Now that our work is completed, we present it to you, Wesleyan students and friends. We recognize that this book may have shortcomings, but we have tried to offer a fair informal portrayal of student life on our campus. Regardless of whether this yearbook pleases or displeases you, let your judgment be impartial! We trust that your copy of the 1939 MUKMURMONTIS will prove to hold many treasured memories. THE STAFF. DR. . I C HO LAS IIYMA .IT Ills DESK CAUGHT I. ACTION niTH CAROL AW HYMES • ' TO KXOIJ- II I M IS TO LOFE HIM ' ' Students are happy to find someone who holds deep interest in them as individuals and develops a lasting friendship with them both in academic and social fields. Wesleyan Col- lege students have found such a personality in Dr. Nicholas Hyma. This, in itself, is reas- on enough that we honor him in the 1939 Murmurmontis. His excellent school spirit, his willingness to cooperate, his intense interest both in Wesleyan and her student body have made Prof. Nick Hyma our beloved friend. With high regard for this friendship, we, the 1939 Murmurmontis staff dedicate our humble work to Dr. Nicholas Hyma. IN MEMORIAM Opal Catherine Westfall Robert John Stodd George Burton Skidmore 10 THE ADMIMSTRATIOX BUILDING IS flEUED FROM AN ANGLE 11 PRESIDENT ROY McCUSKEY, D. D. ROY McCUSKEY In November 1901 Roy McCuskey enrolled in West Virginia Conference Seminary (now West Virginia Wesleyan College) where he was graduated in 1905. He later returned to Wesleyan and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1908. Three years later he was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology by Boston University School of Theology. In 1921 he became a member of the Board of Trustees of West Virginia Wesleyan Col- lege and the next year was granted the honorary degree of Doctor of Divin- ity by his alma mater. In June 1931 he was elected to the presidency of this college. Here he helped to organize the Epworth League Institute and has been identified with it ever since. This spring he is completing his eighth year of capable leadership of the college. 12 PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE The staff of the 1939 Murmurmontis is presenting to the students and friends of West Virginia Wesleyan College a beautiful and well-arranged yearbook. The administration and faculty have given encouragement to this worthy student enterprise for the double reason that it furnishes oppor- tunity for expression of student talent and ability, as well as good publicity for the college. Students of earlier years at West Virginia Wesleyan College find gen- uine delight in refreshing their memories of those golden days of their youth by looking over the records contained in past Murmurmontis editions. In like manner will the present body of students find enjoyment in future years as they turn the pages of this book. I trust that all those into whose hands the 1939 Murmurmontis may come will thoroughly appreciate the excellent work of the staff. ROY McCUSKEY. Ross, head coach and director of athletics, and Dave Reemsnyder, assistant coach and director of physical education, comprise the coaching staff of Wesleyan. Both Ross and Reemsnyder are former football stars on great Bobcat elevens of the past, and each has done much to put Wesleyan on the sporting map. Coach Ross, who is generally known as Cebe around Buckhannon and elsewhere, is one of the most successful small-college coaches in the nation. Rewarded with honorable mention to Ail-American after four years of half- backing at Wesleyan, Ross assumed the role of coach at the local institution two years after graduation and has since concluded fourteen seasons as skip- per of the Bobcat crew. Reemsnyder, after turning in four years of regular duty at tackle under Ross, returned to help his former tutor after several years of coaching in southern West Virginia high schools. Playing on the great teams that beat New York U. and the Navy, Reemsnyder was declared by several coaches to be one of the best tackles in the East. Although forced to undergo a complete rebuilding program, Ross and Reemsnyder seem quite capable of putting another typical Wesleyan eleven on the field next year. 52 FOOTBALL SEASON 1938 The 1938 Wesleyan football team bettered the record of the previous season by winning three out of eight contests. Following a disappointing 25-0 upset at the hands of Morris-Harvey and a 38-6 drubbing by the Bob- cats ' ancient rival, West Virginia U., the Rossmen pulled themselves out of their doldrums and kept on par with their rivals until the final game when St. Vincent rolled the ' Cats 27-0. Highlights of the season were the Home- coming Day victory over Waynesburg and the 13-0 victory over Salem a week later. Despite