1964 BEACON WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL DETROIT MICH. School of Champions ' ' I We the staff of the 1964 Beacon have tried to bring to you with this edition, a glimpse of the accomplishments of past graduates, the story of your high school year, and an inspiration to students of Western— the future graduates. We hope it wi 11 be a ' Beacon ' to show you the path to successful achieve- ment through the encouragement of a faithful faculty and the personal desires for accomplishment of each individual student. The name ' School of Champions ' is well applied to Western High School. Every field of endeavor is represented by graduates of this school - sports, business, the teaching profession. All of the former graduates interviewed stres- sed the importance of education, as much as we can accomplish, for the betterment of our own lives and for the contribution to the welfare of the community. A ' Champion ' is generally thought of in terms of achieving in sports but champions are those who defend any cause— a political belief, a conviction of faith, those who raise their family by American standards through honest and re- warding labor. It is our hope that this Class of 1964 will ' Champion ' the cause for a better family, a better country, and a better world. I . Mr. John Bickel, counselor of Study Hall 102, left Western for Wilbur Wright after acting as a counselor here for the past 15 years. The trans- fer became effective Feb. 10. Mr. Bickel first came to Detroit in 1929 after receiving his bachelor ' s degree in Kansas. He taught chemistry at Jefferson while earning a master ' s degree from the University of Michigan. In all he has spent 40 years in the educational field. Students will recall last year when Mr. Bickel capably served as acting assistant principal following the death of Mr. Douglas Salisbury. Faculty and students wish him well in his new job. Mr. Bickel pauses for a moment to look over his study hall. ! § Mr. James S. Connel, Class of 1913, was not only a graduate of Western, he returned as a teacher of business subjects and served our school 38 years. He worked first in an office, served in the Army, and then entered college. Mr. Connell ' s words of wisdom for today ' s students are, Be on time, regular in attendance, and do not be afraid to do more than your share of work. In his retirement Mr. Connell serves the community through civic organizations. Trains Future Servicemen This course offers young men of Western basic military training with full credit for a completed course. Western is always ranked high in city-wide com- petition. Service in some branch of the military is in the foreseeable future of most boys, and this experience combined with regular high school courses offers a graduate a distinct advantage. Whether playing peppy marches at football games or exciting and breathtaking pieces as the Westside Story and the First Movement, our band un- der the direction of Mr. Poniatowski, displays that fine quality that is common throughout Western. All this is achieved through hard and endless work. The band members put in many hours of practice. Not only do they have their regular second hour for rehear- sal, but early morning and after school rehearsals as well. These rehearsals, plus that little extra something given by each member, helps our band to perform at its best in school and at outside engagements. It adds the rhythm and swing to the School of Cham- pions on parade. Mr. Poniatowski seems pleased with the results he ' s getting with Western ' s band. No band can do without a trombonist. Western ' s traditional talent show starring Zeke and Zelda, was held November 21 and 22 in the school auditorium. After landing on the moon, Western ' s Cowboys and Cowgirls found many fine talents. Costumed for a Christmas Around the World Travelog, the cast sang and danced to music from foreign countries. Choir skaters presented special arrangements of the Skaters Waltz and other winter melodies, while another girl ' s choir, as carolers, sang versions df Christmas songs. The Boy ' s Choir, as football players, sang a a selection of rousing football tunes. Mr. Poniatowski and the Band set the tone and scene for Mrs. Frances Bogart ' s Songspurs, who, as world travelers home for the Christmas holidays, sang special holiday numbers. Going into the Cody game with unmatched deter- mination, the Cowboys played their best game of the season. The scoring started out as quarterback Ken Kish connected on a thirty-yard touchdown aerial to end, Ken Burrell. Cody