For Reference NOT TO BE TAKEN FROM THIS ROOM MURMURMONTIS 1938 TO STUDENTS AND FRIENDS OF WESLEYAN: The 1937 Murmurmontis was so splendidly done and met with such favor among the students that the success of the present edition seemed assured. A worthy student project deserves the enthusiastic support of all friends of youth. It is only by activity that initiative and skill can be developed. The members of the editorial staff are to be commended for the care and faithfulness which has characterized their work, as well as for the artistry of the production. While it is only a partial record, nevertheless it furnishes a fair picture of student life. ROY McCUSKEY. President. J. .? 3f MURMURMONTIS 1938 PRESIDENT ROY McCVSKEY A.B., S.T.B., D.D. MURMURMDNTIS 1938 Sophomores and Freshmen MURMURMONTIS 1938 The Progressive Class of ' 40 s HE Sophomore Class of this year has become known as the famous Progressive Class. In 1940 West Virginia Wesleyan College will celebrate the fiftieth year of service to the world. We wish to extend congratulations to this group for we believe they will make an outstanding contribution to the College. THE CLASS OFFICERS ARE: President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Social Chairman Gabriel V. Uhlar William Vering Mildred Wharton Bill Kiddy- Ruth Gerwig MURMURMONTIS 1938 Babes In The Woods |ES, you were Babes in the Woods just a few months ago, but I no more can you be called that . . . every one of you have 5siL£3 started on the upper road. Time flies and now you may be called Sophomores . . . never again will you be a Freshman. Congratulations kids! THE CLASS OFFICERS ARE: President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Bert Hall John Hubner Dorothy Poster William Whiffin •3 MURMURMONTIS 1938 Athletics MURMURMQNTIS i- 3 . 1938 CEBE ROSS Our Mentor yCTlHIRTEEN golden years of service as director of the athletic destinies of ) Wesleyan College is the fine record claimed by our popular mentor, Cecil JTTS5 i: m Ross, better known in sporting circles and on the campus as ™ (Vbe . Heralded as perhaps the greatest small-college coach in the country, he has succeeded in raising Wesleyan to the high position she now holds in the national spotlight. Teams coached by Ross are respected and feared by college coaches and players throughout the East, and well is that so, for fighting Bobcats have downed such outstanding teams as those of Syracuse, Duquesne, and the Navy, only to mention a few. Many athletes whose names appear daily in newspapers throughout the country received the major portion of their training under his watchful eye. Almost every other year he is forced to undergo a rebuilding program, when he sees the boys he has developed and trained pass out of the college halls and into life to win renown for themselves. But every season he puts forth an eleven that Wesleyanites are proud to claim as their own. Ross himself was a star in his own right. After four years of spectacular halfbacking at Buckhannon High, he picked up the trail to fame at Wesleyan, where he starred for four years. As a climax to his brilliant career he was accorded honorable mention to All-America, an honor which few small-college athletes attain. Coach Ross has given football in this sector much of the popular appeal it now has, and, incidentally, has given Wesleyan added prestige. It would indeed be hard to imagine a Wesleyan College without including her own Cebe Ross. MURMURMONTIS 1938 Cheerleaders Let ' s give a hand to the cheerleaders now! They have faithfully been to every game of the season, full of spirit and always encourag- ing good sportsmanship. They have aided greatly in sending the Fighting Bobcats to their victory. Jim Ellis, Director of Publicity, Department of Athletics Thank you, Jim, for your good work. The Bobcats do the fighting, but it is Jim that makes it known. He goes before them into the sporting world as a herald of the coming victory. JOHN LAW EUGENE BAILEY JOHN HALL MARTHA JEAN MARTIN LUCILLE MUNSON JIM ELLIS MURMURMONTIS 1938 Of ! nP - r The Wesleyan Bobcats MURMURMONTIS 1938 Football Season, 1937 w ITH the injury jinx hovering constantly about the Bobcats, the bright prospects of early September faded out of the picture as the season progressed. A potentially great team, riddled by injuries of all sorts, went down fighting before seven of the nine foes they faced. No credit due the team must be taken from it. for in every case but one the Bobcats battled on even terms and in most cases the margin of defeat was very slight. It must here be stated that the starting lineup for Wesleyan was the same on no two occasions. Hopes ran high for a victory over our oldest rivals — the West Virginia Mountaineers, for the contest was brought to Buckhannon for the first time in history. But before an overflow crowd of 7,000 the ' Cats went down gamely 14-0, when the heavier Mountain Men, who made