Y w- west virgin! ' ckhannon, waiter dawson • editor leonard barnum • bus. mgr. President ' s Message After a lapse of four years, the MURMURMONTIS, West Virginia Wesleyan ' s Year Book, makes its appearance. It has always been a student enterprise, and it continues as such. However, it is not a production of any class or other organization, but Is published by a staff selected from the student body, and under the supervision of the College Board of Publications. This 1937 record is worthy of its place among the other excellent year books of our College. You will find it a source of joy now and in future years. A graduate of Wesleyan in %§§£ i ecame head coach shortly after and has worked wonders with athletic teams year after year, gaining the distinction of producing some of the best small college outfits in the country. This year he brought a new climax to Bobcat football history with th e finest season ever, and the future promises to bring even more glorious triumphs to the man responsible for putting Wesleyan on the map. JIM ELLIS, DIRECTOR CE PUBLICITY — Department of Athletics o HE Bobcats have gone far in the eyes of the sporting world but before them as a herald of the coming victory has gone Jim Ellis. From this capable director of publicity has come page after page of copy extolling the virtues and possibilities of Wesleyan athletic teams. In his quiet, unassuming manner he performs his many duties in a way that is a credit both to his school and to the department of which he is a most important part. Jim Ellis will go far in the sporting world for he has at his finger tips a knowledge of sporting events possessed only by those who have spent many years in the pursuit of their profession. M II IK N MEN BARNUM PETERSON HALL BACHTEL BARKER MIKE MOORE GOODWIN- 5RANCHIK MULLEN BROADWATER LA BAY GATSKIE KURLINSKI GILMORE DEAN WEBER GATEWOOD COLEMAN CAMPBELL JONES CICCONE ORR COOL GRIDIRON MEN THE fIGHTING BOBCATS Cf 1936 H ET ' S all join in on three loud cheers for the 1936 West Virginia Wesleyan football team. These thirty men of might have faithfully attended prac- tice under all conditions. Intense heat, rain and brisk north winds did not daunt them and now that the season is well over, give them due credit for their achievements. Facing one of the toughest schedules any Wesleyan mentor ever faced, Coach Cebe Ross moulded a team that won national fame, a team that showed the fight and spirit for which West Virginia Wesleyan has long been noted. In victory and defeat alike the boys put their hearts and souls into the game, each and every one playing to uphold the well established reputation of the college ' s athletics. Individually and collectively the Bobcats are to be commended for their brilliant play, their smooth cooperation and their loyalty to the school. The season opened on the home field against a scrappy Geneva aggrega- tion and the locals, after a hard fought battle, nosed out the invading Coven- anters by a 7-6 margin. The passing attack of the visitors was a continued threat but a blocked punt proved fatal as Boggs Hall scored and LaBay added the extra point. As a closing feature of the annual Mountain State forest festival at Elk- ins, the Bobcats triumphed over Davis-Elkins ' Scarlet Hurricane to the tune of 26-0, Peterson, Bachtel and Weber doing the scoring honors. Substitutions were frequent and the eager reserves carried on admirably in the shoes of the varsity. Next came a disheartening defeat by a 6-0 score at the hands of St. Vin- cent on the Catholics ' home grounds. The playing field was a sea of mud and the Bobcats were held scoreless after an elusive little St. Vincent halfback flipped across the pay-off stripe for what proved to be the winning margin. The Johnnies recognized the abilities of the various Wesleyan players for when they selected their all opponent team six of our faithful Bobcats were named. B OBCAT — Continued TySTtBE following week hopes ran high as the Wesleyanites invaded foreign |V« territory once more, this time meeting the Mountaineers of West Virginia | 7?S| University in Morgantown. Cebe Ross ' understudies were given a good chance to win over the state university eleven, a feat which has not been performed in the last decade, but once more a muddy gridiron proved the un- doing of the Bobcats as the Mountaineers, led by Kelly Moan, chalked up two touchdowns and a field goal to win 15-0. A disappointed but high spirited Wesleyan team next journeyed to Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania ' s Great Smoky City, where they were slated to lock horns with the mighty Night Riders of Duquesne University who one week previously had downed the Pitt Panthers, potential national champions. Public opinion so highly favored the Dukes that newspaper writers did not give the Bobcats a chance out of a hundred to win. However, in the early moments of the game Ash Broadwater, plucky little Wesleyan