struck back by scoring once on an end run and once on a fullback dive play. Things were looking dim with only minutes left to play when halfback Ray Williams took the ball in to tie the game up. Sophomore halfback Danny Moore drove in for the tie-breaking extra point. Cody ' s last threat was erased when defensive halfback Steve Vigh intercepted a Cody pass. The Cowboys had come close to victory in the Mackenzie game when halfback Danny Moore scored in the first minutes of play on a 60 sprint. Then the Stags struck back by scoring 19 points putting the game out of reach. A new addition to the coaching staff was Mr. Bill Rankin. He volunteered his time and effort to aid Coach Hal Beardsley in forming a thirty-one player squad of which only five were seniors. This large number of experienced players, which will return in the fall, should be what the Cowboys need to reach the top next season. The outlook is bright. Ken Burrell, No. 81, catches a pass from Chadsey with teammate Alfred Jones, 38, coming over to help. • liiK ' i George Davis sets up winning touch- down with long run around end against Cody. The most outstanding game of the season was with Wilbur Wright. In this one Wright ' s sharpshooters passed the century mark by netting 101 points. Western tossed in 89 which combined set a state record for the number of points scored by both teams in a game. The Cowboys ' main handicap was that too many of the players were green from lack of experience. Eight of the fifteen players were not on the squad at the beginning. This, along with the fact that only one senior was on the starting team, was why the Cowboys didn ' t have better than a .385 season. Under the perennial coaching of Mr. Higgins, Western ' s hopes for the West Side Championship were far from being pessimistic. With All-City player Tom Keating returning, Coach Higgins had more room to manipulate his roster because of Keating ' s versatility. With City-Champ Redford High being the team to beat, Coach Higgins said his team expects to Sur- prise a few of the others. Last year ' s coaching addition, Mr. Cochran, was back again to help Coach Higgins with the team. Tom Keating is demonstrating the cor- rect way of hitting. 54 for Good Season SCHEDULE Northwestern May 1 Chadsey May 5 Wilbur Wright May 8 Redford May 12 Mackenzie May 15 Coo ley May 19 Cody May 22 Henry Ford May 26 Southwestern May 28 City Championship June 9 Martinez is pitching. Coach Beardsley hopes that this year ' s team, with a backbone of three returning letter men, Bill Moosekian, Joe Moosekian and TedSamples, will have a better season than last years. They hope to beat Chadsey Southwestern, but think they will give everyone a good fight. Joe Moosekian, a returning letterman, shows his ability at serving. I ' ' Track Team in a Rebuilding Year The 1964 track and field team was one of the strongest and best balanced to represent Western in the last few years. This year the team came under the coaching of Mr. Bill Ran- kin, the assistant football coach. Running strong in the mile was John Garza, holder of city and state honors. The pxile vault was led by Alfred Jones, an eleventh grader. In the sprint, Wyatt Griffith had good speed. He was assisted by Lige Ridley and Irvan Kyler in the relays. The shot-put was also a strong event with a number of boys throwing the shot. Row 1: I. Kyler, D. Williams, A. Jones, ]. Anderson, Nolan, M. Brown, C. Henderson, J. Cistrunk, C. Sher- man. Row 2: T. John Garza and Ray Barber running the mile. 57 Girls Compete in Tennis The girl ' s tennis team was the only com- petitive sport open to girls of Western this year because of lack of funds. The girls started practicing in the gym in March and came to the courts the first week of April. They will have six matches, four of which are away. Since there is only one returning letter-winner, L. Daniels, and the majority of the team are 10th graders, this will be a season of trial and error that will build a strong team for next year. Pat Stackhouse demonstrates the proper follow through. Row 1: C. Fuller, J. Hall, L. Reitzel, P. Hall, A. Gillain, C. West, G. Smith. Row 2: S. Steele, P. Stackhouse, L. Daniels, B. Armstrong, J. During high school Mr. Wilson was a member of the orchestra and the Debating Club. He worked three years after graduating, served in the Army and there learned first-hand how important a college education could be. Mr. Wilson joined a friend who was already practicing law and recommends this method of getting started in law. Now Mr. Wilson ' s own son is associated with him.
