Shickman, Talus. Gerson, Ginsberg Shahinian. VVeatherby. The Western News is the medium by which all students learn what is going on at all times, in all parts of the school. Under the expert guidance of Miss Georgina Melville, our Western News has become one of the finest high-school publications in the state, pro- viding the students with an interesting, instructive, and amusing newspaper. This year, somethin new has been added to the regular Western News activities. This activit has grown out of an experi- ment of last term. Last fall, Miss Nlelville and the staff sent the Western News to former Westernites in the armed forces. The response was overwhelming, and many letters of encouragement and thanks were received. To provide money for the continuance of this activity, the show Skoolzapoppin' was presented, and was a huge success. The receipts will suflice for mailing about nine issues. We are all proud of our Western News, and hope that it will keep up the good work, particularly that of boosting morale among our fighters in Uncle Sam's service. WHWE NEWMJU lUllUfS Ulilll

Zanknian, Shahinian To be successful every governmental body must have compe- tent executive, legislative and judicial departments. West Philadel- phia High's Senate acts as our legislative committee. Composed of one member from each group the Senate is able to have close Contact with the separate groups. The Chairman this term, chosen from the 12B class, is Stanley Laderman, the Secretary, chosen from the 12A's, Sidel Kirson, and a new office, introduced just this term, that of vice-chairman, is held by Ioel Rubin. It is the duty of the chairman to preside at the meet- ings and to act as a member ofthe Board of Directors. The Senate sponsors and aids many of our school drives, which this term included Tag Day, cleaner lunchrooms, and the Victory Corps campaigns. Since the Senate is able to maintain intimate contacts with the groups and the individual students, it. more than any other student body, has a direct effect upon the welfare of the entire school. This term's Senate has been an impartial and conscientious group and their success is well deserved. Wil HHH lllt SEHUM

CI-IAIRMEN OF PATROLS Top Row: Benhayon, Berenson, Tracton, Schonwald. Front Row: Whitted, Brenner, Zankman, Bernstein. Farewell, patrols, farewell. No more will the familiar calls of. One way, Bud, and What's your number? follow us as we steal slowly and discrettly away from the scene of our crimes. No more shall we receive a summons, calling us to appear before the Tribunal for some offense for which some patrol handed in one of his little pink slips with our name and number upon it. West Philadelphia High's Patrol system has grown with each term's work. It is now a highly developed organization with a large membership and very able leaders whose chairman is Thelma Zank- man. Under her guidance are chairmen of the lunchrooms and corri- dors who direct the Patrols. Frequent meetings between the patrol chairmen and the Tribunal have coordinated the Iudicial Branch of our government into a well-oiled machine. They have done a wonderful job in their stay at Western. They have enforced traffic regulations and performed their other duties in the best possible spirit. Clean-up drives, cleaner lunch- rooms and quieter corridors have been made possible through their effort and the cooperation of the student body. They have left a high goal for future patrol systems to strive to equal, and have made Western a better school to attend. tUfSlfllN'E MEHUUE.,
