Senior Synopsis The curtain has fallen on the last act of an action-packed drama at West Point Public School for the thirty members of the Class of ’50. On the eve of Commencement they took their final bow. Eight of these thirty—Bonnie Meier, Darleen Luehring, Donna Beckenhauer, Myrtle Sila, Ronald White, Donald Johnson, Jim Peatrowsky, and Carol Swanson—shyly made their debut together on a bright September morning back in 1938. Here they received their first training under the patient guidance of Miss Carmen Kase. In the Fourth grade, Miss Rier was kept busy collecting notes written in Pig Latin which was the fad of the time. It was in May 1946 that the eighth graders proudly received their diplomas. They had passed their first mark with flying colors! In the fall of 1946, forty-three lowly boys and girls entered the halls of West Point Public School once again, anxiously awaiting their chance to play bigger, better roles in high school. Although looked upon as underclassmen, the freshmen played an active part in band, athletics, vocal groups, and declam. They were also quite active in their social activities in an exclusively Sub-Deb Club which was formed and was active during the second semester. Through their sophomore SECOND SEMESTER OFFICERS: Robert Hasebroock, Presi-dent; Jim Peatrowsky. Treasurer; Helen Humrich. Secretary: Orville Dahl. Vice President. FIRST SEMESTER OFFICERS: Donna Beckenhauer, Treas- urer; Barbara Bartak. Secretary: Hyle Hensel. Student Council Member; Helen Humrich, Vice President: Fern Schmidt, President. year, they continued to show active participation in all extra-curricular activities. Jo Ann Jones received a piano audition from a French concert pianist and composer and was offered a trip to Europe to study. It was in this year that the class could boast of many outstanding performers. Among these was Bob Hasebroock who made his first showing as the “school orator” by entering the American Legion Oratorical Contest, only to win local and district contests three years in succession, and take third, second, and at last, in his senior year, first place at the State contest. On November 16, 1948, the class having now advanced to juniors, presented their first play, “One Wild Night”; and in January, the long-awaited class rings were received. In the following months their thoughts turned to plans for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The “49ers” was the theme chosen for the banquet and although it was hard work, the banquet proved to be enjoyable for everyone. Fern Schmidt represented the class at Girls’ State and was elected the Governor’s secretary. When September, 1949, rolled around, thirty-three students now found themselves as seniors in W.P.H.S. Now they were the leaders—the main stars! Memories of being measured for caps and gowns, having graduation pictures taken, and the class parties and picnics of all four years will be cherished in their hearts and minds forever. Page 15