little headway through our line, took to the air to score both touchdowns. In this game our star quarter- back, Jack LaBay, was put on the shelf by a severe knee injury for the most of the season. Then came the discouraging 39-0 defeat administered by the high-powered Duquesne Night Riders under the lights at Forbes Field, Pittsburgh. The Dukes were in rare form that night and probably could have licked any team in the country had they played them on that date. This was the only game in which the Rossmen were noticeably outplayed. The ' Cats then narrowly missed the margin of a win over the touted George Washington U. Cardinals, 18-13 in a contest at Washington. A week later they dropped a disheartening 7-0 decision to Davis-Elkins college after playing on the Senators ' goal-line all afternoon. Then followed the scoreless tie with St. Vincent on a sloppy gridiron at Latrobe, Pa. It was in this contest that six of our regulars suffered severe burns from the lime on the wet field. These six were out of action for several weeks. Seriously crippled without the services of many regulars, the ' Cats were edged out by the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 7-0. Then came another dis- couraging loss when Wesleyan was beaten 21-0 by Catholic U., after playing them to a 0-0 standstill the first half. However, victory was not to be denied, for, with most of the injured men back in the lineup, the Bobcats came through with a glorious 7-0 triumph over Salem. The Orange and Black dominated the play at every stage of the fray. In the season ' s finale, the Wesleyan gridders went down into defeat, 27-0, after holding the Marshall attack in check for one half. Thus one of the leanest years in Wesleyan ' s history was brought to a close. ri MURMURMQNTIS 1938 MURMURMDNTIS 1938 Bobcats of 1937 PETE KCRLINSKI, tackle — Pete came to us with a splendid record at Ben- wood Union High, and has lived up to his name for three seasons. Next year he ' ll be back at a tackle position and his clever line play will doubt- less bring joy to the hearts of Wesleyan fans. WILLIAM CICCONE. guard— Willie made the first tackle of the season for the ' Cats and kept on starring in every game he played. He is a hard charger and a vicious tackier, so we ' re glad to have him with us again. JAMES CAMPBELL, guard — Big Jim rated the outstanding-sophomore checklist for the nation and came through in grand style. His offensive and defensive play leaves little to be desired and he has two big seasons left. VICTOR DEAN, guard — Vic deserves as much praise as any boy on the squad. Injuries followed him all fall, but he ' ll be one of the bulwarks of the line when Cebe ' s next edition of gridders comes ou t. MIKE BRANCHIK, tackle— Killer is another in the long list of stars that Akron (Ohio) Kenmore High has sent to us. He is big and rangy and was one of the most feared men in the Bobcat forward wall. We ' re sorry to lose him. MIKE CUTNEY, guard — Here ' s a boy who seems destined to play a leading role in the success of future Bobcat elevens. He proved his mettle this year and hard, fast charges and clean blocks featured Mike ' s play in every game in which he played. GEORGE MIKE, tackle— G. Mike received Little all-America rating last year and hangs up his cleats with an enviable record for his four years of regu- lar duty in orange and black livery. KENNETH MOORE, center — Kenny is generally regarded the best center in the state, and won an all-conference berth at that spot. A par excellence snapper back, he was a constant menace to the opposing backfields all season. A shoulder operation performed this spring should make him even better next September. PAUL COOL, fullback — Pete won the starting assignment at fullback for several games and turned in good accounts of himself on every occasion. He was particularly outstanding in the St. Vincent and Catholic U. games. MURMURMONTIS 1938 r MURMURMONTIS t 1938 Bobcats of 1937, Continued CARL WEBER, halfback— Buck is the Bobcat ' s powerhouse back and one of Wesleyan ' s most consistent ground-gainers. He is a smashing line plunger and in addition a dependable safety man. He ' ll be around Wesleyan again next fall. GEORGE GRUBB, halfback — George is the lightest man on the squad and incidentally the fastest. What he lacks in weight he makes up for in speed and elusiveness. Give him the ball and a little interference and he ' s off for a touchdown. We ' ll hear more from him next year. LEE COLEMAN, halfback — Brownie played inspired ball all season, both on the offense and defense. He was rated one of the best punters in the East by Washington scribes, his long boots frequently pulling his team out of a tough spot. STROMEDE MULLEN, fullback— Moon is the hardest driving back in the Bobcat lineup, but was hampered by injuries all season. A capable punter and sure tackier, Mullen is one of the most versatile performers on