SSI STA TO PRINCIPAL To the Class of June l939. HIS is the age of specialization, which means that talents must be developed to a high degree of proficiency before they will be capable of fulfilling their pur- pose or stand the test of service. Half-trained workers, indifferent or undisciplined artisans, cannot be trusted with the important work to be done in the world today. Our democracy will be only as strong as the individual members comprising it. The keynote of democracy is service. Therefore, youth's problem today is to find' its native endowments and develop them to the point of making a worthy contribution to the world, Democracy does not mean enjoying a life of freedom and ease, but rather of life filled with the opportunity to grow, to use one's talents, and to give. Faithful apprenticeship is the avenue to such a goal. The road leads through relentless selffdiscipline, tireless industry, and self-sacrifice, Without these, no one masters himselfi no musician masters his instrumenty no engineer has seen his bridge com- pletedg no one has known the thrill of satisfaction in achievement, The challenge of service awaits youth's enthusiasm and energy To make our civilization secure we must give more than we get. STELLA C, CULLEN, Nine
