CADET BAND At 8:00 each morning throughout the school year the haunting refrains of the West Point High School Cadet Band could be heard floating through the building. In rain or shine forty-six faithful music lovers trudged to school at this early hour for daily practice. The Cadet Band, composed of both high school and grade pupils, was under the direction of Mr. Guy Swanson. The majorettes, who led the band and also performed between halves of several basketball games, were Joyce Stratton and Mary Jean Leisy. After summer performances at the Scribner and West Point fairs and the plow-terrace contest, the “Cadets” settled down to hard work. Before football games they led the Pep Club and student body down town where rallies were held and marched between halves of the games, keeping school spirit soaring high. At our homecoming celebration the Cadet Band played an important role in the ceremony to crown the queen. In October they traveled by bus to Lincoln and had the thrill of participating, together with over sixty other high school bands, in Band Day at the University of Nebraska. The annual district music contest at Wayne in April, toward which all their efforts had been directed, proved to be one of the most important events of the year for the band members. A trip to Norfolk in May to hear the Navy Band was also as exciting as could be. As rumors of the long-awaited, new uniforms becoming a possibility in the near future echo through the halls, we leave this ambitious group; but we shall take with us the memory of the important role they played in the drama of this school year.
