Neulighc The theme of your Yearbook eminently sym- bolizes the age in which we live. This is the era of man's conquest of space-of journeys to air's outer edge, of flights to Mars and perhaps a land- ing upon the moon. The slay, no longer serene, now stirs with the hum of aircraft streaking across its face at speeds too fast for IT121IliS re- flexes to control. But the limitations of human sight and action present no obstacle. Confronted with a problem of great magnitude, man's inven- tive genius has created radar, thereby making possible continuous observation and contact with these space-ships. Today, unmanned satellites study the earth as Well as nearby space. Tomorrow they may per- chance orbit the moon or embark upon totally new areas of exploration. Tomorrow, human beings on journeys into space may see the moon at relatively close range, observing the fine details of its surface unblurred by the turbulence of the atmosphere. That people will some day fly into outer space is well within the realm of possibility. The spirit of human adventure cannot be suppressed, no matter what the hazard, no matter what the cost. The marvels of the space age are just beginning to unfold. lntercontinental jets are now on scheduled flights. Tomorrow, interplanetary travel! l litcl1 your wagon to a star, and Climb aboard. The slty's the limit! Yours for an exciting future, J! The student court, commonly known as the Tribunal, meets every morning to pre- scribe punishment for any student violating the rules set by the school constitution. It also has the power, with the consent of the director of student activities, to impeach student officers. Although complicated legal procedures are not employed, the de- fendant receives a fair and just trial. All decisions must be agreed upon by a two- thirds vote of the staff. Consisting of six members-two twelve A's and four twelve B's-one of whom is the Chief Justice, Beverlee BC.l1'lI'1.'lIT1 the Tribunal helps make NVestern .1 safe and orderly school. One of the divisions of the executive branch of the XVest Philadelphia High School Citizens Association is the Attorney General Staff. Working in connection with the Tribunal and the Patrol System, this staff interviews all offenders reported by student patrols, reviews their cases, and brings out all facts, for and against, in order that the students may have a chance to defend themselves. Should a student plead not guilty, a trial is arranged. It is then the role of this or- ganization to provide defense and prosecut- ing attorneys to assure the defendant of a fair trial. Jeanette Floyd, captain, and Carmella Peters, ser- geant, put the twenty-two girls through their paces in the marching and rifle drills. Seventeen girls in blue uniforms, and five in orange, all wearing white gloves and white boots with blue tassels, constitute the snappy guard who show off the outfits to perfection. The girls in orange, who carry the flags, actually are the color guard, while the girls in blue are the drill team. I 5? ,za . .. Go, Western, Go! Front Row: Bcrsitsky, Budnick. This year, the band's marching was greatly im- proved, thanks to frequent drilling by Mr. Sam Fogel. These musicians played at the Inter- Scholastic football game in December, along with all the school bands in the city. Members of the orchestra often switch over to band instruments in order to be in the troupe. Among these are Robert Joell, a gradu- ating seniorg Sherman Leis and Harold Cole- man of the All-Philadelphia High School Orchestra, and Adrienne Ledger, who is in the All-City High School Band. UMM Snappy Precision This lively squad of hoorah girls plays a large part in stirring up school spirit. Headed by Judith Budnick, captain, and Barbara Bersitsky, co-captain, they have spent 'many hours, during and after school, in training and strenuous practice. The results are the near-perfect cheers that are delivered at every football and basket- ball gamc, as well as in the all-important pep-rally assemblies. Under the capable guidance of Miss Elizabeth Davis, they have inspired Western's teams to aim at victory. K Q 1, SS A Rx, X . ia A 3 - -E . . 4 V X fy f f, Y' ' af-W f ffl? 4 315 . , fi f L 6 ,, K . No matter how hard the task, Mrs. Kirk has helped the class reach its goal. Her guidance has made many activities possible. It is largely due to her persistence that the Senior Prom was held at the new Sheraton Hotel. Mrs. Kirk gets enjoyment from just having gen- eral conversations with her students. Her under- standing can make one feel a lot better after talking to her. Although this is the first class she has spon- sored, she has done a professional job. Because of her sincere friendliness, everyone in the class will think of her with love and respect, always. Miss Ruth Ansley, of the Commerce Department. became our financial sponsor at the beginning of IIB. This job included the collection of class dues and arrangements for the senior prom and luncheon. We