee Sheridan, the unforgettable acting of Helen Chenoweth as Madge, the comical presentation of Tarver by Marjorie Banks, the smooth acting of Zelda Gold- smith as Steele, and Helen Quimby as our formal butler, Martin. The story and the characters of our Senior Play will remain a long time in the memory book of our minds. 99 THE MIKADOM Arriving even a half hour ahead of time, one had dilhculry in flnding a seat in the Auditorium on Friday evening, April ninth. The Glee Club and Orchestra were presenting The Mikado, that well-known comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, and everyone seemed to have come early in anticipation of a pleasant evening. Judging from the enthusiastic applause and the frequent chuckles at the humorous lines, no one was disappointed. The music of The Mikado was particularly tuneful, and many of the audience were heard humming their favorite numbers as they left at the end of the performance. The soloists and chorus acquitted themselves with glory-putting much life and action into their parts. The costumes, with two or three exceptions, were made by the girls themselves, and were very colorful and becom- ing. The beautiful scenery was designed and made by the Art Major Class under Miss Laura Alford's direction. 100 , ,, HW-, .,-,., I W M ' f - - -f H --- - f '- ' wr::::::---+177 rr-2---x:..w f W ,Y -4-2 ,,,,,,, ,:::::: ,.,.pu.,, ,,.....w.?nn-l 44 1A,., V 6 74' V ' V. ff? 1 I , f' 1 . fax .l' .,-.,.w, , 5 X543 If f.: 11 Lffmvi me , . ,ff '7:':':f ,R , -in 1 I :EFL ' 5:1 X53 'S..'4,.g ri F r 'Mir-LU 1 AL My . , V x . , V Q .1 g a -' -, m 1 Jiri .-Q A K Q 1' 1 sw-Q 1 'T k ' H L I 7-is ,I .. ,K ,..1 Q , -N 4, .Tj Q , ,-ivxjnfi 75 --YQ ' fi: AL' fx 'j:,,i-- f1S'.:i5'-f. - '. 1 We- , .1.g. 75.13, ,QI .Q A 9 . .4 .n ifliff. -'if' ' - ', , . Annette Filtzer, best dressed woman in America wins trip abroad! Here we find her aboard the sensational new airplane, accompanied by her dress designers, the Misses Miriam Kolodner and Sybil Fedder. What! Could it be? It is-the United States Olympic team bound for the 1947 contests in Paris. Here are Margaret Wells, famous swimmer, Ethel Doxzon, sprinter, Betty Steuart, tennis champion, Lillian Patz, acrobat, and Helen Ogier, called by critics the Sonja Henie of today. Oh! here we are at the imposing chateau of the eminent Dr. Margaret Ascherfeld. Among the guests we find, Frances Miller, United States Ambassador to France, Ida Black, President of the International Labor Union of the League of Nations, and Missionary Dr. Martha jane Koontz, who is a member of the expedition of which Rev. Augusta O'Donald is the head. Now the lights are dimmed, a hush falls over the guests and Margaret Miller, the second Pavlova, dances exquisitely. Next Edith Wright performs equally well on piano, violin and 'cello. Ruth Buettner now plays an excep- tionally difficult and beautiful composition of her own. As a fitting climax to the entertainment, Marjorie Lehman, Metropolitan Opera prima donna sings several lovely arias. Let us now visit the Mme. Curie laboratory near Paris, where experimentation in the breaking up of protons and electrons is being carried on. We are fortunate enough to secure an interview with the learned scientists, Doctors Roberta Rosenthal and Ruth Ellen Musser, who are in charge of the research. Let us enjoy some of the Paris night life by a visit to the theater where Winifred Ward and Rena Klein are giving an inspiring performance of Elyse Goldman's latest ultra ultra, The Wise Why or Children by the Hour. They are becoming widely known for their portrayal of mother and daughter roles. We Marjorie are now privileged to attend a meeting of the exclusive Mary, Margaret and Club. Marjorie Bank is presiding over the meeting of the organization, the members of which are: Mary Bene Mary Reed Margaret Tolley Mary Birely Mary Reisett Margaret White Mary Gamboz Mary Waters Margaret Wilson Mary Graham Margaret Childress Margaret Wimmer Mary Greenwood Margaret Culler Marjorie DeFord ' Mary Hudson Margaret Duchon Marjorie Diamond Mary Lydon Margaret Hollander Marjorie Mathewson Mary Magruder Margaret Hemmings Marjorie Satterlee Mary Meyers Margaret Lutz Marjorie Schwartzman Mary Mickey Margaret Munder A visit to Paris would not be complete without a glimpse of La Petite Shoppe decorated by Eleanor Lobe. Here we see Helen Chenoweth modeling gracefully the superb creations of Nancy Lee Rhodes. On leaving the shop, we buy a copy of the first international newspaper which is edited by the prominent Americans, Evelyn Nechamkin and Evelyn Poffenberger. On an inside page, we recognize the smiling countenance of Doris Barkley-in a tooth paste advertisement. XX.1gmi ALL'S WILL THAT ENDS WILL As our senior year terminates, and as our career as actresses on Western's stage closes-for as Mr. Shakespeare said, All the world IS a stage-we leave the following properties for the general welfare of the theatre that has been the scene of our little melodrama: Escalators so that the new understudies will not confuse up and down stairways. A Green Room for students who find class periods boring. flf there is an overflow, the class of '58 can enlarge the Green Room.j An amplifying system for young ladies who do not have the luck to sit in the orchestra circle. A sound-proof music room so that pupils throughout the building will not burst into song during a written examination. Plush seats in the auditorium so that at least we can sit in comfort while listening to boring speeches. QNow, whom can we mean?j To Miss Gerhardt we leave a quart of smelling salts to cure the headache that must be hers after having coached her actresses so successfully throughout their career. To Miss Arnold, who kept the books for our production, we leave an adding machine. To Miss Wagner and Miss Corbett, who were successful in getting out our pro- duction book, we leave a goldbound copy. Ida Black leaves her ability to charm an audience to the next leading lady. Ruth Ellen Musser leaves her intelligence to the next braintrust of Western. Helen Chenoweth leaves her charming smile to anyone who wishes to step into the lime-light. Doris leaves Herr ability to anyone who is Note doing so well as secretary of the company. Margaret Ascherfeld leaves her ability to take a shower in three seconds to any- one who doesn't want to be late for her cue. Frances Miller leaves her ability for salesmanship to the next treasurer who finds it difficult to collect funds. To our sister class, 1939, we leave our motto Co-operation , for without co- operation both behind the scenes and before the footlights, no theatrical production can succeed. To our understudies, the juniors, we leave the entire stage in full confidence that their careers will be in the best Western tradition. Miss Haupt's directing ability in the student council and elsewhere is to be returned to her capable hands. Miss Bachrach's guidance is left to the juveniles who will certainly need it. AND-last but not least, we return Dr. Becker's jokes to him so that he may use them in speaking to the actresses in next year's drama. And as we now take our last curtain call, we shall gracefully bow, with the well- known maxim in mind:-ALL'S WILL THAT ENDS WII.L . 116 A MESSAGE Hu',L'Jl1l'c1l'd Ho! repre.re11f.r lhe final mzzfribzftion of the Clan of 1937 fo u',6.flL'l'lI High Sebool. 111 il are remnled Ike Ullfjldlldfllg 6l'6lIfJ' in lhe hlrlory of flve rlf1.f,r.
