Nebraska The new high school originally approved in 1971 Past Dreams Become Present Realities Inside the gym In 1965. West Point citizens turned down plans to build a new junior-senior high school building. In 1968. a second attempt failed in the voting booths. At last, in October 1971 voters approved plans to give West Point a badly needed, larger and more modern public high school. The school, after many changes in the original plans, will look different from the architect's drawing on this page, and the inside room arrangements will be very different. With opening day set for the 1974-1975 school year, these pictures, taken in May 1973, showed that the dreams were really coming true. Pointer Staff Puts Much Time IntoPaper Interviewing students and faculty, writing and typing copy, drawing headlines, running the mimeograph machine and finally stapling the paper together were all involved in meeting the Wednesday deadline. If that sounds like a lot of work, you're right. Trying to put out a paper a week, plus a special senior edition, kept the staff hopping most of the year. A journalism class was set up for the purpose of producing the WEST POINTER, but as the staff found out; it took much more than just class time to meet the deadline. 64 Student Council--First Row: Bill Wimmer, Bob Moodie, Kurt Maack. This year’s Student Council was the first to serve under the new constitution that gave equal representation to all classes and established the office of President-Elect. This ended the former control of the council by the seniors and provided for training next year’s leader. The council sponsored the annual watermelon feed, Christmas film and caroling in the halls, and the Spring Day activities. It gave free popcorn to the students at the Christmas film free pop to the visiting Stage Bands and Swing Choirs, and free dances to the students. The council was instrumental in creating the student lounge and in several changes in school procedures. At the end of the year, the members gave Fred Wieneke, custodian, a gift in appreciation for his services to the council and the school. This year's chief organizer of E-Day was senior Patti Freudenburg. As a sidelight to the planning for E-Day.
