But as it was happening, we didn ' t notice — we hurried so and lost the httle things somewhere inside the big. Funny, isn ' t it — how the single moment and the individual person don ' t mean so much till you leave them and look back. The year began excited. Enrollment had risen. The gym was rising. Administrators bustled, groundsmen hustled. Saga braced, bannercarriers rehearsed and everyone talked about the coming inauguration of President John D. Rocke- feller IV. Every person who walked the campus, however he tuned his thoughts and whatever he chose not to hear, could feel the spirit of Wesleyan ' 73 and could hear the exultant singing of the Presidential Search Committee, who had known all along of that bull ' s-eye at their belts. And deep down in our hearts we all knew that it would be a year of beginnings, a year of new faces, a year of hellos. At the beginning, the car emptied and my room full and bulging, I walked the campus before unpacking. Faces that knew mine — and faces that didn ' t — said hello. And smiled. And I did too, to faces I knew and faces I didn ' t. And as the year grew, more and more of us came to know one another — if only through those hellos. With Jay came many new faces — faces of change and of growth. Some of them — the Richardsons, Sandra Lypinsky, Sharon — stayed and grew with us. Others — JDR 3rd and Senator Charles Percy — shared their hellos and their hopes for us and left us taller because of their sharing. It was a year peopled by faces. There were the faces of the tour choir, singing for inauguration, singing throughout West Virginia, singing for the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, singing in Florida, in Maryland, in D.C. and in Buckhannon for people like me at W.V.W.C. And there were the faces of the Jazz Ensemble playing in Romania in the summer, playing for inauguration, playing in Charleston, playing at the Marshall Jazz Festi- val, for the Clarksburg Arts and Humanities Council and in Buckhannon for people like me at W.V.W.C. They were faces making music, representing Wesleyan here, there, and everywhere and other places too, faces making time to give. It was a year peopled by faces, and it was more. Among seas of faces we can easily forget that every face is a person. This year we learned that we are a community only because each of us is a single person — each an individual. It was a year of seeing the people behind the faces. One person behind a smiling face who touched us all was Kass Sworden. A giving person, Kass served with her hus- 142 band Frank as head resident of McCuskey Hall and volunteered as well to coach the superb women ' s swimming team (73 state champs), which without her might have folded this year. Her death, which came in a giving moment, while the team was enroute to a meet at Marshall, reminded us of how a single moment changes things. The others injured in the two-car collision — swim-team members Janet Smith, Karen Boyd, Marianne Bookmyer, and Laurie Eccleston — learned with me, with all of us, from Kass. For she reminded us of how a single person changes things more than any dying moment can. For Kass changed us. Always there were changes — all with people behind them, though sometimes the people were hard to identify. There were those who changed the drinking policy and permitted beer in the dorms. Some of us celebrated, some of us com- plained, some of us didn ' t care. As usual. There were those who restored the Annex. There were those who allowed senior women to live off campus. There were those who extended visitation hours. There were those who admitted SPIRG and closed Wesleyan ' s doors to ROTC. And always some of us celebrated, some of us complained, and some of us didn ' t care. And, as usual, all of us somehow changed as we reacted. There were changes we all took part in. The gym grew with our help. We had gone fund-raising. We had campaigned. We had bought the bleachers. And this year we saw the fruit of our labors, the new physical education plant, a silent promise looking upon the campus. Enrollment also grew with our help. New spirit, new president, and a new recruiting program together helped the numbers rise. And in January Wesleyan marched onward, its first time up a new path, as the number of freshman applications reached an all-time high. And most of us celebrated, for we had helped. Free Term, like most changes, changed us too, as we enjoyed firsts in the curriculum, such as Ideas of Love, The Mind ' s Eye, Appalachian Studies. Some of us were bored. Some of us were stimulated. Some of us were challenged. Some of us were swamped. And all of us, including coordinator Dr. John Monoski, celebrated Wesleyan ' s Bacchanalian Academic and Social Happening with class exhibits and presentations and with song and dance, bashing through the end of our Free Term first. And there were other firsts in this year of beginnings. Firsts always with people behind them, people like you and me. People like Matt Foreman, the first male at Wesleyan to rush a sorority, only, alas, to be rejected. People like Sue Grove, a Wesleyan woman elected Community Council President for ' 74-75. People like Monte Geuther, Allan McLaughlin. Ed Collins, and Bob Astolfi. first men to live in Jenkins dorm, getting accustomed to seeing girls in curlers. 143 And like Phil Foli, a ' 73 graduate, director of the Upshur County Day Care Center, the first of its kind in the county. Like Mark Washburn and his Pharos staff, earning Wesleyan ' s first first-class ratings among college newspapers nation- wide. And there were people behind firsts in sports. People like Greg Hendrickson, Runner of the Year in the WVIAC, and Ron Steel, eighth in NAIA scoring in soccer, and Obert Makuwatsine and Kurt Molins, Soccer All-Conference. Like national swimmers Skip Morris, Dennis Davis, Dave Berthold, Art Morris, and Bill Gullborg. Like Jeff Massey, All-Con- ference Football, who broke the school record for pass interceptions. And people like Bob McKee and Spaul King, All- Conference in basketball. And there were faces we looked at twice, smiling. Like Rhonda Holyfield, Homecoming Queen, and Lynn Waddell, Murmurmontis Queen, and Paula Hess, Spring Sing Queen. Faces we looked at twice, wondering. Like Paula Grossman, transsexual, and Dick Gregory, comedian turned prophet. Faces we looked at twice, applauding. Like Debbie Willard and Ted Anderson, Wesley Ann and Andy. And there were faces that streaked by us one school night, some of us smiling, some frowning, some wondering, some applauding, most looking twice, and a few not looking at all. And all of us were changed by the firsts, by the faces, by the changes we made. Wesleyan ' s first Arts and Crafts Fair, headed by Richard Cogley and displaying Wesleyan handicrafts and artwork, changed us. So did our trips to Jessies, our first pizza-place. So did proposals to kill the Pharos and proposals to end sex-discrimination among campus organiza- tions. So did the growth of Greeks. The year changed us as we changed it. And as it happened we didn ' t know. But we learned, you and I, that we are important. We learned, from Jay and from commencement speaker Cyrus Vance, that a community consists of people, individuals behind the faces. We learned that Wesleyan is you and I. And we changed in the learning. At the end, my room emptied, the dorms emptying, and the car full and bulging, I walked the campus before leaving. Faces that knew mine — and faces that didn ' t — said goodbye. And smiled, sometimes through tears. And I did too, to faces I knew and faces I didn ' t. There was a goodness in this, a realization that all of us were single people bound by the single moment, bound up in beginnings and endings and hellos and goodbyes. And I walked away knowing that things had changed, knowing that a goodness would go with me and would stay behind. thb rocerv frices HitKecor fcAgnew d His © c« risis The ■.t Co -v ; Gaso ii Requesr Water gat ,nw from t pit « ' ' '  I IrrMtli ' mial ' irdrr that .riUori r -siKiM ' «l • !
