Dedication The 1966 Occident is dedicated to Miss Mary A. Barnum. Since her graduation from Nazareth College in 1959, Miss Barnum has been a competent and dynamic member of the West High faculty. In her English classes, students develop their reasoning and judgment by analyzing themes, writing character studies, and par- ticipating in lively discussions, and they improve their ability to express them- selves with the aid of Miss Barnum's zany grammar and vocabulary tests. Her ability to help students with any personal or scholastic problem, willingness to devote time to class and extra-curricular activities, frankness, and exceptional wit and sense of humor are all reasons why Miss Barnum is admired and respected both as a teacher and as a person. 5

Proudly waves old West Highis emblem, Black and orange fair, Floats triumphant in the breezes No dishonor there. Student days have fondest memories Comrades here we stand, As our troth to alma mater Pledge we hand in hand - West Highis Alma Mater Foreword The primary goal of a high school education is the realization of the full potential of each student in all areas of living. A most im- portant aspect of this process is learning to work together to achieve this common goal. As we participate in classroom work, club activities, and sports, we develop an understanding of our- selves in relation to the world around us, and we discover the value of teamwork and co-operation. As expressed in the Alma Mater, we pledge ourselves to work together for a better school, a better community, and a better world. The 1966 Occident at- tempts to depict West High students as they share the experience of becoming adults. - The Editors 4
