There are large ones and small ones, rugged ones and easy ones, fearsome ones and safe ones. People respond to mountains in many different ways. Some want only the dangerous ones and can hardly be restrained from tackling them on sight. Others prefer the sott, easy ones and have a grand time in the mild but steady climb. Then there are those who shy away from any kind of going except the downhill type. In the same way, each person chooses the kind of life challenge he is willing to undertake, and by his choice he determines his destiny and the companion who will share it. He will be with those who head any endeavor, or with those who make up the great majority, or with those who muddle about at the end. Climbing the towering, breath-taking mountain is hardest, but it is the most exhilarating! The air is purest at the summit, the scenery most beautiful. lt is the van- tage point which reavels life in its true grandeur. . f 3 7 Lge f-120 C 1250512 Tfeaa'-4 cf 540 X49 ki if c..f6f:v72fg,z Jfcgwai jfcffbc cM,,17,54g!liL0Zi: I QOQ,j!,',A545gg, 1- - i m a' 5 7 U 5 10 A 5 ilT1I19 2t'21Z32l25?5 'IGZSNBT LP ,fy 1' ,...:-.4 tr 1-ir 4-ff If 'L' GZLVAL, f MMU F' ll Mrs. Sally Bryan Scholarship Counselor ' ,. f ,232hw4f3'r A 4,4 Mrs. Katherine Olsen Miss Ruth Phillips Glfls' Counselor Counselor To reach The peak of a mounTain involves The Taking of a greaT number of sTeps over whaT is usually a very difficulT paTh. In administering most phases ot student activities, C.S.G. endeavors to create a feeling of spirit and cooperation within the school while enabling students to participate ' in the operation of democratic government. r - J This year we have tried to accomplish these things J through the cabinet, the student council and the separate commissions. In sponsoring activities such as the Student Leadership Conference, Square Dance, Assemblies, West Seattle Day, etc., we have striven to include as many fellow students as possible with the idea ot stimulating each other to participate in school events and to develop enthusiasm for the school. Whether or not we have succeeded in accomplishing the desired goals is a matter of iudgment for the student body, but we sincerely hope that Cooperative School Gov- ernment has made a worthwhile contribution in helping 'tv to develop and maintain a better West Seattle High School. This has been the theme of our'Girls' Club year, and through our many activities we have tried to promote friendships for all girls. Besides friendships each girl can gain a great deal from working in Girls' 'Club, and some ol these gains are self-confidence, personal abil ity, the knowledge of group participation, ami higher ideals and goals, Working in Girls' Club is like climbing a moun tain. Starting at the bottom, through hartl work, you gradually work your way up. Sometimes you find the footing hard, and you stumble a little, but you learn, and you he come a better person for it. The many successful activities of this year have been possible only through the activr: participation of all the girls, and through thru guidance of our wonderful advisor, Mrs. Olsen We hope each girl will be able to look baci on this year with happy thoughts toward Girls' Club, and we know that the experiences we have gained will help all of us in the future. Mr. Barros Advisor Swim Trophy Presentation This year Mr. Barros, the officers, and all the boys have gone all-out to make our Boys' Club the best in the city. We have felt all along that the administration and faculty have been very cooperative in helping us to make our functions successful. During the year we have introduced various events to the school. In the fall and spring we had two successful swim meets, and a track meet which everyone seemed to enioy, We credit much of our success in these new events to the desire for competition between classes. Also, we have carried on the traditional customs of Boys' Club. The annual dance honoring the senior letter- men was one of the best ever held. In addition to the dance, we held the auto show, and directed the games at our Potlatch Day. We wish to express our thanks to all who helped on committees, and to everyone else for allowing us to have the best year yet. During the year the students on the staff are vividly aware of all the events hap- pening at West Seattle. Faculty, sports, and individual class events of school life are recorded by members of the staff. The process of recording these events into an organized book is completed after much thought and work. First, the staff must think up a theme to center their book around, which decides the charac- ter of the book. Qnce the theme is de- cided upon, the book is divided into vari- ous sections and assigned to certain stu- dents to complete. Through the guidance of the advisor, Mrs. McDonnell, and the co-editors, Madeleine Blitz .and Karen Parsloe, the pages are layed out and copy is made. Then the staff must worry about the deadlinesHwhen the pages are due. Kimtah is put to bed after this, and the staff relaxes and thinks about the next year's book and theme. Lena, W? Examining the record for the season you will find West Seattle in third place with five wins and two losses. This record does not do merit to the effort put into the game by the boys who wore the blue and gold. In recognition of our great team, Mr. Ullin said that it was one of the finest teams he had ever coached here at West Seattle. Only one team could compare with this one, and it was the team of '48 that wound up in the Turkey Day Game. In going over the season, we find that in the first game West Seattle suffered a loss to Garfield, who was to be the eventual