indecisiveness over the mini and maxi of it all found American women dressed in pantsuits as a compromise. At year's end it looked like the mini would survive. Tall and green-eyed Miss Puerto Rico captivated the judges and New York City in winning the Miss Universe title. This demonstrator of the opposite sex saw a little bit of good for all in the women's liberation drive. Tom Dempsey of pro-football's New Orleans Saints kicked a record 62-yard field goal against Detroit. Death claimed two prominent figures in world politics, former president Charles DeGaulle of France and Egypt's president Gamal Nasser. National guardsmen were called to Kent State University to quell campus disorders. Fou-students were killed in the encounter. Frank Winter gave the class message and the Swing Choir sang “School Days” and “The Other Man’s Grass is Always Greener” in honor of the occasion. On Wednesday, May 19, Commencement exercises were held for the 61 seniors. Ron Feyerherm and Jeff Lindberg gave the honor addresses. The band, along with the seven graduating bandsmen, played “Theme and Rock Out” as a last tribute. The address “Difficulty in Being Young Today” was given by the University of Nebraska’s Dr. Prichard, and the diplomas were presented by the President of the School board, Dr. Ericson. With a small amount of sadness and a great deal of joy, the Seniors walked down the aisle for the last time as classmates and students of WPHS. 23 Graduation Pomp and Circumstance a handful of reminders soon to be a memory gifts and congratulations awaiting the processional Gold Cords for Honor Society Undergrads Glen Abrahams Ted Daberkow Carol Albertsen Denise Da Moude Clark Bettenhausen Kim Daugherty Greg Bogseth Mike DeBacker Glenda Burg Tom Connor Tom Douglas Dennis Drieling A Fabulous Junior Year Janet Frink Ken Gelster Diane Geu Gary Glissman Carolyn Flores Marilyn Flores 26 Changing County Government Day parties as well as the format of the prom are a few of the changes accomplished by the Junior Class. The prom, having the theme of “A Night in Las Vegas,” was divided into three rooms instead of the customary one room. The Liberal Party replaced the Nationalists as the second party to the Federalists. Fervent activities preceded the election which made the task of choosing candidates even harder. Strange Japanese muttering accompanied the Juniors as they prepared for the Junior Class Play. ‘‘Teahouse of the August Moon,” which was put on two nights instead of the customary one, was directed by Miss Shalander. Problems in American History came as a refreshing difference in the regular format of teaching with Mr. Black’s new inquiry method. Given a broad topic, the class decided what they wanted to learn on the subject. Using their own initiative they did research and then discussed it in class. Choosing a class ring became a hard decision as each member was left on his own to decide the shape and color of his ring. Class Officers: Peg Hartman. It left them Biology with Mr. Christensen, Typing with Mr. Prazak, English with Miss Raduenz, Driving for Mr. Brodhagen, and the punishment of Mr. Christensen’s and Miss Sawyer’s P.E. classes. Unlike previous years, the Sophomore class chose their class rings instead of waiting till they are Juniors. All four losses were to Cornhusker Foes and only two of those teams were also Husker members, thus placing West Point second in Husker play and sixth in the Cornhusker race. Coach Brodhagen, in his second year as head man was assisted by Ron Cornwell and Jim Christensen. The Cadets continued their jinx over Tekamah-Herman and and avenged last year’s defeat by beating Lyons. The big win over Wisner-Pilger in the final game was probably the most satisfying. The Cadets ranked sixth in the Norfolk Daily News. Dennis Broekemeier dominated the Cadet statistics in individual scoring with an average of better than 20 points per game, and a one game total of 31 points. He was 54% from the field and led in the number of rebounds. Dennis was named a member of the Fremont All-Area All Class, Cornhusker All Conference, Norfolk Top Twenty, and 2nd team All-State. Jim Engelbart was the second high scorer and held the free throw percentage lead for the third straight year. Jim was named Fremont All-Area Class C-2nd team, and Cornhusker All-Conference. 