' ' they served loyally alma mater • robert alien armstrong — able scholar, inspiring teacher, sympathetic friend, kindly gentleman. e his service to west Virginia as an educator, editor, and author, is unparal- leled, armstrong published the first daily newspaper in harrison county, and for seventeen years he edited the west Virginia school journal, he was once principal of west liberty state normal school, and for two years vice-president of the university, and also served as president of west Virginia. • he was a teacher of english and the departmental head under eleven of the thirteen university presidents, his dominant interest in life was the teaching of youth, the influence for good of dr. armstrong has been immeasurable. • Cleveland mc sherry seibert was born in berkeley county nov. 1, 1884. after attending a private military school, he entered west Virginia university, to be graduated in law in 1904. while an undergraduate, seibert was a charter member of pi kappa alpha fraternity at west Virginia, he first entered public life in 1909, being elected to the state legislature, distinguished by being the youngest member of the house, seibert served as mayor of martinsburg several terms. • in June, 1929, he was appointed to the university board of governors by governor conley for a period of four years, in 1934, governor kump reap- pointed him for another four year term, seibert served faithfully, and as one who devoted a lifetime to the welfare of others, his equal will long be unfound in the portals of alma mater. • though not a graduate of the university, louis black, however, devoted almost one-third of a century to the service of west Virginia . . . for that we are appreciative . . . louis black — the pioneer of the music school ... in 1898, he received his artist diploma from the new england conservatory of music . . . after extensive study and teaching on the continent, he returned to the united states . . . from 1909 until 1934 black was director of the school of music at alma mater . . . and it was under his tutelage that the department grew and prospered ... he served as professor emeritus from 1934 until his death last year . . . they rest from their labors and their works do follow them, armstrong • seiberf • black Page twenty-one