champion. Then the picture brightened as West Seattle went on the warpath and downed Cleveland and Queen Anne respectively by scores of 6 to O. Continuing on, they turned back a big Roosevelt squad on the terms of 7 to 2. Next to fall was Ballard, who was handed a defeat by the score of I4 to 6, termed a big upset by newspapermen of the city. Things began to look really bright and a possible chance to play in the Turkey game loomed into sight. After scalping Lincoln by a I9 to 7 defeat our slim chances were pinned on the Garfield-Ballard game. Spirits rose high that week, as everyone was pulling for Ballard. It was the school's hope for a Ballard victory over the Bulldogs to make it possible for West Seattle to play in the all important Turkey Day Game. ln the final week with Garfield leading the league and Franklin and West Seattle one game behind, it looked like an exciting climax to the season. lt turned out to be shattered dreams with Garfield winning over Ballard. Franklin, the next night, snapped the Indian five game winning streak with a disappointing score of I3 to O, as the Indians came so close to the championship, and yet so far. To the men in the Blue and Gold who fought for West Seattle, we thank you. From our great team we had four players named to All-City, and the same number received honorable mention for outstanding play. lt is for certain that if the students of West Seattle could hand out such an honor, all would receive it for outstanding performance. Reviewing the second and third teams' seasons it is found that the wins did not equal the losses. However, the primary purpose of these teams is to build for the coming year. This year's second team has some good players who will be able to fill the shoes of the graduating varsity. Coach Roberts said that you cannot expect too much of the third team, because for many ofthe boys this was their first experience in league competition. The third team still has another year to prove itself before becoming the varsity team. THIRD TEAM Back row Row six Row five Row four Row three Row two Row one D. Grimes, D. Claboe, Coach Roberts. Although the Indians kept on the losing trail they still came back for more, with the vigor and fight they started with. The Indians looked good when dropping a close decision to Queen Anne by a score of 62 to 60. In the second encounter, the Grizzlies downed a scrapping Indian squad with the score ending at 58 to 43. Then, in the first game with Cleveland, West Seattle was handed a slight upset by a score of 63 to 46. In their second meeting, the winless Braves were about to win their first game, but the Eagles pulled it out of the fire with less than one minute to go by a score of 63 to 60. Next to invade Denny were the Beavers of Ballard. The Beavers went home with a victory by a score of 63 to 58. Ballard came back against the Indians with a big crew which proved to be too much for the West Siders, with a score of 72 to 5l. Willt WGST Seattle fighting with Franklin for the cellar position of the league, Franklin graciously relin- quished it to the Indians with a score of 58 to 53. The second meeting, which was the thirteenth game of the season, proved to be the lucky one for the Indians. They set the Quakers down Wlflt B SCOVG Of 53 to 4l- Meeting the defending state champion, Lincoln, the Indians went down to defeat by a score of 7l to 47. On their own court, the Indians looked better against Lincoln, but still were downed by a score of 86 to 54. Finding the Teds coming to Denny, the lowly Indians were ready to upset Roosevelt, but went down to defeat by a score of 62 to 53. In the second game the Indians were looking for another victory, they pulled this one out by a score of 40 to 35. Next there was Garfield, who gave more trouble to the Indians than anyone else. They set the West Siders back both times. The first game was 7l to 47, the second game was 63 to 43. Although the season was darkened by the record of losses, there were still a few bright spots in it. Jim Thomas was selected first team all-city, and Bob House won honorable mention. The most encouraging thing was the spirit shown by the Indians in game after game, regardless of losses. The Second team possessed a record ot 4 wins, and 8 losses, while the Third team had a record of 7 wins, and 5 losses. With one senior and the rest iunior returning Iettermen this could be bright but still could be another season of building for the Indians. If some of the new sophomores prove themselves as good as they showed early this spring this could place West Seattle about third or fourth, according to Mr. Franks, Tennis coach. GOLF With the season not yet started, it is hard to determine what the future holds for the golfers of West Seattle. In asking Coach Doty of this season's prospects, he said we have a great chance if Zarley recovers and the progress of his sophomores proceed along about a normal pace. This leaves the season a big question mark. The choirs and ensemble have given much time and enioyment to West Seattle High School and Community participating in a T.V. Program, the Christmas Program, Alumni Reunion, the All- City Festival, Spring Concert, Baccalaureate, and singing for West Seattle civic clubs. Under Mr. Fosso, they have grown to become an outstanding group in this area, being the only high school organization to participate in the National Symposium of Creative Arts, March 8, at the University of Washington. The Band and Orchestra are readily recognized for their contribution to school life in musically representing West Seattle at sports events, in the Christmas Parade and Assembly, tPepJ concerts, and contests.
