6 IN 1519, THE BOLD and inspiring Cortez and his Spaniards reached the valley where Mexico City lies today. There he met and conquered the great Montezuma, king of the Aztecs, Emperor of the Nahua nation, protector of a huge and wondrous fortune. The successful expedition of Cortez is symbolic of the four years a student at West spends, leaving triumphant at graduation, having gained the riches of knowledge. Only the intriguing legends and colorful drawings of the vanished Aztec culture, which are in interpreted throughout the book, remains. A huge calendar carved on 20 tons of stone is the historic relic represented on the cover of the 1956 Westerner. In the center is the face of the Sun God, which can be comparedto a year's activities at West. The concentric circles of symbols tell the Aztec myths of the creation and destruction of thegworld.