40 Jeff Lindberg--Guard Kim Wagner--Forward Dennis Broekemeier--Forward Leadership To WIN Hal Wagner was near the top in several categories including third in scoring and second in rebounding. Kim Wagner was one of the better defensive players and ball handlers. He served as the team quarterback setting up the offense and leading the fast-break. He was named Cornhusker honorable mention as a guard. Nathan Predoehl, a short center at 6’0”, rebounded with authority with a 7.1 per game average. Larry Maas, the tall man of the squad at 6’3” shared the center duties with Nathan. Jeff Lindberg provided bench strength for the Cadets. Stutzman placed third in the triple jump while K. Meier brought home a fourth in the pole vault. H. Wagner proved to be third best in the discus. D. Da Moude received a third in the two mile run, R. Wagner came in fourth in the high hurdles, and R. Schmidt and L. Adams placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 440 yd. dash. The 880 and mile relay teams came in second while the two-mile team placed third. Stiff competition and cold, rainy weather made things diffi -cult for the stars at state. J. Engelbart, however, did bring home some points, placing third in the Class C mile run. Slate Qualifier--Jim Stutzman went to state after qualifying in the long jump and the 100 yd. dash. State Qualifier--Dennis Broekemeier qualified in the shot put. State Qualifiers--Kenton Meier competed in the 120 yd. high hurdles while Gale Slagel participated in the 180 yd. low hurdles. No. 1 Track Team The track team this year led off March 30 with a win over Wisner-Pilger and Central Catholic in the triangular meet held at Wisner. The Bergan Invitational came next, and West Point placed eighth in a field of 20. The Cadets bettered their posi -tion ten days later when they attended the Blair Invitational and took home a seventh out of 20. On April 16, the track men demolished Oakland-Craig 105 to 49 at Oakland. With only three days to rest, the Cadets finished third among eight in the Corn-husker meet. Anxious to prove their mettle, the cindermen romped to a first place victory in the tri-angluar meet with Logan View and Wisner-Pilger. Again with only three days rest, the Cadet team dropped a dual to North Bend. The team came back to take second place in a field of 11 at the Wisner-Pilger Invitational. They went on to take a third at the Husker Conference meet May 13. There were 16 schools in attendance at that meet. The future looked bright for the track team next year because the freshman team won the freshman Cornhusker and Husker track meets. State Qualifier--Jim Engelbart qualified for state in the mile run with a time of 4:34:9, a new school record. State Qualifier--Hal Wagner qualified in two events, the 220 yd. and the 440 yd. dashes. At the same time, decorating the gym consumed several hours for the committee members. The paint brush was in constant action for almost every football player and several teachers’ cars were painted with signs and slogans. Class representatives were kept a secret this year. Only the attendants knew they were to be called forward. Homecoming celebrations were climaxed by the crowning of the King Jim Engelbart, and the Queen Kathy Reppert. The play was a three-act comedy written by John Patrick and directed by Miss Shalander. The play took place in Okinawa right after World War .II. The American soldiers who were stationed on Okinawa tried to Americanize a small Okinawan community. Colonel Purdy III (Gary Retzlaff) sent Captain Fisby (Jim Stutzman) with Sakini (Bill Mowinkel) to try to change the citizens of Tobiki to the modern way of life. Laughter broke out when Fisby became converted to their way of living and in so doing brought the village out of poverty with the building of the teahouse. A struggle between Purdy and the high command commenced, resulting first in the destruction and finally in the rebuilding of the questionable establishment. In all, it was a fun-filled evening’s entertainment. Pain Makes Man Think Thought Makes Man Wise Wisdom Makes Life Endurable’’ Boy. did that hit the spot! Are Teachers Human?” This was a play with a difference in that the emphasis was on the teachers rather than the students. The students included Lisa Felton (B. Daberkow) and Suzanne Hart (S. Schellenberg,) two seniors who had been carrying a feud for four years; Hortense Anderson (R. Olson,) an intellectual; PuddenheadPye(N. Predoehl,) the football hero; and several others. The action centered on Edward Fowler (M. Iden) and Arbutis Meadows (0. Behling.) Fowler was the young and new principal at WP, and Arbutis was the equally new English teacher. They were both determined to win success in their new posts. The complications began when Arbutis selected as the Senior Play a “poetic” tragedy written in free verse. Further com-lications arose from the triangle-like situation among Fowler, Arbutis, and Dolores Stone (V. Neeman,) daughter of C. Solomon Stone (D. Schwinck,) head of the local school board. Also competing for Arbutis’s attention was the foot ball coach Mike Lang (J. Engelbart) who went to great lengths to keep Puddenhead eligible for the team. These threads were skillfully woven into an entertaining evening for the audience. 