SMITH The class of 1951 takes great pleasure in dedicating its yearbook to the two women who have done a great service to the school through their work on the Senior Occident. Mrs. Smith has for several years served as the faculty adviser. Mrs. Keef, who stepped into her job this year, has given us invaluable assistance without which this book could not have been made possible. Class of 1951 5 Y, 4 n if P yxw- x X YYXX ff ' C 0 I 0 , . His special interest is to see that the honor of West is always upheldg he says, My sentiments are expressed in the Alma Mater, which says, 'No dishonor there' M. Principal C. WILLARD BURT, West High School's principal, has done much to keep our school's standards high. He shows great interest in school activities and is always willing to assist wherever he is able. Mr. Burt's office door is always open, a symbol of welcome to all, whether they come for advice or just for a friendly visit. We, the students of West High, are proud to have such a man as our principal and friend. Mr Pickard first made his appearance on the West High faculty when as a college senior he was Called upon to supply in the Chem- istry Department After graduation from college, he returned to West as a teacher of physical eography. ln 1938 he became boys, advisor and now is also a guidance counselor. After teaching for one year in the Physical Education Department, she was promoted to the position of girls' advisor. This year she was also the senior girls' guidance counselor. When we entered West High Miss Buller and Mr. Rud- man were picked to assist and guide us. Our disappointment at losing Mr. Rudman soon changed to delight over the choice of his successor, Mr. Saunders. Instead of having separate organi- zations for the juniors and seniors, the two classes were combined in one club. In the absence of Mrs. Agnew, the job of directing the group has been very ably taken over by Mrs. Tuffey. Through- out the year, the club has presented several Hne plays and skits for the enjoyment of the student body. Club First Row: .l. Ingle, L. Roberts. .l. Pearson, S. Arnold, J. Marmor, M. Football 19 0 Last fall West fielded one of the most powerful teams since football returned to the city schools. They opened the season with a hard-fought loss to Madison and spent the next few weeks pushing all opposition around like pretzels. The only break of the year came when Madison lost to Jefferson and we had to meet our rivals in a playoff game. Playing their best ball of the season, all of the breaks went the other way and we lost, which was an opportunity for Franklin since we were the most feared team in the loop then. Jerry QMagellanJ Donoghue, John Hurley, and Porker Nothnagle were all unanimous All-Scholastic choices. Jerry also beat out Madison's Mike Delgatti, last yearis honorary captain, for that spot. Bob Nothnagle, Bud Hakes, Gene Zielke, Gary Baron, Leo Torre, and the sensational sophomore fullback, Tom Kwapich, were also all-star choices. -A SCORES West West West West West West West West 6 32 25 0 12 38 6 30 . . . . . With a few breaks. which they didn't get, they Could have been quite a hit higher than the sixth plat-e tie with Edison. They were the first team to heat Jefferson, who was high on top of a six-game win streak and a sure bet for the champion- ship. The hooters were paced in the scoring depart- ment by junior Tom Jarvie, top point-getter in the league, by Boh Burke, and on defense by the out- standing goalie Don Boyd. Seniors Dick Beyers, HF. J. Flaherty, Joe Usselman, and Ben Dunlap held the team together with their consistent play. SOCCER SCORES West . . Madison 4 West . . Franklin 5 West . . Edison 4 West . . Marshall 4 W West . . Q-Bw ' X'v'fN.,-'Nr' Basketball 1950-51 The poor record of the basketball team this year could be attributed to two causes: inconsistent team play and a very low field goal average. It was noticeable throughout the season that the squad could hold its own, ever: with Madison, when working the ball in for that good shot or on defense. That shot was too often missed, and as a result West finished in a tie for sixth place. tt.-1 x mx Oil fi Nall WM West was able to boast this year of one of the league's outstanding centers in Vic Wescott. Vic earned an All-Scholastic second team center 6 Xt ll Q spot, which was great, considering the first team spot went to the sensational Ronnie Kilpatrick. Nick Ventrillo and Ron Walter also received Honorable Mentions. Vic Wescott was also elected captain for the year by the team. SCORES West ..... Batavia West . . . . Madison West . . . . Baseball 1950 The 1950 baseball team had a fairly successful year, but it didn't quite live up to pre-season expectations. Starling an all- under-classmen club, including three freshmen, Barney Smith couldnlt quite keep the boys at a steady pace. Pitcher Esty Reif- steck took the 4 and 4 decisions in league competition plus his win in the home and home series with Batavia. Gene Zielke took the Batavia loss. Bob Pilcher, Tom Kwapich, Chuck Shay, and Jerry Donoghue were the leading hitters and Chuck was chosen as All-Scholastic catcher. At the end of the season, short- stop Don Roth, a continual spark plug and a great defensive player, transferred to a Pennsylvania high school and West lost an outstanding three-letter man. With that one exception, great things should be expected in 1951, possibly a championship. SCORES West . . . ...... . . . . . Batavia West . . . Charlotte West . . . Jefferson West . . .
