WENTY-EIGHT years ago West Phila- delphia High School had as its embryo an annex of Southern High, in the Newton School. Because Newton was too small to hold its rapidly growing number of students, new quarters were taken at Thirty- eighth and Mount Vernon Streets Dr. Charles G Heyl, of Southern High, was the principal of the new school. lt was not until l9l2, however, that the present site was occupied by the present Western, which was then two schools-- West Philadelphia High School tor Girls, and West Philadelphia High School for Boys Dr, W, L. Sayre headed the Boys' School, and Mr, Parke Schoch, the Girls' School, The Girls' School ran along very smooth- ly, but the Boys' School assumed an en- tirely different attitude, The tirst contro- versy arose as a result of the choosing ot the school colors. The boys divided on this question some wanting red and black, and others wanting maroon and gray A vote was taken and it -was de- cided to select an entirely new set of colors, a decision which resulted in the choosing of orange and blue, As soon as Eighteen SCHOOL HISTCRY the colors were chosen, Mr. Mahoney and Mr, Campbell presented the school with their composition of a school song which still exists today--- The Orange and the Blue. ln l9l3 Dr. Sayre resigned and again Mr. Heyl became principal at Western, ln l926 when the school became co-educa- tional, Mr. Heyl reigned as principal ot the new Western, The year l93O brought the death of the much-loved principal, He was succeeded by Mr, Walter Roberts, former head of our Mathematics Depart- ment, whose able and careful guidance has kept Western progressing up to the present. Western has expanded from an enroll- ment of ZOO to an enrollment of 6000. Many of her graduates have won honor in business and professional fields. West- ern has a fine reputation in sports, having among its accomplishments thirteen swim- ming championships along with thirteen other sport championships, The Shakes- peare Club, which was originated in l9l8, has the highest Philadelphia school record of Shakespeares productions. Our West- ern News is the finished product of all Western's journalistic experiments of the past. The Senate, the School Constitu- tion, and the Tribunal were instituted and are administered by the students, with faculty supervision. The Silver mark was passed in V337 The Class of June l939 awaits the pass- ing of the Golden mark for Westeriw, when its many accomplishments will stand out anew, Then will we remember all the aocd received from West Philadelphia High and proudly boast of our Alma Mater Alere Flammam Nourish the flamel --lt must be fed with the same energy which has kept it alight during the quarter Century past.