62 “Edward--we're engaged now!” Cast Of Sr. Play Betty Gregg . . . . Liza Felton .... Suzanne Hart . . . The music department of WPHS presented Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” on March 5-6, 1971. The story was about a traveling salesman, Harold Hill, who tried to sell the people of River City, Iowa, band instruments with the intention of skipping town before he taught anyone to play them. His plans changed, however, as he fell in love with Marian Paroo, the local music teacher. He was exposed as a fraud and even he was surprised when his band was able to play using his imaginary think system. The play was directed by Miss Susan Baumann and Mr. Mike Lamberty. Memories Preserved On Paper Annuals are memory books and the staff had its share of activities to remember. There was the concession shack at the football field with hot pop soaking everyone and dropped hotdogs quickly cleaned up for the customers. The stand at the basketball games was sometimes on the main floor, sometimes in the basement, and some-tines the staff couldn’t find it. There were night meetings with little work and a lot of fooling around. So--long after the end of school, a handful of students struggled to finish the annual. As usual, they were way behind schedule. By June 1, when the 100 pages should have been in the hands of the publisher, the staff finished the 76th page-only 24 more to go. Cadet Staff--First Row: R. This printer enabled the staff to liven the paper with pictures. The staff’s long hours after school and in the evenings produced nine issues of the paper. The publications highlighted were: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, April Fools Day, and Easter. Once again, the Freshman English class took a turn at producing a paper and learning first hand the problems and work involved. The final Graduation issue proved to be the most challenging. A surprise taco party was held on May 2nd for Miss Raduenz. She will be greatly missed next year by the staff. New Printer For WEST POINTER West Pointer Staff--Seated; J. Jahnke. A. Grieser. E-Day represents youth’s concern for preserving the beauty of the Earth and its Ecology. As a result, about 260 students and 20 teachers worked over 1,000 man hours, kept ten pick-ups busy running over 60 truck-loads of trash to the city dump. Probably more than $1,600 worth of labor was expended in making West Point a cleaner, less polluted city. Industrial Arts Fair On April 29, 30, and May 1, West Point hosted the second Industrial Arts Fair. Four hundred seventy one projects were exhibited from participating schools around the area. Exhibits included divisions in woodworking, leather, plastics, electricity, metal etching, mechanical and architectural drawing. Trophies and ribbons were awarded on the basis of ingenious and outstanding craftsmanship and on superior, excellent, good, and honorable mention ratings. The fair contained both junior and senior high divisions. The over-all grand prize winner for the best project exhibited went to Dale Wordekemper (above) for his zebra wood stereo. He received the top 3 trophies of the Fair plus the Gold Hammer award for being the outstanding student of the West Point shop classes. Dale also built a walnut stereo writing desk of his own design. The piece won him honors in the national Stanley Tools contest and was shipped to Connecticut for national competition where it won second place. Larry Stigge (left) received the top honors in the junior high division. Other West Point winners were: Ron Greckel, drafting: Mike Chadek, drafting; Robin Rush, woods; and Ray Wagner, woods. 70 Organizations Pep Club--Pom Pom Girls: M. Weeks, C. Meyer, P. Hartman. J. Memories tend to be enjoyable, since we fortunately are more likely to remember the happy experiences of life than those which have led to frustrations. We would hope, too, that most of your high school experiences have been enjoyable ones. We cannot, however, live on memories. Memories are valuable when they remind us of the deep commitments we have made, of the vision we have had concerning our place in life, and of the friends who have inspired us. Such memories can be a constant spur to accomplishment and to highest living. We hope that the memories induced by this book will be happy ones and that they will be reminders of that which is fine, and noble, and good in life. 98 Autographs Apollo 13 returned safely after an inboard explosion crippled the craft enroutt to the Moon.
