MONTICOLA — : Born Feb. 27, 1863 in Washington County. Ohio. He received his A.B. degree from Roanoke College in 1890, with the highest grade in his class, and received his A.M. degree in 1895. He later went to Harvard Graduate School for two years. He was a teacher in the public schools for four pears; private schools for two years. He went to West Virginia Wesleyan as a professor of Latin and Modern Languages until 1907, and became a professor of Latin at West Virginia University the same year. He was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences until 1911, when he became Acting President of the University until 1914 and then elected as President, serving in this capacity until 1928. He 19 a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