the Methodist eleven. Wesleyan fans are expecting big things of him in the future. ADDISON McKOWN. quarterback— Addy came into the spotlight when in- juries forced the star LaBay to the sidelines and won the acclaim of the Bobcat boosters with his brilliant blocking and backing up the line. He is being groomed as regular quarter next fall. JACK LaBAY, quarterback — Cast into the role of blocking quarter, Jack has been the key man in Wesleyan ' s backfield for the past four years. A superb blocker and tackier, LaBay will go down in history as one of the greatest of Wesleyan field generals. JOE GILMORE, halfback — Jumping Joe is the speed merchant of the Bob- cats, well-known because of his long runs around opponents ' ends. His spectacular broken-field running and pass-catching will be sorely missed, as he graduates in June. ALLEN MACKEY, halfback — Red was Wesleyan ' s passer during the past season and his accurate heaves connected at long range as well as at short. In addition, he is an elusive runner, a good defensive man, and can hold down the kicking job capably. MURMURMONTIS Jl-i 1938 MURMURMONTIS 1938 Bobcats of 1937, Concluded ARTHUR JONES, end — Butch , another Benwood Union product, was an all- state man before he came to Wesleyan. A first-class pass receiver and adept at diagnosing plays, he performed his duties well all season. PAUL GATSKIE, tackle — On innumerable occasions Gats broke through our opponent ' s line to nail the ballcarriers for losses. His grim determination and fine spirit, as well as his all-around ability, made him a valuable asset to the team. JOHN ORR, end — Johnny had a difficult assignment and he carried it out to a high degree of satisfaction. Playing against the strong side, he smeared opposing interference, often stopping the runner for a loss. His pass-catch- ing also won him the praise of the fans. DAVID TENNANT, tackle — Dave plays a bang-up game at either guard or tackle, and wound up the season with a starting position. He ' s tough as they make them and doesn ' t waste any time out there on the field. Next year he ' ll be the man to watch in the line. DONALD GATEWOOD, center— This is Gatey ' s third year on the team and he proved tough for our opponents. He ' s an artist at snapping the ball back and a solid wall on the defense. He ' ll be out for blood next year. ASHFORD BROADWATER, end— Ash gained all-state fame at Parkersburg High and has just completed a great record here at Wesleyan. Few gains were made around this alert and aggressive wingman. DELMAR WALKER, fullback— Del comes from the Ohio Valley, a region famed for its football greats. He seems certain to fall into a first team berth before long and his power and speed can well be used to Wesleyan ' s advantage. CLARK THURMAN, end — Nemo fought his way to the top and won a start- ing position against Catholic U. Believing that you can ' t keep a good man down, he puts all he has into the ball game and gets results. MURMURMONTIS 1938 1938 Prospects C ROSPECTS for a winning team in 1938 are exceptionally bright. Although the positions vacated by the graduation of eight of our best men will be gjggS (littinilt t.. fill, we feel that Coach Kuss will again put another great eleven on the field. With such backs as Moon Mullen. Buck Weber, Red Mackey, and George Grubb on hand, we feel certain that the ball-carrying assignment will be well taken care of. Addison McKown will likely handle the blocking quarter position, with Tuffy Richards coming up from the ranks of the freshmen to lend a hand at that spot. Del Walker. Jimmy Cain, and Joe Andrick round out the corps behind the line. The keyman of the line. Kenny Moore, will be back again for another crack at the opposition and leaves nothing to be desired at the pivot position. Don Gatewood has already demonstrated that he can hold down center when needed. Cebe will have two brilliant guards in Mike Cutney and Bill Ciccone. Vic Dean may win a regular berth if old injuries mend properly. Jack Moore and George Snyder, who showed up well as freshmen, can handle the guard posts in the event that they are called to the front. A host of experienced men will be striving for the tackle berths evacuated by G. Mike and Branchick. Pete Kurlinski and big Jim Campbell seem to have the inside track with Dave Tennant, Bill Wilson, and Fred Peters seeing con- siderable service. The wings create quite a problem, since the graduation of Broadwater and Jones leave them wide open. Paul Gatskie and Clark Thurman are the most probable choices, but Eddie Kosko and Don Steele will let them- selves be heard from at this spot. Thus Wesleyan seems destined to regain much of the prestige she lost during the past season when the whistle blows again in Bobcat Feld next fall. With an average crop of new material, Cebe Ross will be well intrenched to pilot his ' Cats to greater glory. The schedule will be practically the same as