Beahon A mserb When we of the .I une Class first entered West High School it was with the feeling that a new adven- ture awaited us. And indeed it did. Our first year we spent largely in trying to conceal our strangeness and our feeling of total insignifi- cance. We tried to pretend that it was all old stuff to usvand failed dismally in the effort. We en- deavored, Without much greater success, to adopt the casual, nonchalant manner we so much ad- mired in the Seniors. Few of us ever stayed after two thirty-five. Consequently, we remained very much like strangers in a strange land. Our second year brought a gradual change in us individually and in the class as a whole. We learned part of our Alma Mater and sang it with much gusto if not with understanding. We became affiliated with some of the extra-curricular activities and by so doing found that school could be made de- cidedly interesting. Through the medium of two class parties, we came to know each other better and to form many friendships. In other ways, too, we came to act more like a class unit. Gradually our hodge-podge existence disappeared and we became the Class of June, 1937. But our first two years merely laid the groundwork for our last and most enjoyed year. Now, in our more mature judgment, we came to look upon the faculty as somethings else than malicious con- spirators against our peace of mind and our leisure. We saw them as a group interested primarily in preparing youth for the tough sledding that lies ahead. Some of them we came to know individually and to value as friends and counselors. Friendships which had been developing through the years now crystallized and became very real. We finally learned the words of our Alma Mater and found that there was meaning behind the words. And now we are ready for graduation. We have learned much in our years at West and we have ab- sorbed much that we cannot exactly define but that has added immeasurably to our growth. Our hope now is that we may prove the faith manifested in us by our parents, teachers and friends has not been misplaced. Rulh Pearson ANUARY CLASS PROPHECY January 21, 1950 Dear Diary: What an event! What a night! The graduation class of January, 1937, held a reunion in the girls' gym, which certainly does not look anything like the one that stood when we were West High students. On the air-plane coming from Hollywood I met Louise Sabel, who is now script girl for RKO Radio Pictures, Phil Taylor, who is doing quite well as costume designer for MGM Studio, and Vay Stonebraker, whose third picture for Warner Brothers is to be released soon. Avery Zimmer was our pilot. As I entered the door, I overheard Betty Sulkey telling Mary Harding of her grand experiences as a hotel hostess. Mary also had much to say about going into a dress shop business with Jean Allen and Arline Bettin. Through conversation I learned that Stuart Forest, an outstanding archi- tect, is making the plans for Leslie Welleris new estate, and that Robert Williams and Herbert Clark have their law offices in the same building. It certainly seemed good to see Ruth King, who is a movie critic for The New York Times. Harold Harnish, sports editor of the Chicago News, and Robert Betette, owner of many champion race horses, seemed to be enjoying the cake made in Lorraine Leonard's bakery. Everyone is proud of Gordon Taylor because he was voted radio's best male singer. Dorothy Clark, Betty Buckley, Jean O'Brien, and Ruth Lutz are happy office girls. In a corner, I met some of the members of our former Tri-Y. Marjorie Odell told us that she en- joys her work as leader of the Y.W.C.A. I never thought that Jeanette Clark would be a nurse, because she was such a good writer. Frances Hunn is happily married, and Janet Lake is piano teacher at the Eastman School of Music. Florence Leavenworth showed us her book for which she won the Pulitzer prize. Dorothy Neracker is the president of the W.C.T.U., and Esther Miller is West High's best geometry teacher. Among the married people were the former Misses June Beattie, Ruth Conklin, Ann Jesserer, Elsie Herbert, Lucille Hardt, Janet Eshelman, Emile Curtice, and Madeline Nesbitt, also Francis Valerio, Joseph Jones, Maurice Whalley, and Richard Wyland. Nathan Kelne, the news commentator, gave an interesting speech. Jake Epner is another Ziegfeldg Joyce Amacher is a hair dresser, Leona Bandoly is a second Gladys Parker, Arline Haight can take a bow for being one of New York's most popular models, and Margaret Lewis is also in New York, living on Park Avenue. What a coincidence! Sweet Simonne Bergeron works behind a candy counter. Isabelle Watson, Ruth Pearson, Ethel Simes, Mary Tarlton, Robert Custer, Henry Boguski, Walter Witzel, and Charles Parcells are all members of West High's faculty. Genevieve Antonelli, who is a buyer for Edwards', told me that Betty Graves, Janet Lyons, and Norma Tucker are also employed at Edwards! How funny! Henrietta Partridge owns a chicken farm out in Henrietta. Remember Dizzy Dean? Well, Harry Faught has shattered all Dizzy's baseball records. Incidentally, Joe Smearing is the trainer of the St. Louis Cards. Many followers has Sarah Sosuloff, who writes Advice io the Lorelorn. Fred Newhall and Helen Cooper are both professors at the U. of R. Mary Jane Storm, who is starred on Donald F isher's variety program of the air, sang several songs for us, and Evelyn Rozzi of the concert stage also