Since we first came to West High School, we have taken our problems to him, and he has dealt with them with both wisdom and kindliness. He has taken a personal interest in each of us, and has shown an understanding which we shall not soon forget. George Lombart attended Indiana University for a year after his.graduation from Benjamin Franklin High School. He then transferred to the University of Roch- ester from which he received an A.B. degree in 1951 and an M.A. in 1952. He began teaching at West High in September, 1952. 4 . MW' Awww J 2 AWB. The leaping flames of the bonfire on a crisp autumn night, The surging high spirits of a football game on a blue and gold October afternoon, . The caroling choirs at Christmastime, The gay carnival ballyhoo on West High Day, The proud, solemn sight of the Memorial Day standing guard, The anxious anticipation during the hectic hours of Regents week, And finally, the majestic strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Harry C. Carpenter's. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department chose to remember 1ts founder with this statement made by an old friend of He was first and foremost a true scientist, and he maintained that his department should be truly scientific in all its teaching. Secondly he had a very great love for young people, especially teenagers, and had a great faith in their goodness and tremendous worth. I think that our Science Department today received a fine legacy from Mr. Carpenter and is making a real effort to keep them fresh for the new generations to follow. E. D. Bresee How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. 14 I L A - MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Mathematics is one of the most precise of the sciences. The very thing which makes it most diiiicult to master is also the soul of its loveliness. H Euclid alone Has looked on Beauty bare. Fortunate they Who, though once only and then but far away, Have heard her massive sandal set on stone. With more Latin students than our school has had for many years this department stated, Notitia linguarum est prima porta sapientiae. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department prepares a large number of West High students to enter the world of business shortly after graduation. Well they know that: There is no better ballast for keeping the mind on its keel, and saving it from all risk of crankiness, than business. J. R. FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT My art is the painting of soul, So fine so exacting, so strange: To blend in one tangible whole The manifold features of change. Gamaliel Bradford The art department has a far greater job than that of teaching the proper use of tools. MUSIC DEPARTMENT Music is a universal language. It knows no social barriers, political ideologies, racial hatreds, geographi- cal boundaries, or monetary levels. It is made up of love and hatred, joy and sorrow, suspicion and fear, happi- ness and fun stirred together with the spoon of poetry. Mr. Ahern EQ DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION The quotation, Kindle knowledge in a sturdy stove and warm the whole world, is an excellent way of expressing the importance of Physical Education. Good health has a very important bearing on our modern society. As medical science has improved, so our life expectancy has improved, but proper exercise is still important. Physical Education not only im- proves our physical well being, but also our mental well being. Partici- pation in sports encourages a feeling of team work and fair play. It approves the budgets and dates of school uctivitics and suggests improvements in the student government. 88 Each member is chosen to represent his homeroom in the deciding of school policies. In addi- tion, the Corps trains operators for the various types of projectors and other machines. A reserve of projection- ists is available at all times so that teachers may schedule audio-visual aids at their convenience. Through these services, the Audio-Visual Corps plays a large part in making classroom work more interesting. 97 C. Grippo, D. Lovullo, P. Meyer, M. Adams, D. King, P. O'Keefe, S. Cook, C. Ameele. At eight-fifteen on a Monday morning the editors all wax eloquent over their particular problems while Sue Davis harangues the mob. Jim and Rick found that the yearbook required not only the sweat of their brows but the shirts off their backs while taking a uniform Junior Choir picture. Long-suffering mothers provided nourishment when we worked straight through lunch to make a deadline. One day tumed out to be a comedy of errors that left all of us stranded in a broken-down car far out Chili Avenue, while Barb Taff hunted for a tow truck. Obstacles like these are hard to foresee. In Rochester, the students of the Eastman School make it possible for many young people to leam to play an instrument and participate in an orchestra such as ours. The team had a better year than the record indicates, since they dropped some close decisions. Especially close was the 1-0 loss to Batavia. The moundsmen finished with a 3-5 record in league play and broke even in non- league competition with 3-3. Two well-eamed victories were over non-league rival Aquinas by scores of 10-0 and 1-1. Next year the team will return to West High Field and find a new diamond facing them. SOCCER On any Wednesday afternoon amid the rust colored autumn leaves, the Girl's Soccer Ieam can be seen playing on the lawn of West High. Although soccer is one of the rougher, more active sports, it has been gaining support every year among the girls. It has always been an intramural sport, but the girls would like an opportunity to show their skill against other schools. S. DeWitt, co-captain, J. Hadley, captain, S. Frank. C. Blair, F. One of the nicest attractions of baseball is that it offers an opportunity to get out and enjoy the fresh spring air after spending the day inside. Here we see the girls participating in a game on the lawn. 148 BASKETBALL Basketball is a sport enjoyed by many girls at West High. As you see by their smiles, they always enjoy a brisk game after school. The Basketball Club was well supported this year with a surprisingly large number of girls from the younger grades, which indicates as good a Basketball Club in the future as in the last few years. Eight members and a student referee were chosen to participate in playoff games against other schools. At the first Playday, held at Madison High School, the team lost all of its three games. At the second Playday, held at Charlotte High School, the girls did much better, winning two of their three games. Row I, left to right: F. Kastner, R. Lamar, E. Meisner, P. Gillaspie, J. DeRyke, N. Because of the lack of time available in the physical education classes, Mr. Lombart consented to lead the club during seventh period on Mondays. The club is predicted to be active in future years because of its popularity. Row 1, left to right: M. Plate, K. Grubaugh, B. Dixon, C. Schiender. Row 2: B. Stienfelot, S. Dick, M. Canan, B. The Tumbling Club was originated to help girls acquire the skill needed to perform the many different gymnastic feats. The beginners in gymnastics look forward to the time they will become pros,', while the girls who are more advanced, strive to perfect their present skills and learn more diflicult feats. BADMINTON The Badminton Club held what is known as a ladder tournament this year. In this type of toumament a player challenges another player above her on the board. If the challenger wins the game, the two players change positions on the board. The top three players on the ladder at the end of the toumament were Carol Stone, Linda Detweiler, and Barbara Moore. RECREATIONAL SWIMMING The spacious West High swimming pool has provided after school enjoyment and recreation for many years. Here we see the large number of girls, from every grade, who take advantage of this privilege. WATER BALLET The Water Ballet Club gave a show called Far Away Places in May. The girls practiced very hard all year long in order to put on a show in the spring for the school. They not only practiced swim- ming, but they had to do exercises before each session to limber up and keep in shape. For the show, they had flags from dif- ferent countries all around the pool. One of the numbers which they did was called Wunderbar. Some of the girls were dressed up as boys with heavy red sus- penders over their blue bathing suits. They held beer mugs for effect. The girls in the number wore yellow bathing caps with yellow braids and bangs, and had flowers and bows adoming the rest of their cos- tumes.