the none-too-good team record, several Wesleyan players were accorded noteworthy honors. Kenny Moore, Bobcat center, made the All- West Virginia Conference first eleven, and Moon Mullen and Eddie Meig- han were honored on the second and third teams. Kurlinski, Ciccone, and Gatskie were rated honorable mention. Eddie Kosko was named by Red Grange as one of the outstanding ends in the tri-state area. A nine-game schedule has been arranged for next year which includes West Virginia, Morris-Harvey, Catholic U., Davis-Elkins, Salem, Long Island U., St. Vincent, Marshall, and Waynesburg. The only change in the schedule finds Long Island U. replacing Duquesne. ■NEMO THURMAN PAUL GATSKIE DON GATEWOOD CHARLEY GRUVEE KENNY MOORE 53 BILL JONES EDDIE KOSKO GEORGE SNYDER PETE KURLINSKI JACK MOORE MORRIS-HARVEY 25 — WESLEYAN In the opening game of the football season an alert Morris-Harvey eleven capitalized on two blocked punts and a ragged pass defense to trounce the Bobcats 25-0 at Buckhannon on September 24. The Bobcats proved su- perior in ground-gaining, 128 yards to 90, and also in first downs, 10 to 6, but the Eagles turned their breaks into scores and won the game by a wide margin. Wesleyan threatened several times and once reached the Morris-Harvey 3-yard line, but the Eagles ' line held. Mace supplied the other two scores when his passes fell into waiting arms across the goal line. Kenny Moore, center, and Eddie Kosko, end, were outstanding for Wesleyan, while Jim Cain did most of the ground gaining. WEST VIRGINIA 38 — WESLEYAN 6 The Mountaineer jinx over Wesleyan teams continued this year as the West Virginia team rolled over the Rossmen 28-6. The Mountain Men scored in the very first minute of play when Harry Clark dashed 72 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game. The Mountaineers counted tallies in every period and had a decided edge all the way in the contest played at Morgantown, October 1. The Bobcats ' ray of hope rested on the passing arm of Allen Red Mackey, and the ' Cats took to the air early in the game. The lone Meth- odist tally came when Jack Moore made a neat running catch of Mackey ' s 28-yavd pass over the goal-line. Kenny Moore was the outstanding de- fensive star for the Bobcats. 54 DAVIS-ELKINS 5 -WESLEY AN 6 The first Wesleyan victory came in the third game of the season when the Bobcats registered a 6-5 victory over Davis-EIkins college at Elkins on October 8 before a crowd of Forest Festival fans. A 20-yard pass from Mackey to Clark Thurman in the dying minutes of the game gave the Meth- odists the hard-fought battle. The Davis-Elkins Senators scored in the third quarter when Federo- vitch, D.-E. tackle, blocked Moon Mullen ' s punt and recovered across the goal line for a safety to give his team a 2-0 advantage. The Senators added three points more when Kniley booted a field goal from the 15-yard stripe. Wesleyan threatened several times but failed to score until the final minutes of the contest. DUQUESNE 13 WESLEYAN A disastrous second quarter, in which the Dukes scored all of their 13 points, sent a fighting Bobcat team down to defeat at the hands of the high- powered Duquesne Night Riders on a fog-shrouded Forbes Field gridiron at Pittsburgh on October 15. In the first quarter, with Jim Cain carrying the ball, the Methodists drove deep into Duquesne territory only to lose the ball on downs. The Dukes tallied two touchdowns in the second quarter when Donelli and Onder made long runs for scores. In the last quarter the ' Cats bid strong to score and were on the Dukes ' 5-yard line as the final whistle blew. Don Gatewood, senior center, was the outstanding performer for the Wesleyan Methodists. DAVE TENNANT BILL CICCONE MIKE CUTNEY BILL WILSON CLYDE STEWART 55 DEL WALKER GEORGE GRUBB CARL WEBER SAM GWOSDEN JOE ANDRICK CATHOLIC U. 21 Wesleyan Catholic University ' s Flying Cardinals had a little too much power for the injury ridden Bobcats and steamrollered to a 21-0 victory over the Wes- leyan eleven in Washington, October 22. The Washingtonians scored in each of the first three quarters with sophomore Henry Sant ' Ambrogio leading the touchdown parade. Vidnovic passed to Sant ' Ambrogio for the first quarter touchdown and then went over his own left guard for the tally in the second period. Sant Ambrogio ' s 42-yard touchdown gallop was the feature of the third and final C. U. score. Wesleyan ' s Eddie Meighan provided the thrill of the day when he heaved a 55-yard pass to Thurman to put the Bobcats in scoring territory. At this point, though, the Cardinal defense tightened and Wesleyan failed to score. Mullen ' s punting, Meighan ' s passing, and the line play of Ciccone, Kurlinski and Kenny Moore stood out for Wesleyan. WAYNESBURG 