SENIOR HISTORY On May 26 the forty one members of the class of 49 wfll TSCGIVS the1r dtplomas and go forth as the alumnl of West Pomt Hxgh School Let s look back on those twelve memorable years of school lt was rn September of l936 that a small group of youngsters shyly and tearfully entered Mrss Kose s room Her pat1ent and lnndly ways however soon calmed the1r fears and they were well launched on the1r school careers The frrst couple of years passed very qutckly When the class was 1U the thzrd grade a freckle faced red hatred g1rl 1o1'1ed the ranks She proved to be quxte a 1olt but was soon accepted lnto the QCIUQ Somewhere along the l1ne a group of g1rls formed the very select GS fGenu1ne Skunkl club No one has ever ftgured out the exact purpose of the secret club but rt was fun anyway ln the stxth grade the class drscovered that Betty Stratton was qulte a slugger More than one member of the class fell before her mtghty ftsts It was durmg thts year also that a number of chlldhood romances had the1r be g1nn1ng Perhaps the best of all were the Dorner lones and the Watson Iohnson affatrs In the elghth grade the class suffered a severe blow the Casa nova of the class fD1ck LEISYD moved to Flrrzona only to return two years later T1me slrpped by qulckly and one n1ce mght tn May the members of the class recelved the1r elghth grade dtplomas They were now ready to leave lad dxsh thlngs beh1nd and advance to somethrng really brg htgh school The followmg September the class of 49 entered the halls of WPHS as very lnnocent Frosh Rl though they were deprlved an 1n1t1at1on they lxved rn constant fear of it anyway The sophomore year SECOND SEMESTER OFFICERS were Ray How ard vfce presxdent Kenneth Dorner presx dent Bob Watson treasurer Paul Woerner secretary FIRST SEMESTER OFFICERS were loe Ierman vxce presxdent Wxllxam Prrebnow secretary Dale Harmsch presldent Elmlra Hoetfelker treasurer proved a lxttle dull for there were no really blg events and the excttement of hxgh school had worn off But there was bxology of course that provrded lust lots of new experlences such as dlssectxng worms and grasshoppers The 1un1or year proved to be a dlrect contrast to the sophomore one On November 17 the rumors presented the1r class play The Funny Brats to a record crowd To the surprrse of the play cast and dlrector the play was a huge success Much later ln the year the 1un1ors honored the senlors wlth the annual Junxor senior banquet The theme of the ban quet was Flstronomy and proved to be a very beautl ful settlng for a banquet Hll through hxgh school the class of 49 was actrve tn mustc dramatrcs and sports The boys 1n the class will be greatly mtssed on both the basketball and football teams Thus the class went forward unttl fmally rt reached 1ts top year and when the school bell called them to the1r studxes ID September of 48 nlne of them were begxnnlng the1r twelfth year of school to gether Those who have been able to endure each other all through school were Hrdene Clausen Ioe Ierman Ray Howard Harnet Iones Bonnre McPher son Mary Lou Solfermoser Bob Watson Betty Strat ton and Paul Karnrath Thxs year sped by even more qulckly than the other three The seniors started the school act1v1t1es by sponsorlng the fxrst school dance The senlor class play was presented to a huge crowd on Hprrl 28 and of course lfke the yumor play 1t was wonderful Thls year they were the honored guests at the Junlor senxor banquet Rnd so 1t goes another semor class and another four years of fun and hard work behlnd them On May 26 when the en1ors hold the1r Commencement let us hope that each will go forward mto a future of securlty and well bemg Page 15 1 ' 1 1 . . . . 1 t . .
