Simpson (a.b. md.) school of medicine rufh e. noer (a.b.) dean of women t. p. hardman (j.d.) college of law earl hudelson (ph.d.) college of education Page twenty ' ' they served loyally alma mater • robert alien armstrong — able scholar, inspiring teacher, sympathetic friend, kindly gentleman. e his service to west Virginia as an educator, editor, and author, is unparal- leled, armstrong published the first daily newspaper in harrison county, and for seventeen years he edited the west Virginia school journal, he was once principal of west liberty state normal school, and for two years vice-president of the university, and also served as president of west Virginia. • he was a teacher of english and the departmental head under eleven of the thirteen university presidents, his dominant interest in life was the teaching of youth, the influence for good of dr. armstrong has been immeasurable. • Cleveland mc sherry seibert was born in berkeley county nov. 1, 1884. after attending a private military school, he entered west Virginia university, to be graduated in law in 1904. while an undergraduate, seibert was a charter member of pi kappa alpha fraternity at west Virginia, he first entered public life in 1909, being elected to the state legislature, distinguished by being the youngest member of the house, seibert served as mayor of martinsburg several terms. • in June, 1929, he was appointed to the university board of governors by governor conley for a period of four years, in 1934, governor kump reap- pointed him for another four year term, seibert served faithfully, and as one who devoted a lifetime to the welfare of others, his equal will long be unfound in the portals of alma mater. • though not a graduate of the university, louis black, however, devoted almost one-third of a century to the service of west Virginia . . . for that we are appreciative . . . louis black — the pioneer of the music school ... in 1898, he received his artist diploma from the new england conservatory of music . . . after extensive study and teaching on the continent, he returned to the united states . . . from 1909 until 1934 black was director of the school of music at alma mater . . . and it was under his tutelage that the department grew and prospered ... he served as professor emeritus from 1934 until his death last year . . . they rest from their labors and their works do follow them, armstrong • seiberf • black Page twenty-one cropp dotson ailes swing kearns Br adford gibbs • the student council of west Virginia university is the governing organ of the student body, it consists of nine members . . . five selected from the campus at large . . . and the presidents of the four classes. . . . • president of the student body, hosmer cropp, acts as its presi- dent in an ex officio capacity . . . fiscal matters are referred to the budget commission for review, this commission is an entirely separate organization which controls all student finances. . . . • members of the senate this year include: albert colebank, senior man representative; mary francis gibbs, senior woman; Charles swing, junior man representative; billie dotson, junior woman; thomas bradford, senior class president; frank kearns, junior class president; geno ailes, sophomore class president. student council Page twenty-two liller nutter burdette dotson fromme grimr Shaffer gibbs cheesman • each and every gal enrolled in the university is a member of w.s.g.a., the only organization for the weaker sex that is all-inclu- sive in its membership . . . the ' 36- ' 37 council big-shots included : anna cheesman, president; mary francis gibbs, vice-president; Catherine shaffer, secretary; anne fromme, treasurer; marion havener, second vice-president; evelene miller, senior representa- tive; billie dotson, junior representative; June grimm, sophomore representative; carmen nutter, freshman representative; elaine burdette, student union chairman. woman ' s student government association Page twenty-three SENIORS offi icers Ihomas a. Page one hundred forty-one the daily James b. hall managing editor Herbert welch editor prof. p. i. reed head of journalism department • the department of journalism at west Virginia university is considered by authorities and by actuality to be one of the outstanding newspaper schools in the country . . . under the direction of dr. p. i. reed . . . and instruction of prof, george rinehart . . . and h. b. michelson . . . the daily athenaeum is published every week day with the exception of Sunday . . . offers numer- ous opportunities for training in many phases of journalism ... as has been proven by graduates . . . now successful in the professional world. . . . business manager -- harmer I. cox, ' 37 editor-in-chief - herbert welch, ' 37 managing editor james b. hall, ' 37 Page one hundred forty-two a t h e n a e u m • in September, 1887, the first copy of the athenaeum was published with u. s. grant pitzer as the first editor, it was planned to put out an issue every two weeks and the printing was done by Julian fleming, proprietor of the new dominion steam printing house. • in order to promote the literary taste of the students; to narrate college events; to keep alumni interested in their alma mater, and to express the life growth and attainments of the university, c. w. waddell and a. w. smith took over the editorship in I 899, publishing the paper every first and third Saturday of each month. • with the issue of September, 1901, the athenaeum was changed into a weekly paper, devoted chiefly to the local news of the university and personal items about its students, friends, and teachers. the paper became a semi- weekly publication in 1921, appearing every tuesday and friday, and in 1923 it appeared as a tri-weekly publication, coming out every tuesday, thursday, and Saturday. • in march, 1926, at a mass meeting, the student body voted in favor of an increase in fees to cover the cost of publishing the paper five times a week, but it was not until 1933 that the daily athenaeum was an actuality, it now appears in tabloid form every morning except Sunday and monday. • the first editor-in-chief of the daily was harry j. marker; robert shaffer was managing editor and william smith, business manager.