sang. William Davis, who is manager of the Na- tional Clothing Store, was talking business with Althea Schmidt, who is floor lady for F ormanis. Imagine! Marion Roach, a gardener, presented a pot of flowers to the person she thought was most successful, who was none other than Dr. Cecil Westfall. Grant Fisher has become a famous foot- ball coach at Princeton, and Don Sawyer is his right-hand man. Ruth Thoms, Doreen Williams, Grace Schroth, William Davis, and John O'Hara are all employees of Eastman Kodak. Madeleine Woock, a librarian, spent most of the evening chatting with Alice Stear, a dietitian, while Robert Bauerle and Donald Robertson, both prominent business men, got along nicely all evening. QContinued on page 1105 JUNE CLASS PROPHE It seems that when the class of June, 1937, graduated, a number of the budding geniuses of the group bought out the new twenty story addition to the Empire State Building. Most of the class took out offices and started in earnest on the road to success. Helen Shakeshaft and Jane Ladd, in company with Betty Jones and S'Babe Bettys, started the Short Wave Beauty Shoppe. Babe is particularly expert in applying mascara with a spray gun. Chuck Schafer, Dick Erbelding, and George Weinmann instituted Know Your Ball and Chain Week and had to rent an office from Bud Parcells in order to escape irrate and pacifically ardent honey-mooners. Clilemember, this is several years ahead of modern times.J Faith King and Alice Little have established 'iBachelor Girls' Hall in which they entertain only members of their own sex. Alice amuses strangers by her inimitable imitations of Don Irwin. Grace Mills, Jean McGee, and Barbara Beisert have inaugurated a Movie Lovers' Knitting Tea series in which Grace does the honors as chief cinema reviewer. Jean and Babs teach knitting and purling, respectively. Ruth Ober and Pauline Beuttel have an amateur broadcasting station IOTA, and feature flute and soprano solos on the alternate half hours. Jim Small, George Eike, and Slay 'Emw Wray are captains of sturdy 60-foot tugs on the canal and bitter rivalry exists among them. They hired Dave Williams, Milt Hubertus, and Bill Cham- bers as stokers, first class. The office whose gilt-edged, cut-glass panel is emblazoned with P. Boucher, M.D. sur- rounds the person of none other than the genial Bob. Smilingly complacent, he doesn't care who gets sick as long as they come to him. His motto is,HDon't get sick unless you can afford to pay me. He employs Helen Casey as private nurse to the Doe sextuplets, who were born and raised under his watchful guidance. Madge Walker and Marie Powell sweep up the office and try to keep things tidy. It is generally rumored that he purchases most of his supplies from the Bartholomay Bandage and Blanket Supply Housen because of his friendship for the president, Bob Bartholo- may, and the vice-president, Bob Smearing. The Schleyer Co. under the direction of Lucille is flourishing in its new headquarters on the fifth floor of the annex. The Company specializes in household poisons for the busy husband. Fred Walch is the chief customer and has just tucked his third away for keeps. UNE CLASS PROPHEC Chuck Wilkes has founded a school of physical education on the fourth floor and he tells us that his strength building class is by far the most popular. Among his pupils he numbers Chuck Larzelere, Norm Lewis, Bonnie Johnston, Art Berg, and Ray Love. Flo Dembeck has placed her- self under his tutelage to learn acrobatic tap dancing and is, he reports, making excellent pro- gress. Louise Gach and Sara Andolino have enrolled in the adagio class and are enjoying them- selves immensely. 1 From their improvised airport on a pent house roof those two daring aviators, Millie Tickell and Millie Deutsch, took off at dawn in a streamlined auto-gyro, bound for Cairo, Egypt, where they will make their first stop. They expect to meet Russ Kumbo's archeological party, consisting of Lib Whitney, June Thomsen, Maxine Garfinkle. and Rita Weingartnerg and to fly the group, in the rumble seat, to Rita Stutsman's pretentious home in the interior of Ethiopia. A tuxedo shop de luxe has been opened by Johnnie DeMers and Bob 0'Brien. They say they first attract customers by having Jane Smith and Jeanne Rayhill give a style show in the front window. If they Cthe prospectsj look once, they're as good as sold! An interesting exhibit was recently displayed by Doe Topham and Vet Toole. It was en- titled F ish through the Kitchen Sink and consisted of rare specimens of pisces caught by strain- ing faucet water from Lake Ontario. Later a baritone solo was sung by Bill Tew. It was rumored that Shirley McCandless and June Stevens have a pet shop at the end of the south corridor on the twelfth floor. Also well known is the fact that they are visited every so often by Erwin Fellows and Carl Proia, who bring large bundles of cheese for the tame mice. Hay Nash and Mary Ann Foley have teamed up, at the request of Mr. Gannett, and are now doing Butch and the Lads for the Times- Union, for which they send up a copy from New York every night at seven. Hav draws Butch, and can Mary Ann draw the lads! The office next to theirs is occupied by the most famous debating team in the country, Ward Worden and Art McCall. They had the room constructed of super sound-proof material, but they shouted so much that the janitor, Aaron Olk, was always busy picking up choice bits