The students, wanting a more representative form of government, adopted the Student Government Association Constitution in the Spring of 1969. The new Student Government Association, operating with a Senate of 100 students, went into action on September 27 and immediately got the campus involved in an issue of national concern. The chief responsibilities of the SGA are to hear student opinions, to exert a wholesome effect on student conduct, to provide for the maintenance of high student moral and to foster the best conditions and customs of West Virginia Tech. One of the main purposes of these organiza- tions is to insure the student at Tech an opportunity to develop, within the bounds of his own beliefs, reli- giously as well as academically. The Baptist Student Movement, through regular meetings, strive to know Christ and make Him known through personal witness on campus. The Wesley Foundation, formulated by Methodist students on campus, is dedicated to Christian growth through fellowship as well as study. The Newman Club, an organization of Catholic stu- dents, has as its goal, the supplement of the student's curriculum so that he receives a well-balanced educa- tion. Presbyterian students on campus have an opportun- ity to participate in programs of Christian, academic, and social development through the Westminister Fel- lowship. Pi Kappa Phi has provided campus leadership in make the fraternity and the man. the person of john Harris, vice-president The success of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity of the Student Government Association. can mainly be attributed to two things. H From the beginning, we had the principles. But in that regard, we were no different from many other organizations which start bravely but fail. After the influence of the founding group was no more and the mantle of authority had passed from their shoul- ders, there were other men on whose shoulders this mantle fitted. Of significance to the increasing fraternal success are several other factors. This year, the chapter was awarded by Pi Kappa Phi National Office the Master An event unique in itself is the Oil Drum Regatta. The event held every spring, attracts entries from many Tech students and organizations as well as from other colleges throughout West Virginia and surrounding states. This event provides all Tech stu- dents with an opportunity for festive merrymaking. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity House is always open and we invite you to drop by when time permits. Sigma Pi Nineteen sixty-nine marks the third full year of the Gamma Xi chapter of the Sigma Pi fra- ternity on Tech campus. During this period the Sigma Pi's have promoted fellowship and brotherhood among the members and have strived to provide an atmosphere of improved character and knowledge. The Sigma Pi's have a membership of sixty brothers, with many active in campus affairs - from president of the Student Government to varsity athletics. The brothers also participate enthusiastically in all intramurals. Last year, besides winning seven trophies for intramural activities, they also won the over all intramural championship trophy for the third consecutive year. The Sigma Pi house has undergone some very impressive changes, from the fire escape to the two new porches. These improvements were necessary in order to meet the expand- ing needs of the fraternity and the ever en- larging size of Tech campus. U The Sigma Pi brothers chose Ginny Peck as their candidate for Miss Golden Bear during homecoming. Theyalsoconstructed the largest float in the parade this year. lt was a three level steam boat with a large turning paddle wheel on the back and the great Sigma Pi bell on the front, ringing out the spirit of the Sigma Pi brothers. A number of social functions were sponsored by the Pi's during the past year, including the Fall Playboy Ball and the Spring Orchid Ball plus a large number of house parties. Rho Epsilon Beta The past year has proved to be the most successful year of Rho Epsilon Beta's short history. Large pledge classes have doubled the size of the fraternity. The expanding size, however, has not diverted us from our fore- most goal - that of brotherhood. As Tech's newest fraternity, we have added a new element to our strength. ln january, Beta Chapter of Rho Epsilon Beta was presented its charter at Beckley College. We welcome our brothers at Beckley who wish to share in our ideals of PE brotherhood, leadership and competition. We feel that this Beta Chapter will not only help our fraternity, but will also help West Virginia Tech. Tech is now the home of an intrastate fraternity. Expansion to other college campuses is in the planning. This was the first year the PEB's have spon- sored a candidate for Miss Golden Bear. Miss Brenda Oliver made our task of winning easy. B of the This year we acquired the old Progressive Dorm and set to work re- modeling the interior. When we are finished, we will have a very large and comfortable fraternity house. Nineteen-seventy will mark the year of the graduation of nearly all remaining charter members. We wish to thank all of them for their hard work in establishing Rho Epsilon Beta. Alpha Phi Omega Blue blazers have become symbolic of ser- vice on the West Virginia Tech campus. The men who wear them, the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega, have carried out a solid program of campus and community service for nearly ten years. Mu Tau Chapter has won the acclaim of the administration, the faculty, and the stu- dent body for its work during reistration, con- vocations, and graduation. A multitude of areas are served by Alpha Phi Omega men, in pro- jects as simple as a one-man guided tour to a homecoming production requiring the efforts of fifty people. By assembling in a spirit of brotherhood, men of Alpha Phi Omega develop leadership, en- courage friendship, and provide service to the campus, the community, and the nation. This fraternity extends a splendid opportunity for the college student to develop these principles into a basis for his daily life. Alpha Phi Omega, however, does not try to make men of boys.- it takes men and gives them the opportunity to be better men. 1 I Row 7. Last Fall you could see the Cross Country team running every day keeping themselves in shape. This continual practice won for Tech a first place finish in the conference. The Bears breezed through the season winning fourteen matches while losing only four. All their defeats were at the hands for feetl of non-conference competi- tors. The conference meet was just as easy for the Bears to win as were their fourteen regu- lar season conference meets. The Bears set a new record scoring a new low of 21 points. Coach Brown has done an excellent job with his Cross Country team. Back the Bears and they will bring back another first place trophy next year. Congratulations, Coach. Before the semester break, they lost only in the championship game of the Warm-Up Tournament and to a tough Mid-American team, To- ledo. The Bears then journeyed to Virginia to play in the Bridgewater Tournament. They soundly defeated Bridgewater and Milligan and captured the champion- ship. The loss of Billy Auxier for academic ineligibility slowed the Bears down after they returned to action after the break. Coach Phillips did some experimenting and soon the Bears were on the winning trail again. The Bears had their usual rough and tumble games with Morris Harvey losing to them twice by one point. However, this is the best basketball team in recent years at Tech, and with many of the players returning next season Coach Phillips can look forward to another fine season. With a squad packed with Iettermen, it would seem that the Bears were going to make themselves known in the conference. Injuries hampered them along with a schedule which was one of the tough- est in recent years. However, when a team has the potential that the Bears did, they should have had a much better season. Homecoming was the best performance of the season for the Bears. The pass, which proved to be our weakness all year, was the deciding factor. Bluefield threw three touch- down passes against the secondary all of which were forty yards or longer. Next season the Bears will be loaded with returning Iettermen once again. Let's get out and back our Bears next year and make them a conference power. P. Sumpter, K. Hopkins, E. Roth, l. Moschino, D. Stull 1. Lassak, N. Hopkins, B. Hopkins, T. Evans, 1.