end, tackled a Duquesne back behind his own goal line for a safety which meant two points for the lads from the hills of West Virginia. The minutes ticked slowly by and a valiant Bobcat team put up the greatest defensive battle ever witnessed on Forbes Field. In the waning moments of the game those two Wesleyan points loomed larger and larger and the Night Riders opened a desperate passing attack which availed them nothing. Stunned spectators, sports writers and football critics saw a fighting Bobcat team beat the famed Dukes by a two point margin. With that Duquesne victory came national recognition and as the time for the next fracas approached, the general opinion was that over-confidence would result in a Waynesburg victory. But before a record homecoming crowd, the Wesleyanites weathered the battle and left the field with a 14-0 victory. BOBCAT — Conclude d 0 IN to Washington was the encouraging cry of faithful fans as the Bobcats prepared to meet the acid test against the Catholic University Cardinals gESa in the Nation ' s Capital. Before a madly cheering crowd in Brookland Stadium, home hunting grounds of the Cardinal gridders, the Rossmen emerged victorious from another fray, this time by a 24-19 count. It was the first defeat suffered by C. U. on their home field in three years. Arch Mc- Donald, well known sports commentator who broadcast the game over station WJSV, Alexandria, said that the invaders sported the most heady team he had ever seen and added that the game was the most thrilling he had ever witnessed in his many years of announcing. Playing on the home field for two consecutive week-ends, the Bobcats upheld their record by wreaking havoc on Salem, holding the Tigers scoreless while amassing 28 points for themselves, and winning ov er Glenville ' s highly touted Pioneer eleven to a 28-6 tune. In both tilts Coach Ross used his reserves frequently and the eager scrubs carried on in top-notch fashion. In the season ' s final contest, the Wesleyanites downed a heavy Marshall Thundering Herd on the sod of Fairfield Stadium in Huntington. The game was played before a colorful holiday crowd on Thanksgiving afternoon. The score was Wesleyan 6, Marshall 0. And now a special tribute is due those six seniors who will never again wear the orange and black spangles of West Virginia Wesleyan on the football field. An extra cheer, make it loud and long, for Len Barnum, Nelson Peterson, Dave Goodwin. Bud Barker, Boggs Hall and Roy Bachtel. These seniors were the backbone of the Bobcat team and may they carry on in life as they did on the college gridiron. BARNUM LONG LA BAY EICHER WILLIAMS BARKER aLTHOUGH the 1937 edition of the Bobcat basketeers was none too suc- cessful in games won they showed a marked improvement over teams of recent years. At times they were unbeatable and at all times they provided worthy opposition for their opponents. It was truly an aggregation of stars, composed of men capable of playing on teams with the nation ' s best. The team was greatly helped by the return of Jack LaBay and Len Bar- num to the lineup. Both of these great athletes were out last season due to injuries received on the gridiron. Playing at every position at some time throughout the season, Barnum deserves all of the recognition which he received. He leaves a place which will be hard to fill for he was a great defensive star and could always be depended upon to break into the scoring column. Fighting hard every minute of every game he added a zest to the team which was lacking without him. .Tack LaBay is known wherever the Bobcats play as a great defensive player and one of the most aggressive men ever to wear the orange and black. Towards the end of the season Jack was a consistent scoring threat and was often the difference between victory and defeat. ECBCAT RACKETEERS BOBCAT BASKETEERS Don Eicher, the former Scottdale flash, ended his career at Wesleyan bearing the name of one of the greatest offensive stars to play for the Meth- odists in years. He was the high point man of the season and was always feared by his opponents. Long Tom Ross has been hailed as the most outstanding center in Wesl Virginia. He continued to show improvement throughout the season and in another year he will certainly prove to be the greatest center in Wesleyan history. Hud Barker, teamed with Jack LaBay at the guard posts, helped to make up the most formidable pair of guards available. Barker ' s fine defensive play far over-shadowed his lack of offensive power and he will always be remem- bered as a scrappy, happy lad playing for the love of the game. Johnny Williams might well be called the hard luck player of the team. Johnny was certain to hang up one of the highest scoring records in the ration when he was declared ineligible early in the season. Bill Long, another senior, was forced out of varsity competition late in the season due to a fractured collar bone, received in the