of conversa- tion that floated out. The humane work of the S.P.C.B.M. CSociety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Broken Matchesj is being admirably carried on by its co-founders, Eleanor McNamara and Evelyn Bose, with the aid of Betty Niles and Betty Beikirch as statisticians. They tell us that their most persistent of- fender is HGribby Gribbrock who is continually sapping the morale of broken matches by flicking them into the gutter. Chief among the auditors of the nation are keen-eyed Marion Garland and hawk-witted Frances Fay, who gave this statement to the press: Adding machines are out-of-date, and it is our unanim- ous opinion that colored beads are here to stay. Besides, think how much more the children like them. The Motor Cycle Riders of New York often hold meetings in the building under the guidance of Irene Gardner, who was recently elected president. For speed typing she recommends Ruth Harris, and as the type for anyone, she presents Muriel Haight. Jane Seemann and Doris Short disport themselves gracefully on the comptometers, while Bertha Zuber and June Walsh busy themselves with the interpreting of the hieroglyphics scrawled in haste by treasurer Herb Short Changei' Cham- berlain. A newspaper for the skyscraper is edited on scratch paper by Millicent Crandall. The star re- porter at present is June Heyden, who lugs Marion Lamb around as a stooge. As this is an all- woman staff, Alice Hunt and Bette Hebard were engaged as office boys to supplement the original personnel. The literary editor, Eileen Smith, is usually to be found leaning back in a swivel chair with her feet on the desk, muttering under her breath, 6'Me Hercule, in an imploring tone. Al- though Rita Nellis and Jeanne Hewitt had had no previous experience, they were engaged imme- diately as echange editors, in preference to Sandy Rowe and Sedge Fetter, who applied for the job. Jean Hill and Ruth Heidrick are conducting a table tennis tournament, just for the fun of it. Chief among the contestants are Marge Ford and Ruth Berkowitz, who will soon meet in the finals. No opposition was strong enough to defeat that invincible doubles team, Norm Andersen and Don Cain who carried off top honors in their division. They have been challenged recently by Gene Rash and Hal Morgan, the Singin' Swattersf' and it looks as if an interesting match will result. Jim Scobell is the head of a tie-manufacturing concern with offices on the thirteenth floor, and he is afraid that business is in a knot. He also says that his chief worries are the vice-president, Dave Paigeg the business manager, Ed Johnsong and rug-pacer Ray Skuse, who is wearing them all out. Catherine Morriessey, who was general chairman of the reunion program, told me that Ethel Simes is living in Chicago, where her husband is manager of a large toy factory, and that William Bourne and Frank Schmitt are officers in the army. I was happy to know that our class is so prosperous, and it was a pleasure to see everyone. The aim of this organization is to acquaint the mem- bers with some of the helpful and common facts in the different branches of this sub- ject. Faculty Adviser CHESS CLUB The Chess Club is composed of students interested in playing chess. Under the able leadership of Mr. J affray, the club has achieved the aim of teaching the students a better understanding of the royal game of chess. The club is unique in the one re- spect that it seeks no support from anyone, there are no dues. The officers of the club are: Charles Parcells, President, Bob Bingham, Vice-Presidentg Fred Newhall, Secretaryg Aaron Olk, Publicity Manager. LES ASPIRANTS This club has existed, with interruptions, since 1918 and without interruptions for ten years. It was formerly known as Le Cercle Francais but recently adopted the name, Les Aspirants, because it existed mainly for those students who aspire to greater heights in understanding and speaking French. The meetings are varied and often consist of a French play, marionette show, lecture, and once a term an initia- tion. At each meeting French songs are sung and, on special occasions, refreshments are served. The officers this term are: Millicent Crandall, Presidenteg Jane Ladd, Vice-Presidenteg Ura Mae Munro, Secretaire. OPTIMATES In Latin, the Optimates were the higher class of people. It is from this origin that the name of the Latin honor society in West High is derived. lts officers also are C L U B named according to old Roman days. This year they are: Bernice Snyder, First Consul, Richard Tullis, Second Consul, Frank Phillips, Aedileg Alvin Gresens, Assistant Aedileg 'Ura Mae Munro, Scribag Esther Lipsky, Quaestorg Alice Little, Nuntius. The meetings during the term consist of an initiation, a lecture, a play, or some other type of interesting program. THE DEBATING CLUB The West High School Debating Club was organized in 1931 when Mr. Spinning was principal. lts purpose is to provide training for its members in the art of debat- ing, through the planning and conducting of timely debates every two weeks. Oc- casionally the club conducts an assembly debate. Qualifications for membership insist only that the student have a genuine interest in learning the art of debating and be willing to take a part in a portion of the de- bating conducted. Mr. Lockwood, of the History Department, is the club's faculty adviser. The officers this year are: President, Donald