The experience th, girls have gained this season will make for a much improved team when the next swim season rolls around. These girls do not lack school spirit, or determination or any of the things that make a win- ning team, but the lack of ex- perience on the part of new swimmers handicapped the veterans, making it difficult to achieve victory at every meet. But the girls are eager to learn and are improving daily, so that they will be able to take the places of those graduating and keep 'Western on top as it has al- ways been. Q, C From the first day I entered Western, my greatest ambition was to be invited to a senior prom. Year after year as araauation time approached I would put on my most alluring manner in the vain hope that some boy woula ask me to the prom and year after year I was disappointed But last year the long awaited 1nv1 tation finally came from Herman Schoclheirner voted by h1s class as the boy most likely I-Iermar' is really very cute and terribly intelligent When his chemistry teacher asked what was the chief use of uranium Her man answered that if you used it for bait you could go nuclear fishm Imaglne how thr1lled I was to be invited by a boy with such a superior intellect I decided to splurge and bought the strapless even 1ng gown But for some strong reason my mother didn t approve and gave me the choice of either taking back that thing las my mother called itl or moving out of the house I didnt think living at the Y would be very exciting so I returned 1t To compensate for my loss Mom bought me a bottle of perfume called Pr1m1t1ve Passion Guaranteed to br1ng a zombie to life sa1d the ad So I had hope that it would work on Herman The day of the prom finally arrived and I was ready in the record time of 7 hours IO minutes and 14 5 seconds But boys still insist that it takes a girl forever to get ready to go out Tsk tsk tsk such a falsehood Herman had rented a tuxedo for the prom and I must say that he looked very suave Of course he would have looked much better if he could have gotten his own size but he was really very cute with his WIISIS sticking out of his sleves lust like Ichabod Crane in the Legend of Sleepy Hollow Because hrs hot rod was 1n the garage with a bad case of leakage of the gas tank we drove to the prom 1n Mr Schoclheimer s car Every time I look at those purple fenders and that yellow body with the orange lettering all over it I In less than an hour we arr1ved at the dance As We entered the orchest a was playing a waltz the lights were low and I sighed happily This was my most perfect dream come true and I had the whole beautiful evening to enjoy Herman completed the pic ture by being the perfect example of a southern gentle man He swept me a low bow ana asked if he could have the pleasure of that dance I said Yes and we waltzed out onto the floor After the waltz we danced a fox trot and then a rhumba and after each num ber Herman would bow low and tell me how much he enloyed the dance Id smile and thank him very sweetly all the time hoping he would catch on to the fact that he was dancing on my feet mstead of the floor Well everything went fine unt1l the fourth bow when Hermans suit d1d what came naturally When Herman straightened up with a surprised and dismayed expression on his face and slowly backed out the French windows into the garden I couldnt for the life of me imagine what was wrong But then I realized what had happened and instead of quietly slipping through a crack 1n the floor Cas I fervently wished I could dol I did the next best thing and slipped into the garden Herman and I spent the rest of the evening walking in the garden where rt was very dark but it was far from romantic belleve me After everyone else had gone Herman and I snuck into his car and drove silently home Day and Night Service COMPLETE LINE OF GENUINE PARTS anl ACCESSORIES FREE DELIVERY WEST VERNOR Chevrolet Co L17 l...l TRUCKS ENGINEERED TO YOUR LOAD 3830 W v H at W Gflggttgdwy IlIASl1mOO 5 2740 MICHAEL S CLOTHES Mens Cloth1ng and Furnishings Complete Line of Formals to Rent lgadedaff !Conclus1onl victory pitching a beaut1ful ball Against Northwestern Ralph personally accounted for five runs of the seven scored He hit a triple and smacked a double with bases loaded This year before starting the regular season West ern had some trouble getting started in the early prac tice gan'es The Cowboys seemed to lack the needed batting punch even though the team was potentially a power laden squad The most impressive pre season win was the Cowboys defeat of Miller 11 0 As the season started U of D Mackenzie and North western were rated as the teams to beat on the west side On the east side Southeastern loaded down with six All City men and practically the same lineup that won the City Championship last year was cons1dered a sure winner Next year Coach Red Higgins will have to start from scratch as nearly the whole team will have gradu ated Catcher Iohnny Bayliff pitcher Paul Temple Oran Williams Vaughn Solakian and Nick Stepanian will form the nucleus of his team , . , , c 'l . , - I I I- J - 1 ,I , ' , - I A - c L - .
