7A PRESIDENT CHARLES E. LAWALL This 1942 issue of the Monticola is unusually symbolic because it marks the seventy-fifth anni- versary of the University. The University was founded in 1867 as the West Virginia Agricul- tural College and then, in 1868, became West Virginia University. The Monticola portrays the events that have taken place during the year and will recall to your minds throughout the years many happy memories of your University days. I wish to commend the editors of the 1942 Monticola for the excellent way in which they have presented this publication. They have com- memorated the graduating class through this issue in a splendid way and I know that all mem- bers of the class will treasure their volumes and refer to them frequently in the years to come. To the seniors who are being graduated this year and are leaving the campus during these critical days may I say that I am sure all of you will acquit yourselves as good citizens and will serve your country to the best of your ability. Already many of your colleagues have answered the call to duty and have brought glory to their country and their alma mater.
