yny Mortar Board is the honorary organization for sen- ior women. Its members are chosen from among sen- ior girls who have proven themselves to be outstand- ing in leadership, scholarship, and service to the university. Laurel Cottage, a co-operative house maintained for the benefit of university girls is an important con- tribution made by Mortar Board to the welfare of the student body. Another service project Includes the freshman honor roll for girls who make an average of 2.5 or better their first semester. Arch Bullard, Jack Browning, William Vance, Thad Pritt, Fi Batar Cappar is the men ' s mock honorary for lettermen and campus leaders; Alfa chapter was founded at West Virginia University on March 13, 1914. The members of the new society adopted as their badge the small square of leather, emblematic of the goal of college life, the sheepskin. The fasten- er Is a small piece of brass whose significance Is a secret of the organization. Two important functions of Fi Batar are sponsor- ship of an annual Tag Day, proceeds of which are used to make scholarship loans to minor sports ath- letes, and participation In the Freshman hHonor Court, which serves to prescribe the punishment for violators of freshman rules. Rhododendron, junior women ' s honorary, was or- ganized so that recognition could be given to junior women who had shown promise in scholarship, leader- ship and character and to give them an opportunity to work together for the benefit of the university. The organization ' s most outstanding project is the sponsorship of Rhododendron hlouse, a cooperative establishment organized on the campus in order to help university women to live as economically as pos- sible and yet give them the advantages of group life. Current officers are: Elizabeth Dickinson, president; Elizabeth hHashinger, secretary; Betty Preece, treasurer. fi [23]
