I SWIM TEAM Westerns rookie swim teani. although not in the class of previous swim squads. inanwged to take fourth place in the City Finals. This was due primarily to the fine coaching of Wilbur Gunnerson, swim team mentor for the past years, who consecutively, year in year out, has presented superior teams. This year, paced by long distance water greyhounds Bob Simkus, Ron Alsobrooks, Frank Himsons, and Gordon McClellan, speed demons. Ted Gross, Joe Sim- kus, Harry Ackerman. and divers Joe Simkus and Tony Bango, the tankers won five dual meets, losing only to the powerful Cooley and Northwestern squads. In diving, the Cowboys were ably represented when Joe Simkus took second in the finals while Bango placed fourth. Experience combined with youth in the form of George McClellan and Frank Hanson, gave the Cowboy tankers many individual points throughout the year in the Medley. Page Twenty Sophomore Ron Alsobrooks, swimming the 100-yard breast stroke, was adged out by Bandyk, all-city for the second year, in the finals. The other half of the Tank Twins, Bob Simkus, excels in the 100-yard back stroke, placing second in the city meet, thus becoming an all-city man along side of brother Joe, Ron Alsobrooks, and Frank Han- son. Joe and Bob, with still a year to go, this season accumulated the grand total of 118 points. Too much credit can not be given to the fine work of Coach Wilbur Gunnerson whose inspiration and knowhow has carried Western to City Championships, This year Coach Gunnerson had to be content with laying the groundwork of next year's team since he had practically no veterans and should be able to pre- sent in '46 a team that will be long remembered in the annals of West, ern's swimming history. Ken Gunderson. Bill Murray, Coach Lawson, Bob Jones and Charles Webb. Westerns now departed coach, genial red-haired Thomas Lawson, piloted a green team of two milers into West Side top five. Park, and Miller, and losing to but one, Redford, these thin- elads would easily have won a medal for the fight and spirit which they displayed througout the season. Wayne Betz Neil McLean, William Murray, Gaylon Jack- son, Jack Long and Robert Jones are the lads who were awarded letters in this Marathon. Under bleak gray sky these hard running boys from Western raced for the West Side Championship at Palmer Park, In perhaps the most gruelling of races the Cowboys managed to take fifth place, losing to Cooley, City Champions, ,533 Northwestern, second place. title holde1's, and Mackenzie, third in the city meet. Since the first three city places were captured by West Side Schools. this shows that the Red and White competed against the city's toughest competition. Wayne Betz. the only track letter winner on the squad, was unanimously elected captain by his fellow teammates. Incidentally Betz was one ot' the boys who was with Floyd Rogers, Richard HoI'l'man. and Alex Drabkowski when they captured the two mile Wayne Relay cup for Western High School for the tirst time, Although these true-blue runners didn't have many root- crs cheering them on to victory, they still managed to give a sterling performance throughout the season. showing the new coach an example ot' the never'say-die Western Spirit.