6— WESLEYAN 7 The Bobcats gained their second victory by downing the invading Waynesburg Yellowjackets, 7-6, before a Homecoming Day crowd, October 29. Eddie Kosko, alert wingman, provided the winning margin as he scooped up a blocked placement kick and raced across the goal after Weber had ripped off tackle for a touchdown. The Methodists were superior in every division of the game, despite the narrow margin of triumph. They outgained the ' Jackets, 145 yards to 63, and outclassed the visitors in passing. Wesleyan ' s score came in the first quarter, and the Waynesburg tally came in the second period. Pete Kur- linski was the standout in a vastly improved Wesleyan forward wall. 56 SALEM 0— WESLEY AN 13 The Wesleyan gridmen showed their mettle at opportune times and sent the Salem Tigers back to Salem with a 13-0 setback to their record. The Methodist team chalked up tallies in the first and second quarters and then took things a bit easier in the last half. Ed Meighan scored the first touchdown after reverses and power plays had put the Bobcats in scoring position. Del Walker added the extra point. The other score came as a result of Meighan ' s 45-yard toss to diminutive George Grubb. Last-half Salem rallies tailed to net a score and the contest ended 13-0. In this game Jack Moore suffered a broken collar-bone, Char- ley Gruver, a couple of cracked ribs, Kosko, a hip injury, and Sam Gwosden, an injured leg. ST. VINCENT 27 WESLEYAN Three touchdowns against a badly battered and worn out Wesleyan eleven in the last quarter gave St. Vincent college of Latrobe, Pa., a 27-0 Armistice Day victory over the Bobcats in the final contest of the season for the Rcssmen. The Methodist team outplayed and outgained the Saints during the first half, but could not stand the pace as the game wore on to a close. Halfback Baran ran wild for the Pennsylvanians, scoring two touch- downs on long runs and Fullback Seni also carried a share of the Bearcats ' ball carrying. Meighan and Mullen bore the brunt of the Bobcat attack. ADDIE McKOWN JIM CAIN EDDIE MEIGHAN MOON MULLEN RED MACKEY ' tCe Sc , TW ' 57 T t■ ' . :-, l L , N- rfURO. At the start the Bobcats appeared to have a combination that would put Wesleyan back on the sporting map. but in the second game Jack Moore, brilliant sophomore floorman, sustained a broken collar bone, that dashed Wesleyan ' s hopes. Despite injuries and jinxes the Bobcats won five games, taking the scalps of Waynesburg, Davis-Elkins, Fairmont, Salem, and Bethany. The Methodist quintet narrowly missed taking the measure of Glenville ' s state championship five in an overtime game. Two field goals would have given Wesleyan victory. A second victory over Davis-Elkins was missed by one field goal and one over Salem by three points. The victory over a Waynesburg team that lost only to Carnegie Tech, Duquesne and Wesleyan, proved to be the high spot of the season. The ' Cats came from behind and won the game in the last two minutes when Paul Vandervoort scored two fouls. In another thrilling contest, the Methodists bowed to Marshall 43-39 after they had kept pace with the Thundering Herd until the final minutes. The five games in the win column do not give a true picture of the basket- ball talent of a potentially great quintet. The complete record for the year is: Wesleyan 29 — West Virginia 43 Wesleyan 46 — Waynesburg 44 Wesleyan 53 — Alderson-Broaddus 67 Wesleyan 35 — West Virginia 46 Wesleyan 39— Marshall 43 Wesleyan 61 — Davis-Elkins 62 Wesleyan 45 — Fairmont 52 Wesleyan 49 — Glenville 51 Wesleyan 54 — Davis-Elkins 43 Wesleyan 36 — Morris-Harvey 46 Wesleyan 44 — Salem 46 Wesleyan 51 — Bethany ' 57 Wesleyan 26 — Waynesburg 61 Wesleyan 48 — Fairmont 47 Wesleyan 46 — Alderson-Broaddus 59 Wesleyan 56— Glenville 70 Wesleyan 52— Salem 42 Wesleyan 38— Marshall 54 Wesleyan 43 — Morris-Harvey 55 Wesleyan 60— Bethany 42 60 JIM ELLIS POUNDS OUT SPORTS XEJVS RELEASE Jim Ellis, our sports publicity writer, is an important cog in the Wes- leyan athletic machine. Although he seldom gets the pats on the back he deserves, he carries out his task to perfection. His is the job of putting the Bobcats in the limelight whether they win, lose, or draw. Take a bow, Jim, for a job well done. JIESLEYAN CHEERLEADERS LINE UP FOR CAMERAMAN Always on hand to give the Bobcats encouragement are our five cheer- leaders — Charles White, Martha Jean Martin, John Law, Lucille Munson. and John Hassler. By leading cheers they show Wesleyan athletic teams that the student body is one hundred per cent behind them. They have an outstanding part in each Wesleyan victory. 61 GIRLS ' INTRAMURALS The girls pictured on this page form the combined teams of hockey, volleyball, and basketball. 1939 CHAMPS Hockey: Juniors.