last year with one exception. Morris-Harvey will be met at Buckhannon in the opening game, replacing George Washington U. on the card. The complete schedule is: September 24 — Morris-Harvey Buckhannon October 1 — West Virginia Morgantown October 8— Davis-Elkins Elkins October 14 — Duquesne U. Pittsburgh October 22 — Catholic U. Washington October 29 — Waynesburg Buckhannon November 4 — Salem Buckhannon November 11 — St. Vincent Buckhannon November 24 — Marshall Huntington MURMURMONTIS 1938 Basketball Season, 1938 lACED with the loss of four regulars from the 1937 team, the Bobcats went through a tough schedule with only a fair showing in games won. ! T F However, we realize that a team cannot always be measured accurately by the won and lost column and so we can justly pride ourselves in our Orange and Black team this season. Coach Ross was considerably hampered by the fact that freshmen were ineligible to play against West Virginia and Marshall. Wesleyan was conse- quently deficient in reserve strength and often lost games after first-team men had fouled out of the contest. All in all, however, Wesleyan won five contests — two from Bethany and one each from Alderson-Broaddus, St. Vincent, and Fairmont. However, the margin of loss was less than three field goals in five other contests, which seems to indicate that the Methodists played on even terms with their oppon- ents all season. He had a reputation as all-state high school forward to prove, and he did even more than that. We ' re certainly glad to have him back with us for three more campaigns. CARL NAYLOR— One of the tallest men on the squad, Carl used his height to good advantage. Although not a frequent scorer, he played a con- sistent floor game and could be counted on. PAUL YANDERYOORT— Coming to us from Weston High, Yandervoort has caught the eye of Wesleyan fans, who ' ll look to him in the future. His shooting from the far court is little short of sen- sational, and he plays a bang-up passing game. MURMURMONTIS 1938 Basketball Prospects for 1939 w ESLEYAX followers may expect a world-beater on the hardwood next IJy year with the best crop of freshmen in many a day coming- back again. The loss of the three veterans which would otherwise be a severe blow, will be off set by the return of a squad of experienced men. Cebe ' s two ace forwards, Jimmy Herndon and Joe Andrick, will be again available. For the center position, Coach Ross will have to choose between Eddie Kosko and Jim Cain, two of last season ' s promising freshmen. Wesleyan will doubtless be firmly intrenched at the guard posts with Red Mackey and Jack Moore on hand. When they again take the floor, the Bobcats will have a reserve strength which they noticeably lacked during the past season. Such steady performers as Moon Mullen, Don Gatewood, Paul Gatskie, Junior Gawthrop, Zeke Turner, Bill Kiddy. Dave Bisset, Woody Wilson, Don Steele, and a lad named Phares can all be counted upon to come through when the opportunity presents itself. So it appears that the immediate future may bring the return of Wesleyan supremacy in collegiate basketball circles in this state — a position which she once enjoyed and now again is within her grasp. MURMURMDNTIS V 1938 OUR UNDEFEATED NETMEN Varsity Tennis 05 ESLEYAN ' S tennis team enjoyed a highly successful, although some- what abbreviated season, boasting an undefeated team which won the state collegiate tennis championship. Of the thirteen matches originally scheduled only five were actually played. The result was a clean sweep for the Bobcat racqueteers. In the first contest the Methodist netters triumphed 8-1 over the Salem Tigers on the latter ' s courts. Beckley college proved to be easy prey for the Bobcats, who swept all their matches, 6-0. Fairmont State appeared on the local courts only to take it on the chin, 8-1. A few days later Coach Hallam ' s net crew meted out a similar punishment to the Glenville Pioneers, 8-1. In the final match the ' Cats journeyed to Fairmont and came back with a 5-2 decision over the Fairmont Teachers. In winning the state crown, Dave Gray, John Elsey, and John Arnold, number 1, 2, and 3, respectively, made clean sweeps of all their matches to re- main undefeated. Altogether only a total of five individual matches were dropped to opponents. Members of the tennis team other than those named above are Junior Foster, Jack Anderson, Sam Foglesong, Charles Britton, and Morris Lowman. Ten matches have been scheduled to date, two each with West Virginia, Salem, Glenville, Fairmont State, and Davis-Elkins. The only member lost from last year ' s championship team was John Arnold. Present indications point to another undefeated season. MURMURMONTIS 1938 Ladies ' Intramural Sports © mm URING the past year the women ' s intramural athletics has enjoyed another highly successful time. There has been hockey, volleyball, basket- ' ffitjM ball, and baseball.
