Dave Reemsnyder took over the reins and guided the Bobcat eleven to one victory in 5 starts. One victory was more than the dopsters had expected to come from this team of youngsters. Herb Leffard and Ron Faust were the only seniors on the team, so it looks like better times are to come. Herb, the only player left from 1950 team was elected captain. This year marked the first time that the girls were awarded sweaters for their efforts on the hockey field. They are looking forward to another good season next year, because they are only losing two seniors. Joyce Pustinger, and this year ' s captain, Bobbie Collins were graduated in the Spring. Coach Hank Ellis and his Bobcat basketball team had a rough time getting started, losing the first five contests. After this start, they spent all season trying to even up the record, but ended up with an 8-18 record. The record doesn ' t tell the complete story though, because nine of the losses were suffered by seven or fewer points. Two of the biggest games of the season were the 84-81 victory over VMI and the 102-91 victory over Morris Harvey on their home court. Ed Hood, Harp O ' Toole, and Tommy Rutherford led the Bobcats in scoring. Hood broke all of the single season scoring records by tallying 574 points. OToole had 392 and Rutherford garnered 375. Again the record cannot tell the whole story, because four of the losses were by a one run margin and two others were decided by two tallies. The Bobcats also were extended into extra innings five times during the season. LeRoy Jones and Elmer Houdashelt paced the Ellismen in the pitching department. Jones recorded 4 of the victories while compiling a very creditable 2.25 earned run average. Houdashelt accounted for the other 3 wins and had an ERA of 2.61. Houdashelt also sparked the team at bat with a .452 average.
