if We Salute . . . Western Heights High School offers the following tribute to Roger Barnes and Jerry Johnson who were killed in the Vietnamese War. They will be remem bered because of the contribution they made to West ern Heights and because of the many friends who at- tended school with them. We pay special tribute to their service in the in- terest of national defense. They paid the supreme sacrifice in order that we may continue to enjoy the blessings and opportunities found in the United States Roger Barnes was the first Western Heights graduate to be listed as killed in the Vietnamese War. Roger was a member of the 1966 graduating class. The Barnes family first moved into our school district in April, 1966. Mr. Barnes was sent here from Orlando, Florida, to attend school at FAA. Roger, being a senior, received his di- ploma in May of 1966. The family returned this September and enrolled their children in our school again. His mother indicated that they were well pleased with our school system and that Roger was proud to have graduated from Westem Heights. Roger was a volunteer in the U. S. Marine Corps and was serving as a member of the Green Beret. He had just been sent overseas. The family received word October 28 that Roger had been killed in action, and returned to Florida. Jerry Johnson was the second gold star that was added to the West- ern Heights honor roll of soldiers killed in action in the Vietnam con- flict. Jerry, the son of Mrs. Ilene Johnson and the late Robert A. John- son, was a graduate of the class of '66, He was killed in a land mine explosion only five days after his arrival in Vietnam. He was a good guy, expressed his many friends. He is remem- bered well by students and teachers. Mrs. Elizabeth Bandy, senior class advisor, will never forget his part in the 1966 Senior Play. The part of grandfather in Tammy Tell Me True , came to life under his skillful characterization. You could look in Jerry's eyes and see a sparkle of honesty , com- mented Keith Stone, Jerry's history teacher. Jerry will long be remem- bered for his air of pleasantness and sincere willingness to learn.
