exchange Students fpom Brazil Amerigo Carlos Basile, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, proved to be an exciting, effervescent addition to WSHS when he came with Olga to spend his vacation with us. His comments were typical: I must be losing my mind to come here in all this snow when I could be on the beach in Rio! However, he admitted that he loved his new family and brother, Steve Ulrich, and said they made it worthwhile leaving his own family for a time. Carlos plans to become an engineer and took classes in mechanical drawing, analytical algebra, and electronics as well as government, English, and journalism. He says he is coming back to see us, and we surely hope he does. Olga Regina Cardoza, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, spent her summer vacation with us for three months as part of the first Exchange Student program at West Springfield, under the di¬ rection of Mr. Elgyn Julca, chairman of the department of Foreign Languages. Although acknowledging that American life is con¬ fusing, Olga entered heartily into the sport, parties and activities hosted by her sister, Linda Lawrence. She plans to become a teacher in her own country and says that her practice in speaking English while here will be a great help to her. 26
