VICE-PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Have you ever seen a bridge that was essential? I don't mean convenient, or desirable, or helpful. I mean lust essen- tial. ln almost all cases we find other ways to get to the other side of whatever it is that bridges cross. So nobody can say that we must have bridges. But think what would happen if we didn't have them! As with bridges, so with education. Education carries us over barriers, from savagery to understanding. We don't have to have schools, but every other way of learning requires more time, more money, more energy, and more pain. Society builds bridges because they are convenient. Society builds schools because they have proved to be the best way of transmitting knowledge and culture. I GORDON HANNAFORD PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Our car rolls swiftly and smoothly across a great bridge We appreciate its usefulness. We marvel at its grace an beauty. We feel secure on its strong foundations. But w are apt to forget for the moment that its real foundation were laid in the vision and skill of the bridge builder. Great as our bridge is, there are greater bridges yet to b built. To build them we will need knowledge, creative imag ination and faith. The knowledge may be had for the seek ing. The creative imagination can be developed through practice. But the faith must be built slowly, block by block, out of our experiences of living and working together. Together we can build bridges which will reach across all obstacles and bring us to peace and understanding. CECIL F. BULLOCK 10