closing minutes of a hard fought contest. Shall we close by saying that the 1937 Bobcat basketeers were really great ball players who didn ' t get their share of the breaks? ROSS HERXDOX MARTIN ANDRICK MULLEX THORXHILL. Mgr. For the third consecutive season the Wesleyan racqueteers will be led on the clay courts by Dave Ace Gray. The other veterans are Foster, Arnold. Fogel- song and Lowman, the newcomers are Elsey and Anderson and they are ex- pected to bolster the veterans and help to make this the most outstanding season in many years. A long siege of rain during the early part of the season made it impossi- ble for the lads to get an early start, but their interest and enthusiasm has moved them to work harder and make up for lost time. A twelve match schedule has been arranged and local fans will have the opportunity to see some of the state ' s outstanding stars on our home courts. Gipper Arnold is the only Senior on the team. He has been a steady and consistent winner throughout his four years of Varsity play and his position will he hard to fill. INTRAMURAL SPORT XNTRAMURAL sports enjoyed a most successful year at Wesleyan during the past year. Mr. Reemsnyder, the director of the intramural sports de- partment, mapped out an extensive program which provided keen inter- class competition throughout the entire school year. The Juniors, the defending champions of the intramural sports, began the defense of their title by laying claim to the speedball championship. The Juniors have held the crown for the past two years and seemed destined to retain the McCuskey Trophy, the symbol of intramural supremacy, for at least another year. The Freshmen, however, are a serious threat to all other participants. They displayed their prowess at an early date by winning the volleyball tour- nament. Continuing their success into the winter sports program, the Fresh- men won both divisions of the basketball league. The completion of the winter sports found the Juniors winning both the swimming and the water polo contests. The Seniors took all honors in handball, but the Freshmen won the table tennis championship. The advent of spring found Softball taking the spotlight of interest. An eight team league was formed and the closely contested games created stiff competition during the entire season. The introduction of horseshoes saw many entries in this division of intramural competition. A large part of the success of the intramural program is due to the ca- pable assistants under Mr. Reemsnyder who served as directors of the various divisions of sports. Their management of each department was very commend- able and they are to be congratulated on the way in which they have conducted a most successful year of intramural sports. This department is sorry that it is unable to give the final outcome and the winner of the McCuskey Trophy. Due to the late date at which the intra- mural program was completed it is impossible to give recognition to the win- ners and praise them for their fine achievement. The recent school year has seen one of the most successful intramural programs yet to be conducted at Wesleyan. It is well to note the increased number of participants who took part in at least one sport during the year. This is a great indication that intramural sports are on the upward trend at Wesleyan. There is no doubt but that intramural competition will be a key note in the school life at Wesleyan within a very short time. The revival of a defunct annual is not an easy task. Tra- Yfej ditional features must be preserved, bul the completed work nuisi be consistent with the modern pulse. How can one blend the two together? The Editors of 1937 MURMURMONTIS present Volume XXXI in a more concise and less formal edition than any previous volume, but they believe that they have produced the finest book possible from the material at hand. They believe that they have successfully combined both the classic and the streamlined with the result that college memories will be greatly prolonged and the picture of 1937 Wesleyan completely animated. The problems arising from such a task are multifold. New contacts must be made, technical and editorial adjustments must be effected, financial and editorial resources are limited. The conquering of such problems is beyond the power of any one editor or staff of editors. It is necessary to depend in part upon skilled experts and technicians. To these experts who have made 1937 MURMURMONTIS possible the Editors wish to express their keenest appreciation: Mr. C. J. Mertes of the Canton Engraving Company for his assistance in making layouts and supervising engravings, Mr. Sayer of Sayer Studios for the artistic execution of all photographs, Mr. Donald Sincell of Sincell Printing Company for his patient diligence in supervising all printing and binding, and Mr. Eddie Cantor for his cooperation in initiating a novel beauty section in the Murmurmontis.
