FOREWORD BEAUTY, Guidance, Culture, Endurance, Pas- sion, Wisdom, and Life: these are the qualities that, for us, are typified by the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Moreover, their huge propor- tions symbolize the greatness and magnitude of our class. Beauty is represented by the magnifi- cent Temple of Diana at Ephesus, Guidance, by the Alexandrian Pharos, whose beams pointed out the way to the mariners of old, Culture, by the colossal Statue of Apollo, patron of the Muses, Endurance, by the Great Pyramid, which has re- mained intact for countless ages, Passion, by the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus that was inspired by a Queen's grief, Wisdom, by the Statue of the Olympian Zeus, supreme ruler over the lives of the ancient Greeks, and Life, by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, that brought green fragrance to a lifeless desert. For these ideals may we always strive, that our life-work may be perpetuated as everlasting and useful monuments, and not become merely: Like snow upon the desert's dusty face, Lighting a little hour or two and gone.

W.xL.'i'ER Ronmrs, Principal TO THE MEMBERS OF 'THE CLASS OF WIUXE, IVE? The Seven Vnlonders of the Wcmrld were the tullillment of the visions of men who saw their dreams take form, in part at least. For generations eaeh of these wonders has symliolized size or strength or permanence or heauty or the emhodiment of their hlending. They represent accomplishment. As a contrast men have struggled with the Seven Follies of Science and met the defeat which, we might say, was foreordained. An apparent glimpse of suecess spurred them on in their elliorts to triumph. only to meet with frustration. Wlieii we think of the Seven Follies of Science we think ol failure, although out of what was failure to the individual much ot oui scienee has developed. Although men may struggle with equal ardour and holdness. some may seein to win and some may seem to lose. The vision may he a wonder or it may he a folly. hut out of either may finally come much that is worth while.
