Willard Burt retired in January. He received his own education at Holley High School and the University of Rochester. After teaching math and science in Bath and Geneva, New York, and serving overseas during World War I, Mr. Burt came to Rochester in 1919 where he taught mathematics at Rochester In- stitute of Technology and then served at John Marshall High School as head of the science department, boys' adviser, and vice-principal respectively. in 1946 Mr. Burt became principal of West High School. lt is with a sincere appreciation of his fine leadership and his devotion to the teaching profession that we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Burt. We will miss him, and we wish him many happy years of retirement. . C, 041, iz 'kvrrv qw C. WILLARD BURT A favorite teacher here for eight years was lngraham Humphrey, who left West High to become head of the math and science departments at Edison Technical High School. Mr. Humphrey was graduated from Alfred University with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his Masters degree from the University of Rochester. After coming to West in 1950, he taught physics. I-lis gruff military manner and colorful language combined with his mag- nificent sense of humor endeared him to the hearts of his students and fellow faculty members. All who knew him were deeply sorry to see him leave. For his devoted service to West High we, the Class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Humphrey. INGRAHAM HUMPHREY 3 1 9 , We would also like to acknowledge the assistance of Miss Ruth E. Mulcock, Di- rector of Public Information at Rochester City Hall, who took a personal interest in our endeavors, devoted a considerable amount of time to our problems, and, as Mr. Aex's representative, provided the pictures on this page as well as the photo- graphs of the proposed Civic Center. RUTH E. MULCOCK The Senior Annual staff would like to express its appreciation to City Manager Robert P. Aex for all the help he has given to the yearbook. Mr. Aex very willingly cooperated with the staff by mak- ing available the plans and drawings of the new Civic Center that appeal in this book. ROBERT P. AEX 6 u n . 1 ' r N Yf' . At West High a primary purpose of the school is the acquisition of knowl- edge, and, in addition to classes, many activities recognize and are related to intellectual achievement. 1 X Q' kg ' K 1. The Heart of Your Yearbook . . . priceless school memories I . live in photography by Varden. DEN Srunlos. INC. R OFFICIAL YEARBOOK PHOTOGRAPHERS YEARBOOK DIVISION 28 South Union Street 0 Rochester 7, New York 111 Perhaps one of Miss Sheridan's own fav- orite quotations best expresses the basic philosophy of both these teachers. He that has dedicated his mind to virtue and the good of human society, whereof he is a member, has consummated all that is either profitable or necessary for him to know or to do towards the establishment of his peace. -Seneca Miss Bullard passed away on April 6, 1958, only a month after retiring from West. She had been a teacher here for 31 years. Gifted with a fine sense of humor and a real love for the English language, she will be remembered with affection by many, many of her pupils. IN MEMORIAM After the yearbook went to press, West High was shocked by the death of two of its Hnest English teachers, Miss Gertrude Sheridan and Miss Gladys Bullard. The senior class is grateful that it has the op- portunity to pay tribute to their hard work and devoted service. Miss Sheridan passed away, suddenly on April 25, 1958, after 38 years as teacher and department head. She represented unusually high standards of moral char- acter and academic achievement. She was an inspiration to both her students and colleagues and a beloved department head. Her voice in West High functions, includ- ing assembly programs, was reflected in the superior achievements of West High students and the excellence of school ac- tivities. 'f SJ1F'?