Cain, Vice-President, William Roach, Sec- retary, Robert Murphy. THE STAMP CLUB The West High Stamp Club was organized in 1935 by the present chairman, Alvin Cresens and Frank S. Phillips, with Mrs. Lyman as its faculty adviser. This year Mr. Stowell is the faculty adviser and besides the chairman, The Stamp Club has a secretary, Edward Lechinger. During the term they have special programs such as, out-side speakers, stamp auctions, contests, talks with slides, parties and the like. To create a spirit of friendliness and a knowledge of the history of stamps, is the purpose of this organization. SOCK AND BUSKIN CLUB Due to the condition of our stage and the absence of our dramatic teacher, Donald E. Keyes, the Sock and Buskin Club has been totally inactive this term. It was in the September term of 1931 that the Sock and Buskin Club was origi- nated by Mr. Keyes. At that time, memberships in the organization were obtained by students interested in drama, competing against each other in various tests of fgiamatic ability. Now the members are chosen directly from the Advanced Drama asses. The purpose of this club is to instigate a feeling of general knowledge of drama into the minds and souls of the members. I t also provides entertainment for the school, in the form of various assembly programs and evening performances. The officers this year are: President, George Cundellg Vice-President, Vay Stone- brakerg Secretary, Pauline Beuttelg and Council Representative, Nathan Kelne. THE RIDING CLUB In 1932, under the student direction of Robert Bettete, the West High School Riding Club was organized. For four years, up until the present term, this club ex- isted without a faculty adviser. But at present, Mr. Ross and Mr. Naramore are the club's faculty heads. The purpose of the Riding Club is to instill in its members a true love of the sport of horseback riding and fair play. To qualify for membership in this organization it is necessary to do one thing, that is, a person must come out and ride three times with the club within one month. This group is faced with the task of advancing the standards of the musi- cal organizations in West High School. That their efforts have enjoyed considerable success is evidenced by the high favor in which our Music Department is held throughout the city. USIC COUNCIL I A T H L E T I C S With the opening of the 1936 soccer season West had little chance to duplicate the record of the strong 1935 team, which romped away with the silver cup. The task of rebuilding a team riddled by graduation was no new job to Coach Herbert Smith, who has tutored the Orange and Black through many a tough season. The lettermen left from last year were Dick Williamson, Don Robertson, and William Cummings. Through the efforts of these men and bolstered by a crop of willing ma- terial, the squad weathered the first half of the campaign and then with experience behind them drove forward to win four of the last live games and to tie the fifth. Although the title was not retained, the true Occidental spirit was very much in evidence. Opponents Wes! They ended the season in second place, after a hard fought battle with Madison for the city cham- pionship. No story would be complete without special mention of Don Auten and Neil Fisher who attained All-Scholastic standings. With the West High basketball tossers riddled by graduation last June, Ronny Johnston and Dick Williamson will be the only veterans returning to the hard wood this year. Werner, Garfolo and Spencer qualified for and ran in the Sectionals. Al Werner scored seconds in both the broad jump and shot put, while Don Spencer, finishing second in the 880-yard run, unoificially broke the school record for that event. The lean years have been devoted to building up new teams that have been punctured by either graduation or ineligibility. The 1936 team faced a lean year. Coach Emil Hulek, hampered by Weather conditions and the lack of a practice field, was faced with the problem of rounding out a nine to encounter experienced teams on the schedule. The first of the season gave little encouragement, inasmuch as these six games were setbacks. From then on, the old characteristics of the Orange and Black paved the way to several victories. The nine ended well down in the circuit but produced material for 1937. Every one of you can be a loyal member of the AAX by simply having been in West High School for one year, and by having satisfactory attendance in four sports. You, too, can earn a duplicate award by earn- ing points in the sports in which you are interested. Every organization has a purpose, and we think our aim is a worthy one. We work to develop the finest type of girl and strengthen her character-a girl ready to face life with a sporting chance to win. You can be this girl with a little effort, and by giving us an opportunity to prove that buried deep in you are the possibilities for this ideal girl. Here are our sports: Tennis! One hundred and forty girls can't be wrong about this game. They must be really interested in the sport to join in the fun every spring and fall. Baseball, in the balmy days of spring, and basketball, when the wintry winds begin to blow, awaken your love of sports. We'll see you at the basketball banquet held at the end of the season. Hockey, with eleven of our older girls on each team, makes an exciting game, while little sister does her bit on the fieldball team.
