Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1974 volume:

.. . Thinking Is The Best Way To Travel 3 We should treat our minds as innocent ingenious children whose guardians we are . . . Thoughts are bricks With which character is built Character is not born It is formed Man's thoughts Are the architects Of his circumstances. 7 Wll YARDS To know what we knowest not, is in a sense omniscience. There is a path our minds can follow Come on an amazing journey And learn all you should know. Through the years that make up our high school experience we come in contact with1many people and ideas, some of which we accept and make a part of ourselves and some we choose to disregard There are special people who have a profound effect upon us as we stumble over the obstacles in our paths He has been there, at the right place, at the right time, to guide us and help-us find a direction. He has been more than a teacher, he has been a friend, whose reach exceeded the confines of the classroom He has been a speaker, but more important, he has been a listener. His positive encouragement inspired our creativ itv and his pleasant easv-going manner reassured us in times ot conflict It is not possible to measure the time, energy and thought he has given us through all his efforts As a profes- sional. his reward exists in our desire to continue to build upon the w isdom and good sense he has shared w ith tls As a man. it w ill come in know ing lie has touched us h these thoughts, that we dedicate our yearbook to you. Vocational Training and experience The New School This alternative to spending one s senior year in the high school is now in its second year of existence. In the New School, a student has the opportunity to shape his education because there are many ways of earning credits in traditional subjects. Geri listens in on a good 'rap ”; There are times for interaction and times for independence. Mr. Tony Moreno Another refreshing aspect of the school is that the I am teacher — you are pupil relationship is dissolved and replaced by the we learn from each other” attitude. Mr. Ernie Dailey Miss Marilyn Silverman Fhe discussions often last after class is over. This is the place. 34 The topics may vary Often times the most valuable learning experiences do not occur in a conventional classroom. The New School is a program with few re- strictions; it encourages involvement in the community and studies initiated independently. The New School has proven to be a productive and enriching experi- ence for all involved. Black Student Union — Power through unity First: M Merrell (sgt at arms). V Phillips (treas. ). D. The Westbury football team finished the season with a 3-5 record but this is not a true indication of the team's talent. Four of the five Dragon losses were decided by no more than a touchdown. The Green and Gold did boast one of the finest de- fensive units in Nassau County; led by All-Confer- ence II linebackers, Jeff Arnel and Al Stevens. Oth- er members of this outstanding defensive unit which only allowed 92 points in eight games were Jay Miles, Scott Arnel, and John Nitti. Hopefully Westbury will once again produce a winning team next year led by returning players Don Proniewych, Scott Arnel, Les Sacani, Bob Dun- lap, and Ed Carter. Even though this year’s cross country team failed to produce a winning record. Coach Phil Gully did have one thing to be happy about. Co-cap- tain Gary Russell was selected to the All-Divi- sion squad, the first time a Green Dragon had accomplished this since 1963; as well as being picked the team's MVP. Other runners who per- formed admirably this past year were Pete Mc- Anulty, Mike Clement, and Clyde Dillard. At the outset of the season, the Green and Gold booters had desire, if nothing else. They lacked the depth of previous years yet they wanted to win and they proved they could do it on the field. Their 11-6-1 record is not a fair representation because early in the season they committed many mental errors that led to losses. As the season progressed they played more cohesive- ly and wound up with a fourth place finish and a third consecutive playoff berth In the North Shore Tournament, they lasted two rounds, beating Levittown Division before bowing to Garden City. Post season honors went to Robert Henenlot- ter (All-County) and Jean Leguerre (All-North Shore) for their outstanding play. The young squad will lose only three seniors due to gradua- tion so a division championship is a distinct possibility next year. Coach Mike Fiedler’s squad was led by Sophomore Jeff Rudes who com- piled a 10-2 record which earned him a position on the All-North Shore team and Craig Padover who wrapped up his varsity career by being selected All-Division. After a disappointing start in which the team lost five of the first six games. Coach Krinsky's men regrouped to finish second in the Division and fourth in the county. Following the poor start, Coach Krinsky found the combination that was to make Westbury a winner for the rest of the year. Behind the front line of Fred Davis, Guy Willett and Tommy Smith along with Stanley Bull and Ernest Fisher in the backcourt the Dragons won eight of their next ten ballgames. In one of their finest performances of the season, the Green and Gold moved into a first place tie with Roslyn as they defeated Roslyn 61-46. The Dragons lost their chance for a Divisional championship when they lost to Great Neck North 54-53 in overtime in the final game of the season. The playoffs followed and despite a poor performance the Dragons rallied from a 12 point deficit to defeat Island Trees in the post season opener. The highlight of the season occured in the next round when the Drag- ons played well enough to upset the Number One team in the County, Farmingdale, by a 68-63 count. In the North shore semi-finals the team turned in a sub-par performance but their poise enabled them to beat Port Washington 58-57 and thereby earned the right to face Roslyn for the North Shore Championship. In the North Shore final, the Dragons lost a nine point lead with 6:40 to go and went on to lose in overtime 56- 55. Two days later they closed out the season when they lost the consolation game to Freeport 74-60 to capture fourth place in the County. Four Dragons received post-season honors with Fred Davis and Guy Willett being named to the All-Nassau County Tournament Team. Tom Smith became an All-Division selection and was joined by Captain Stanley Bull. In addition. Bull was named to the All-North Shore squad for the second straight year. In spite of the teams' 4-6 record, five of our wrestlers earned their way in to post-season tournaments. Allan Stevens compiled a 7-3 league record and fin- ished second in the Divisional tournament. Jeff Arnel with a slate of 8-2 placed second in the divisional and fourth in the North Shore. Don Proniewych went un- defeated in league competition and won second place in the Division and North Shore. Scott Arnel went undefeated during the season and finished with a 9-0-1 league record. Scott was the only Dragon to earn a di- visional championship. Overall he finished his junior year of wrestling with a record of 18-2-1 in the 134 pound weight class. The most improved wrestler on the squad was Lin- wood Miner. After a slow start, he came on strong dur- ing the second half of the season and finished second in the division tournament. Coaches: Mr Shep Messing and Mr. Carmine Marano 78 Coach Messing prepares to start the match. The Arnel Brothers tangle away from home. Is this legal? Although the team was small and wins were hard to come by, they never lost their enthusiasm and a number of accomplishments can be seen. Billy Fontana has come within one second of breaking the school record in the 100 yard backstroke and Eugene Gorman came within one second of the 50 yard freestyle record set in 1969. This years team was young and preparations are in the works toward building West- bury as a powerhouse in swim- ming. Led by their energetic coach, Peter Lowenberg, it would appear a certainty that they will be able to fulfill this arduous task. At times, they played like champi- ons; showing their full potential while at other times they lacked the enthusiasm needed for a championship ball club. Excellent perform- ances were consistently turned in by All- County Pitcher Tom Campbell and All- League Infielder Frank Franzese. There are also gardens where our flowers will grow and flourish . . . Because we have watered them in earnest. Things are just too groovy!! Once she gets a glimpse of my MAGNIFICENCE — she’s mine.
