Kates . . . . d ' ' VVilliam .l. Beahon A mserb When we of the .I une Class first entered West High School it was with the feeling that a new adven- ture awaited us. And indeed it did. Our first year we spent largely in trying to conceal our strangeness and our feeling of total insignifi- cance. We tried to pretend that it was all old stuff to usvand failed dismally in the effort. We en- deavored, Without much greater success, to adopt the casual, nonchalant manner we so much ad- mired in the Seniors. Few of us ever stayed after two thirty-five. Consequently, we remained very much like strangers in a strange land. Our second year brought a gradual change in us individually and in the class as a whole. We learned part of our Alma Mater and sang it with much gusto if not with understanding. We became affiliated with some of the extra-curricular activities and by so doing found that school could be made de- cidedly interesting. Through the medium of two class parties, we came to know each other better and to form many friendships. In other ways, too, we came to act more like a class unit. Gradually our hodge-podge existence disappeared and we became the Class of June, 1937. But our first two years merely laid the groundwork for our last and most enjoyed year. Now, in our more mature judgment, we came to look upon the faculty as somethings else than malicious con- spirators against our peace of mind and our leisure. We saw them as a group interested primarily in preparing youth for the tough sledding that lies ahead. Some of them we came to know individually and to value as friends and counselors. Friendships which had been developing through the years now crystallized and became very real. We finally learned the words of our Alma Mater and found that there was meaning behind the words. And now we are ready for graduation. We have learned much in our years at West and we have ab- sorbed much that we cannot exactly define but that has added immeasurably to our growth. Our hope now is that we may prove the faith manifested in us by our parents, teachers and friends has not been misplaced. UNE CLASS HISTORY