have found Miss Ansley a valuable companion whom we can depend on for guidance. Miss Ansley worked closely with Mrs. Kirk and the class ollicers. She also supervised various special money-making projects to add funds to our year- book and class treasury. Among the projects under- taken hy our class was the selling of jewelry and tllirisimas cards. ln all, the advice and assistance of our linancial sponsor were very iiiipgi-ram, Now, at the close of our final semester at NY'estern, we wish to express our appreciation to Miss Ansley for the m.iny hours of hard work she gave unspar- ingly to help us have a successful term. He is also Post Adjutant of the Russell Conwell American Leg- ion Post. The coach of the Color Guard and the Cheerleaders is Miss Davis. Proof of her ability is the spirited cheering at games, and the precise timing of the Color Guard. Mr. Shapiro, who teaches basic law, was for many years the coach of the swimming team. A home economics teacher and fash- ion coordinator, Mrs. Convery inspires in the girls of the school a sense of good grooming. i These are the senior advisers to whom the members of the graduating class have looked for guidance. Their coun- sel has given wings to the class of January 1959. Book 4 Miss Davis Alkgrwlxy xffiirf' in-af' - I Book 5 Mr. Shapiro . gg' it ., :is f- we K - -111: 1.5 'E' Y ' . 9 I . .. ,. . . 2 2' A . One afternoon in February, 1956, when other flights were grounded by unfavorable weather, a group of fliers entered training school. This was XVest Philly, the base of preparations for the flight into the world. The weather didn't influence the atmosphere inside, however, for these novices were welcomed warmly by all, including the morale-lifting class mascot, Silly Philly. After the summer, everyone returned for the Hrst take-off-the zoo trip. However, due to the capers of the previous class, this flight was can- celled. Undaunted, the class went on. They elected Lauretta Jones class chairman, and she began a career of unselfish service to her class. As the junior year approached, the students grew Laurctta, Mrs. Kirk, and Ella-ll-B. confident because skillful sponsors Mrs. Elizabeth Kirk and Miss Ruth Ansley, took the controls. The 11A class show was presented to the new cadets and the response strengthened determina- tion to continue. 11B arrived, and everyone again anticipated the initial flight. But another gloomy atmosphere- due to an empty class treasury, cancelled the flight to Valley Forge. Although disappointed, the fliers vowed to try again and soon were engaged in senior year prepa- rations. During this year, these fliers would be given their most important tests. To cheer every- one, Silly Philly distributed pins, adorned with his smiling countenance-just the thing to brighten dampened spirits. ll-B Class Show Group S Top Ad-Getters led by Steve Saks. May was approaching. May, the month in which the most desired flight was scheduled-the XVest Point trip. On May 23, the class, accom- panied by teachers, and of course, Silly Philly, gathered at the Reading Terminal for the first leg of the flight. On and on they travelled. No one Could stop them now! They were on their way! ln September, their last term at XVestern began. The last week of September was set aside for them. Beginning with Ll class show starring Silly Philly, the class proudly passed the week flourishing the senior buttons. After this week of glory, the class settled down to work. It wasnlt all ll grind, though. On November 22, the Sheraton Hotel Scrap Book Committee : ry 1 V-1 . ..,.,,,.,,.- .. X v g f '-e-...Q Grade Director-Stephen Herman opened its doors and welcomed seniors in. The occasion was the Prom. As everyone landed his helicopter, music beckoned them into the ball- room. Another glorious flight! This class was becoming expert at air travel. As the term flew by, everyone awakened to the somber fact that J.1nu.1ry 22 was the date of the final flight. And so with lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes, the members floated down the aisle. Even Silly Philly couldn't ,hide his emotions at this event-commencement. The be- ginning. It was the end of three wonderful years at Wfestern, but the beginning of a lifetime of flying on their own. 12-A Show he Senior Prom It's all in the gamef' Hey There! nf' -.. I was there all right, but I don't think I was noticed. You see, my tux was L1 little dated, so my date, Daffy Dilly, and I hid behind the piano, and just enjoyed watching the folks hav- ing the time of their lives. This class is a very special one. It has the distinction of being the tirst one from NVest Philly to have their prom at the beautiful new Sheraton Hotel. And was that hotel big! It took us half an hour and four escalator rides to find the right room. That was the Pennsylvania ballroom, reserved especially for those lucky seniors. At 9 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 1958, Une Soiree 51 La Sheraton commenced.
